Comments about Graph Tech TUSQ XL Fender Jazz Bass 4 String Nut:

This could not havr been easier. Old broken one out, trimmed the new one just a tad, slipped right into place. Perfect height, width and, string slots were perfect. I still cannot believe how easy this was. I says a lot for quality made parts. Didn't even have to remove the strings.

Comments about Graph Tech TUSQ XL Fender Jazz Bass 4 String Nut:

I like to be able to do my own set up work on my basses. So I bought a set of nut files from Stewart Macdonald. This nut must be sanded to fit the slot that holds the nut on your bass. You'll also have to work with the string notches, most likely, unless you get lucky, and you're happy with the string heighth at the nut. It isn't rocket science, but it takes a lot of filing, checking the string heighth over and over, to get it right. I'm getting good at this, but I have screwed up a couple nuts over the years, and had to start with a new one. That being said, this nut is really tough. It's got a built in lubricant which helps make tuning easier. Once installed properly it is a significant upgrade to the stock plastic nuts that come with many basses. It transfers sound well. That's a somewhat subtle difference, but it matters. If you aren't willing to get some sandpaper and files, just remember, it doesn't fit your bass right out of the package. Perhaps buy it and let a professional luthier install it.

      Well worth the money.

Comments about Graph Tech TUSQ XL Fender Jazz Bass 4 String Nut:

I ordered one of these for a project bass I was putting together. I was amazed at how easy it was to install -- with a pre-made nut, you expect to have to do some significant final shaping. But with this nut, all I had to do was sand to final thickness and get the width just right. Amazingly, the slots were perfect without any shimming or deepending.

You might not get lucky like this -- it's normal to have to either shim the nut from below to raise the slots if they are too low, or to have to deepen the slots if the action at the nut is too high. Either way, this nut will be in the ball park and easy to install. It's 95 percent of the tone of a bone nut with 5 percent of the work, and in most cases will need little work at all.

There's a reason that comapnies like Taylor use Tusq. Give it a try!
