Ordered a GT Gold Series GT-ECC83-S Preamp Tube to replace the original, 15+ year old 12AX7 in a recently acquired (used, eBay) Rocktron Voodoo Valve Witch Doctor pre-amp. Man, what a difference. Note articulation, sustain, smoothness and especially the "spongy-ness" of the low/mid-gain is just amazing. A little bright on the high-end, need to dial down the presence setting on a couple patches and on my ENGL head. But it's all good. Best upgrade I have made in a while. As for GT -- they source tubes from different suppliers globally, test and use those that have the best musical properties and durability (mine was made in Slovakia). SO, IMO, the premium you are paying for a GT is to eliminate the guess work and expense of finding a good sounding tube yourself, you know you are going to get one that has been tested and has a definite musical "voice".

I play on a Mesa Stiletto Duce II. Yeah, very high gain amp. The amp is 6 years old have never changed the pre amp tubes have always used GT's in my Marshalls so tried them in this amp. The tubes sounded great. The high gain went from super cool to insane the clean tone is awesome. The big problem is that I started losing tubes in my high gain slot after 3 months. I know how to test my amp and everything is factory spec. Maybe it is my amp, but the Mesa tubes lasted forever. I never had an issue with GT's in my old Marshall. These tubes cost more than just about any other out there. Maybe if not using a high gain amp, or maybe I got some weak tubes. However; I'll buy another brand for this amp next time.

Comments about Groove Tubes Gold Series GT-ECC83-S Preamp Tube:

These JJ/Groove Tubes ECC83-S type tubes have high gain with tone. I may like them slightly better than the Sovtek 12AX7LPS. Or at least about the same. I'll keep buying them as long as they keep making them. I don't like low output preamp tubes. I want a lot of drive, distortion and harmonics. And these have it.

Comments about Groove Tubes Gold Series GT-ECC83-S Preamp Tube:

Tried some JJ Gold 803S tubes. They were ok for a while, but not as good as these. These have always been my go-to tube and glad to have them again. Add to that, the circuitry in the preamps I use likely were designed for these tubes. Let them burn in through active use and the sound really opens up to a sweet, full character.

Comments about Groove Tubes Gold Series GT-ECC83-S Preamp Tube:

This tube sounds great in position one of my Fender Hotrod Deluxe, however, when used in position one and two in my Hotrod Deluxe, there were plenty of harmonics but the harmonics sounded a bit too bright and thin. I preferred the sound of my amp with this tube in position one and a Groove Tube 12AX7-C in position two.

                OMG!!!!

Comments about Groove Tubes Gold Series GT-ECC83-S Preamp Tube:

I bought 6 of these to go with the GT EL-34L-s Gold series power tubes to retube my 100 watt Marshall Plexi, and my Marshall 9001 3-ch all-tube preamp. Most people say the preamp is not worth having. I have to disagree. With this re-tube of the preamp...Man what a difference. I liked it before but now....It will tear your head off, it is just incredible. like having a whole different preamp. As for my Plexi that I run the preamp into these preamp tubes are phenominal. Same kind of difference for the head. I will stick with Groove Tubes and I will never buy another Ruby tube unless GT goes out of busiess. Groove Tube Rocks!!!

Comments about Groove Tubes Gold Series GT-ECC83-S Preamp Tube:

This is the tube that GT "traces curves" on sophisticated equipment and packages with their Special Application Group (SAG) kits. STRONG GAIN with this tube--pushing a STOUT signal through the front end of a cascading gain amp is what this tube does GREAT. Additionally, the cleans sound like someone took the "blanket" off the amp--mids are definitely THERE!!! My tech also installed a Matched Phase Inverter (MPI). These tubes made a B-I-G difference in my FENDER:-)

I've tried several other 12AX7/ECC83 type tubes and keep coming back to the Groove Tubes ECC83-S. In fact, I like it so much, I replaced ALL my preamp tubes with it! It has a good hot tone, but still clean enough for when you don't want to play loud. It woke up my dead-sounding 5150 amp.

I replaced the crappy stock Sovtek tubes that came with my Silkyn Super 50 with six of these. What a huge difference. Dan Torres recommended these, and as always,he was right on the money. My amp sounds like a combination of a Marshall, Orange, and a Vox. It's sick! I also put a Eminence Wizard speaker in it too. They're a perfect combination. I highly recommend these tubes!
