It's the low-power pentode popularized in the early Vox AC30 amps. It was rediscovered by Matchless and now is used by nearly every tube amp company. These are as good as you'll find in current manufactured tubes. You may find them expensive compared to other vendors' matched JJ pairs, but you are assured by GT that the quality control and matching are done right.

Tube amps just sound better imho. So it just makes sense not to scrimp on the main ingredient. When the tube manufacturers run a "batch" it's not uncommon to have up to a 70% failure/out of spec rate depending on different circumstances so thank goodness we have the likes of GT, Ruby, TAD, and others to separate the bad ones for us.
I wanted to replace my tubes with a higher rating to get the best clean headroom from a lower wattage amp. I already knew I preferred JJ's which sound the best[to me] of the current production el84's. I recieved a pair of "8"s and they did what I wanted.
GT thoroughly tests their tubes. You have the responsibility to get the bias adjusted properly or any output tube....even GT's will prematurely fail. Have a tech do it if you can't because there's enough residual juice in a tube amp[even with the power cord unplugged] to fry you. Once this is done it should be OK as long as you replace the next set with the same # you have in the amp without a re-bias[though it's always nice to do it every time regardless]. This is an advantage if you pop a tube at a gig as long as you carry extra tubes and fuses but don't have the time to bias.
You are paying a premium for GT to match the tubes,check for microphonics,transconductance,etc. It's worth it to me for the peace of mind and it makes your amp run better and longer. Output transformers can run up to 20% cooler and closely matched tubes just last longer when they "share" the burden equally.

As for features, Groove Tubes offers better selection of types that relate to your individual sound preferences.
Aye, there's the rub... I bought a quartet of Gold EL84's for my Carvin BelAir 212 at the end of May, 2011. It is now mid-September & the tubes have failed. So far I've used the amp on less than a dozen gigs, all within 100 miles of my home, so no long road vibes. Considering the hype Groove Tubes makes for their grading & quality, this is very poor bang for the buck!
I won't purchase Groove Tube products ever again.

These tubes are JJ's. JJ makes some pretty good tubes. This GT EL84 (made by JJ)has plates and getters that look EXACTLY like some of the late dutch made Phillips tubes. They dont sound as good as dutch made Phillips tubes though, they dont sound terrible. They are very sturdy tubes anyway.

well i bought the tubes and when i got them installed i was hearing a completely different amp. the tone and sustain was absolutely amazing these are high end tubes and i've never heard better

I've been using this tube in my Mesa Boogie Studio Caliber amp for the past 2-3 years under regular gigging use. It has stood up to many, many gigs and is rock solid. It is LOUD, clear, and very articulate. It is not just a recording amp tube, this thing screams.

Do not believe the "matched" hype -- you are better off to buy the cheaper, competing, tubes and test them yourself -- in your particular amp. Groove tubes' testing procedures must be nonexistent. I bought four these things and they sound worse than unmatched tubes costing 1/2 the price. Your best bet is to avoid GT tubes !
