I purchased the lever with the star head which did not fit the tuning pegs on the old Baldwin piano at my church. Sent it back to exchange for the square head lever and it works fine. I just needed something for minor tweeking in between tunings and it does the job. For the price I am happy.

It worked well to begin with, but the more I used it, the more the head wallowed out and required excessive turning to take out the play. Around C2 it got stuck on the tuning peg. I had a heck of a time getting it off without damaging the peg. Buy a better tuner. This one is not worth the trouble.

Comments about Grover-Trophy Pitchpipe Piano Tuning Hammers:

The head and handle were loose upon opening and simply wouldn't thread together. I used an amount of plumbing tape around the threads to make it somewhat usable but still very loose. It's not worth it. Buy a quality hammer.

Poor construction

By roger worden

Comments about Grover-Trophy Pitchpipe Piano Tuning Hammers:

I restore pianos as a hobby. I was looking forward to a spare tuning hammer that I could keep in the car. But this hammer I just could not use.
Hammer had too much play to properly move the pins. I returned it right away.

Great Hammer!!

Comments about Grover-Trophy Pitchpipe Piano Tuning Hammers:

Arrived in perfect condition and I literally tuned my piano in half an hour with it. Definitely worth the buy and I am sure it will last as long as my piano will.

Not a tapered socket

Cons

  • Loose Fit

Comments about Grover-Trophy Pitchpipe Piano Tuning Hammers:

This tuning hammer / lever "seems" well manufactured, but it has a fatal flaw (worse than the head unscrewing). The star shaped head is NOT tapered to fit the tapered piano pins and it fits loosely. The improper fit makes it difficult to precisely tune my #2 piano pins and it damages them in the process. Upon calling the manufacturer, he said to tap the hammer onto the pin gently. Doing this did not tighten the fit, it merely damaged the pin.

Cons

  • Handle Comes Off Easily

Best Uses

Comments about Grover-Trophy Pitchpipe Piano Tuning Hammers:

Handle comes off easily and will strip. I used JB Weld glue and never came off again. The 4 side wrench may whiden overtime. Should work for one tuning and it's cheap. Would recomend it if to be used for one tuning, for the price.

Comments about Grover-Trophy Pitchpipe Piano Tuning Hammers:

The good points, it works if you have time to fool with it, it does what it's supposed to do, and it's not real expensive, seems to be fairly well made. Bad points is, it's a little bit aggrivating because the head keeps spinning loose while you are trying to tune, and you have to keep removing the hammer & screwing it back on to tune. If you have lot's of time to fool with tunng a piano at home, it works, but if you want to do this as a professional, get a better made hammer.

The best you can expect from a tuning wrench is that it fits and works as expected. This does both.
