Comments about Hipshot BT7 Bass Xtender Key For Made-in-Mexico Fender:

It does exactly what is intended to do. easy installation and easy to use. You will have to fine tune the low D note with the Knob on the back of it, once that is done, make sure that your strings are stretched out so that when you alternate from E to D and so on, you will always come back in tune. one of the best additions to my pbass!

I've installed these on 3 of my basses. I use them in both jazz and rock/progressive rock situations. Their tech support is outstanding, too; I've sent in questions and they ALWAYS reply, pretty quickly (not immediate but if not the same day, the next business day - I consider that reasonable) and with a real answer - that is CORRECT! They feel solid and I expect them to be long lasting (I've had one installed for 5 years and I've never had any issues or poor performance). Rock on!

Comments about Hipshot BT7 Bass Xtender Key For Made-in-Mexico Fender:

This is well-made and fits without any struggle or modification. Yes, as some reviewers mentioned, the string post is a slightly different finish from the others and you can see that from the front. Big Deal! It WORKS, and that's always the bottom line to a musician. I'm having fun with it!

            Drop D Musical Fun

            By The Scarlett Bass

            from Ottawa, ON

Comments about Hipshot BT7 Bass Xtender Key For Made-in-Mexico Fender:

I was looking for a quick way to drop my E to a D midway through some of my band's original songs, and the BT7 lets me do that seamlessly. I installed it without much difficulty on my Fender P-bass Deluxe and two weeks later, I still enjoy using the BT7.Setup wise, I would recommend that anyone installing this visits Hipshot's official website to see the install video (far more helpful than the paper instructions). Setting up the tuning screw takes a little bit of time to master, but overall, it's pretty straightforward for almost any person capable of wielding a screwdriver to figure out.Aesthetically, the chrome BT7 looks great. The one catch is that it doesn't match the glossy and brilliant shine of Fender's chrome key tuners. It's not enough to warrant replacing all the key tuners to match, but the most critical eyes will notice a slight difference. So this is a bit of a moot point depending on who you talk to.The BT7 is a solid and well-built product that is easy to install, stays in tune and is a lot of fun to play with. If you want to drop your E string to D without whipping out a tuner on stage or doing it by ear, this is a musical toy to add to your lineup.

            Good, but a few issues

Comments about Hipshot BT7 Bass Xtender Key For Made-in-Mexico Fender:

I just ordered and installed one of these on my MIM Jazz Bass. It was simple to install and set up but I have a couple of issues with it. First, this tuner is made specifically for Mexican Jazz and P-Basses, right? Well you would think that if it was made specifically for those basses then it would be an EXACT match with the existing tuners. It is not. On mine, the chrome is not as white as the original tuners were. It has some minor goldish overtones to it that you wouldn't notice unless it was right beside three other tuners (which it is). The string posts are not tapered in the middle like the stock tuners are either, so now I have one oddball tuner that does not match (or look as good as) the stock units. Without the taper, the Hipshot looks kind of industrial and unfinished. I think that with a nominal amount of additional machining that they could have made a much more attractive tuner. The string post is also finished in kind of a matte finish instead of the high shine chrome like the stock ones.As far as functionality goes, the Hipshot is great. It came out of the box dead on when I moved the lever. There is a little bit of a funky process that you have to go through to tune the string that involves flipping the lever between the "E" and "D" positions but it isn't a big deal. If you do decide to buy the D-Tuner, you will probably end up replacing all your tuners with Hipshots if you want them to match. Right now my bass looks kind of weird but I guess I will just break down and buy the other 3 as well. My band plays mostly in standard tuning but we have a couple of drop D songs and it makes it much easier to switch. The tuner also seems to hold its tune as well as the originals (which also worked well).

I've been using the Hipshot Extender Key on my basses for almost 20 years now. This is one of the coolest upgrades you can make to a bass. It's easy to use, easy to install and accurately drops your E-string to a D in about half a second. While your guitar player is retuning his whole guitar, just flick your extender key and take a drink while you wait. Play around with it for a while and find ways to switch in the middle of songs.
