Fender Mustang I Speaker Upgrade: The little Fender Mustang I is a great little amp for practice and low volume rehearsals, however, the stock speaker cuts nearly an octave off your lows and highs are tinny, and mids are farty. Again, great little amp for what it is and how low-cost it is. By swapping the stock speaker for the Mod 8-20 it is not only affordable, easy to do, it makes a BIG difference in overall tone and note articulation. I only use this little amp for practice and low volume rehearsals and have been using it for close to 5 years specifically for that purpose and did not want to spend half or more of what the amp costs or is worth. When I first purchased the amp it was obvious the stock speaker was the weak link. The Mod 8-20 will make you happy, or should I say happier. Great little speaker at a great price. Note: make sure that when you do the swap that you connect the RED speaker wire to the PLUS connector and BLACK speaker wire to the MINUS connector tabs on the Mod 8-20 (they are marked on the Mod 8-20). You will also need to ground the Mod 8-20 by snipping the ground wired soldered to the stock speaker and attaching it to the Mod 8-20's metal outer rim (cage) by scratching or sanding a little of the paint off around one of the screw holes that secures the speaker to the soundboard and attaching under the screw. It's easy.

I modded an amp to an old tweed champ type circuit, and built a custom cab for it. After reading the great reviews on this speaker, i gave it a shot.

i was very dissapointed.

I prefer a lot of headroom, and this speaker broke up VERY early. The speaker had very weak volume, and when it did get to rocking the bass was not there, and the highs were very brittle and ice picky. I ran the amp through another cab and the sound was much more balanced.

I had the same brittle highs in a 12" Jensen that i had put into another tweed build. Fool me twice....

I won't recommend Jensens, nor will i use them again. I'll be replacing this speaker with the Eminence 820H as soon it is released to market.

Comments about Jensen MOD8-20 20W 8" Replacement Speaker:

I cant say enough positives about this speaker. It took a measly little 20W Crate practice amp with an SLM speaker (which left a lot to be desired) and simply made it sparkle. The value cant be said enough especially for anyone with a small practice amp and an easy upgrade. Its easier than installing RAM into a computer. 4 screws and two wires.

The marketing is spot on in that the tone is as 'clear as bell'. I didnt find the tone overly bright, but spot on with great range and responsiveness.
With my 3 electric guitars (PRS, Carvin SH575 and Strat) I found this speaker really shined with the Strat, even though they all sound great.
Playing those percussive punchy low and throaty R&B/Hendrix rhythms in the neck and neck middle setting were top class.

Where it does miss a little bit is with some distortion and the PRS and Seymour Duncan's. Those Duncan's really have a great trebly bite to them and I found that while the distortion was great and 'classic' sounding, this wasnt the speakers 'home' so to speak. So its not the buzzy Randy Rhoads bity tone, but the rather the rounder Cream/Clapton tone when distortion is on.
I found this speaker really likes to live in the high mids to the mid lows which is actually a great place to be more akin to 70s classic rock and blues over metal. Though I am sure if you are playing a closed back amp, that will change things.

Massive upgrade and I join the rest of the choir in its praise. If you happen to have a practice amp that could use some love, definitely upgrade with this MOD 8, you wont be disappointed.

Comments about Jensen MOD8-20 20W 8" Replacement Speaker:

I bought a Bugera V 5 5 watt tube amp. From most everything I read on the Internet the original speaker just sounded "too dark" And looking around for any 8 inch speaker with 4 ohms was not too easy. Not too many choices to choose from. The Jensen MOD 20 was available (locally) and the price was real good.I bought the MOD 8-20 for a replacement, I made a GOOD CHOICE it seems to be louder and brighter than the Bugera speaker. Before I had to run my tone knob maxed out on 10...still was too muddy. But the Jensen I can run my tone knob at 4 or 5 if I wanted to. How awesome is that . I replaced both tubes in the amp and did not really notice a difference , but now the speaker...that was different. Thank you Jensen for making such a good speaker replacement.

I put this speaker in my Line 6 spider IV 15 and this thing rocks!!! A definite must for any little 5 watt tube or small solid state combo. I did have to drill 2 new holes as they didn't match up exactly, but it was easy. This is a great replacement speaker for small amps. Line 6 should just include this with the Spider IV 15. I purchase this based on reviews and it dosen't disappoint!!

Comments about Jensen MOD8-20 20W 8" Replacement Speaker:

I just recently traded a huge 4-10 Deville for a 1977 Silverface Champ. I know, you think I am crazy, but 60 watts is TOO much for the average player. So, I wanted something light with Excellent tone, something that would take a few great pedals, and something to push myself to become a better musician.

Well, when I got the Champ I really enjoyed the small package and simplicity of just 3 knobs, but there was just a little bit of mojo missing at the point of breakup, around 6-7 on the volume. Flat and fizzy with no clarity is the best way to put it. I read about the Jensen mod speakers and did some research about that flat, fizzy sound and how the Jensen added CLARITY to clean it up. Just a few shekels later & 30 minutes of time putting it in made a WORLD of difference! If you are looking to tighten up your sound, clean up your lows and highs, and make your amp punchy, GET THIS SPEAKER! You will not be disappointed.

Bought this to replace a blown speaker in a Peavey MAX 158 practice amp. Speaker was blown when I got the amp, so I can't compare the two, but this speaker dropped right in, wired up and sounds fine through this 20W practice amp. No complaints.

                    I bought 2 Mod8's and put them in a 2x8 cabinet.
They have the clear, chiming Jensen sound, like the C8R, only rounder and less bright.
I played them through my Fender Excelsior w/a Telecaster and they sound great. Very punchy. Breakup is nice and bluesy.
I then plugged into my Vox 15VR w/a Les Paul and they sounded good there, too. Not muddy at all.
I have a 4x8 cabinet and 4 of these would blast.
I recommend these as a upgrade speaker and would pick them over the other eights on the market.
                    Plus the price is supurb.

What a great little speaker. I used it to replace the damaged alnico Jensen in a 1964 National Studio 10 amp made by Valco. Think Page type sound. Anyway, the speaker is near perfect. It added quite a bit of volume to this amp, compared to the stock speaker when it was in ok shape.

My only concern is that it is too good. It doesn't allow for the amp to break up until near max on the volume. But...that is easily remedied with a flick of the guitar's volume.
