This humidifier does what it is supposed to do. I own several humidifiers of different brands,I would say that they all do what they are supposed to do but, in a pinch this can be used as a soundhole plug also. The best soundhole plug by far is the Lute Hole. I have even made a few humidifiers that work very well, not real pretty but none the less they work. No matter what you use to humidify your instrument just do it, it's worth the effort to prevent damage. A hygometer is also a wothwhile investment I switch mine from instrument to instrument periodicly just to check the humidity levels in the case. In most cases the area that supports the neck creates an air dam between the neck and body and you really should use 2 humidifiers one in the headstock neck area and one in or very close to the soundhole area. Be very careful not to over humidify this can be as bad as not enough humidity. Just pay attention and check your instruments periodicly especially in dry weather times, use a hygrometer and, by far the best protection for your instrument is to keep it in the case when not in use.

I bought this Kyser soundhole humidifier thinking that it was going to work well and save my acoustic from the 30% humidity in my house. Well, I was wrong. I did manage to take off the plastic ring that is of no value, but after two days of the humidifier in the guitar, I noticed water buildup on the top of the soundhole where the sides of the humidifier rests on the body. I wrung out the humidifier and tried again. Less than 5 hours later, the water was back. I now keep that humidifier in its plastic covering with the instructions awaiting return and have since been using a more efficient room humidifier and bought an Oasis Blue humidifier instead (Highly Recommended as better alternative)...Now I don't worry over the relative humidity in my house anymore. Be advised and watch out for this problem with the Kyser soundhole humidifier. I think any others, like the Planet Waves would work better too.

Comments about Kyser Lifeguard 6 or 12 String Acoustic Guitar Humidifier:

It looks very good, first time user I found out that it's a hassle when insert into the guitar and when removal out of the guitar especially when the guitar strings on the way. I like the idea it could easier just need to modify a bit.
I think it's little too much for the price.

This is a great humidifier and it's nice that it keeps the humidity inside the guitar. Just make sure you don't make it too full and you'll be fine.

I use this with my 12-string Alvarez Jumbo and it has served me well for several years. I have a different style for 2 other guitars and I really can't tell a difference between the two styles. I do like that this one closes off the sound hole just keeping only the guitar body humidified.

It works fine for the job it is intended for. Just add a small amount of water and squeeze out any excess water the sponge just has to be damp. I also wipe it off with a paper towel then let it stand in the open air for about 30 minutes check and see if I can get any more water out. If water does not drip out then I install it and close the case. I check it every time I open the case and if it needs it add water a repeat the above before it goes back in the guitar.

I like the idea of this providing humidity to the guitar and not all over the case to. That said it did not work for my Taylor mini very well. It is to difficult to fit in the sound hole. The problem may not be with the product as they do list sound hole sizes. I assumed and well you know what happens when we assume. My bad. MF service was excellent as usual

i followed instructions and dried it well but i was queezy to put a wet humidifier in my guitar--so i solved the problem. simply get a 2 or 3 cc syringe and fill it with water then syringe in the water into the 6 sponge holes on the back of humidifier. works perfect --eliminate WORRY. il order another kyser for my other guitar.

                      Excellent humidifier if used correctly!

I use these in my guitars and have not experienced any problems. Make sure to squeeze out ALL the excess moisture so the sponge is DAMP...not wet, and be sure to dry it off outside completely especially between the flaps that hold it in the sound hole. It's my understanding that it DOESN'T work well with all finished (such as the ones with nitro finishes), but with gloss finishes on two different brand guitars, I've never experienced a problem.I also understand that the hard plastic ring is there only for shipping purposes (so says my luthier) so be sure to remove it before use so you don't scratch your guitar.Taylor's web site says to allow humidifiers to dry out before re-wetting or you can over-humidify the wood. Since this is a sound hole humidifier which humidifies the inside of the guitar, you might want to supplement with another type of humidifier near the headstock to humidify the fretboard.

                      Simple and Effective

I have one of these for my Martin, my Taylor and my hand made classical. It is very simple to use if you use it correctly.First, take the dumb plastic ring off and throw it away. When you fill it, make sure you squeeze out ALL of the excess water and use a towel to dry the outside and the space in between the two side wings that will touch the soundhole. Only insert one of the wings on a dread sized guitar. If you buy the small one for a classical, both sides fit easily.I live in Central PA and I refresh the sponge about once each week in the winter. On very cold and dry weeks, I will also put a Planet Waves small instrument humidifier by the headstock to keep the neck properly humidified. The advantage of the Kyser is that you can use tap water. The Planet Waves requires distilled water.I have never had condensation buildup nor damage to the top. It installs very easily. My luthier recommended it and now some of my friends have switched over to the Kyser as well.It would get a 5 star rating if they ditched the dumb plastic ring.

My acoustic guitars took a beating this past winter with low humidity; there was fret buzz galore! I placed one of these spongy-type packs in the soundhole and a week later, NO fret buzz. My guitars played perfect ever since. I'll be using these every winter, faithfully. Only drawback is the soaking sponge- you gotta really shake the water out before applying. Use an old towel for that!
