Lace hot gold

Comments about Lace Hot Gold Single Coil Pickup:

These pickups are some of the highest quality strat sounding pickups on the market. They have an extended frequency range that may take the user a while to get used to. I used these pickups as a replacement for some noisy, but great sounding stock pickups in my godin sd 22, a fat strat like guitar with a darker voice. at first, i only noticed how quiet they are, and how theywere louder, Soon after i noticed that they sounded, as reveiws before this call dry. I had not acclimated to the frequency range yet. This tooka while, but once my ears adjusted, i started to notice how great these pickups are. First, they retain there strat tonality throuhg basically any effects. Another thing i notices is that the pickups have an amazing midrange that sings with sustained note and sounds great through gain. The bottom end is firm, these pickups have a lot of bass, they sound big and heavy, this can be a benefical characteristic, but if you play funk, the bass is too much and cutting the bass on your amp wont help much. Otherwise, the bottom end is nice. There isnt too much treble on these pickups for being "hot", but that is a good thing for bright strats that sound harsh. I reccomend that you use a boost pedal after you guitar if you wont the pickups to "open up" and sound "juicy". i use a pigtronix polysaturator with everything maxed out, except the gain, which is off, and the pickups blossom and sound like a strat on steroids. The install is easy, and takes maybe half an hour. great pickups.

Good pickup, not for everyone

Comments about Lace Hot Gold Single Coil Pickup:

By now it's pretty common knowledge that these are "love 'em or hate 'em" pickups.I've been curious about them for years, so I tried one in the bridge of my Mexi. Standard Strat w/ Callaham block. Here's the deal: these are great pickups, but they will challenge your ears. They have a wider frequency response than typical Alnico rod Strat pickups. And they don't compress in the same way. They are certainly not firm like a humbucker, but they compress a little less than traditional single coils. However, the extended low end tends to hit vintage amps ( I use a Bassman and AC30) a little hard, sounds kind of like an input channel overloading on a mixer (yuck), so I had to reduce the bass on both amps. Not a problem for the clean sound, but then my overdrive pedals all sounded thin. I can see where some have said these pickups sound "too compressed and fuzzy" because the amp is caving in - but that's the amp, not the pickups.I found all these same comments online when I was doing my research, and frankly these descriptions didn't really help me very much in trying to decide. So, here's what I can contribute: they sound very much like traditional single coils, but "dry". There's no "juiciness". The "dry" part could be good if you like to run through a lot of effects, as the tone holds up through the signal chain and there's not as many unpredictable mismatches. I can see these working well for studio guys or sidemen who have to call up a lot of tones with minimal gear. But when I say "dry", I mean "really, really dry". Be careful what you wish for! If you like "juicy", where you squeeze every drop of tone out of the guitar and amp working together, you won't like these. Check out the YouTube clips of Clapton and Buddy Guy playing their older model signature Strats with the Laces - it's a pretty fair representation. You can hear that fuzzy, lower mid distortion I was describing, plus that strong piezo-like extended top end. I wasn't sure if it was the pickups or the active mid boost/TBX in the Clapton guitar, but I have no active circuit in mine, so I can say for certain now - it's mostly the pickups. It's no wonder Pete Townshend loves these. With so much of his hearing shot, these probably sound a little more natural to him since they have that extended range.Listen to the clips. If you are blown away by the tone, you'll find these pickups sound pretty much exactly like older Clapton and Buddy Strats. If you don't love the tone so much that you just have to have these pickups yesterday, then don't get them, you'll be disappointed. They are what they are - they won't do "vintage" at all, despite what Lace may claim (nothing against them, they're probably a good company, but I don't think their product descriptions are very accurate).
