To me, the Speed King is the perfect pedal. Being direct drive, it's VERY fast. I also own a Flying Dragon direct drive, a terrific pedal, but it's my backup pedal now. The Speed King has a better overall feel and it's just as fast as the FD.I gave it a ten for Features because it HAS no features -- all you can adjust is the spring tension, and I suggest you don't even touch that. The pedal comes perfectly adjusted and ready to play right out of the box. That's one great thing about a pedal that's been around for 60 years -- Ludwig has this pedal down to a science.I give it a 10 for quality because the pedal is simple and strong. There's not much to break.10 for value because the SK is faster and smoother than most $240+ pedals out there. If you're familiar with the Gretsch Floating Action pedal, this pedal has a similar feel but is much faster.Chain drive is a gimmick -- you lose both the 'feel' of a strap and the quickness of direct drive, and end up in some slowed-down middle ground. Every chain drive pedal I've played or owned has been slower than the SK. You can't go wrong with a Speed King. You can't even mess it up, because there's nothing to mess with. Buy one.

I have owned this pedal for 3 months and I find that it is decent but your money would be better directed towards another pedal. To start off it IS a very fast pedal but that is hampered by the fact that it is flimsily built by today's standards and has no features, and only has one way to adjust it.There are no screws or velcro to fasten it to the ground it is on, which is a real downer because it moves the bass drum quite a bit each time you kick. On the upside though, it barely takes any pressure at all to push downward, although it is very inconsisent due to the fact that it "jumps" upwards on the lash back and requires you to apply differing amounts of pressure when playing quickly. It is also fair to mention that you do not get as much power out of this as you would other direct drive pedals such as the Yamaha Flying Dragon or Axis Longboard. These pedals are also infamous for developing squeaks and unless you lubricate it regularly it will squeak, and begin to be harder and harder to press. In conclusion I feel that this is a decent pedal but if you're willing to spend a bit more, I suggest you do. The pedal design is from the 60s and I think it's about time Ludwig upgrades this design.

Comments about Ludwig Speed King Single Pedal:

I've had mine since April 1971,and have used it for at least 30 of those years past. Ten years on the road. Only complaint, the heel plate rattles, but, that's what duct tape is for. RIGHT? I've never experienced a breakdown. Great product.

A pedal that requires talent

Comments about Ludwig Speed King Single Pedal:

If you are looking for a pedal that provides dynamics and articulation that can me mindfully controlled by skill, this is the one to have. If you like to stomp your pedals, don't expect to be impressed. The action of this pedal is limited only by your capabilities. I can play sustained triplets with it at 140 BPM. Great pedals when miked with the appropriately tuned bass drum(s). For those of you who look for the Bonham sound, don't forget that Bonham also had a 26" bass drum tuned in such a manner that most drummers don't use. It's a five star to me. You don't need adjustments to compensate for, or mask, a lack of skill and/or practice - you just need to practice.

Still the King of bass pedals.

Comments about Ludwig Speed King Single Pedal:

Others have been trying to duplicate what this pedal delivers for decades. Introduced in 1937, this pedal has not changed functionally since 1948, and for good reason: there's been no need to, it's been perfect since then, and you don't change something when you've perfected it. Other competitors' pedals either don't deliver what this pedal delivers, or they are so expensive you have to almost take out a second mortgage to get them. The Ludwig Speed King brings no-limitations bass drum playing to drummers on a tight budget who do not have ungodly amounts of cash lying around.I used to use chain drive pedals, but not anymore after giving this pedal a try. I couldn't believe actually how limiting my previous chain-drive pedals were because of their weight and springs. This pedal uses light-weight, balance, and foot position to get the job done. The only limitations it has are those in YOUR foot and leg!

Comments about Ludwig Speed King Single Pedal:

I've used this pedal on and off for the past 17 years and there's not one bad thing to really say about it. Some guy said you can't "stomp" on it but, who the hell does that anyway? and who thinks it's going to give you the same sound as bonham? The size of the drum, # of shells, type of wood or acrylic used, and heads will do that. We all know that. Any way, if you want a solid pedal that will last a long time, if you take care of your gear, with a great feel, buy this. If you don't take care of your gear, just buy used stuff.

great pedal

Comments about Ludwig Speed King Single Pedal:

Well, i just recently ordered one of these off of this website and I'll have to admit that it is the best kick pedal I have ever played with. Keep in mind that i'm not a big fan of chain-drive or a dozen adjustments. I also happen to use 26" kick and this pedal was proven a successful partner with that style of kick. It is smooth, quick and was ready to go right out of the box. I keep it oiled to avoid ever hearing a "squeak". But it certainly worked for me.

Comments about Ludwig Speed King Single Pedal:

Had experience with a 10+ year old Speed King back in the early '70s.Bought a new one later and found it far too stiff.(Tried all the spring variables)Got rid of it ASAP.The used one was far more responsive. (Worn Springs ???)Still using a 20 year old chain drive Camco today.Had leather and fibre strap Gretsch + Camco pedals in past.Buy a medium priced Yamaha copy and I'm sure it will be a worthwhile investment.Just don't let your Bass Player with Gene Simmons / Cowboy Boots sit in for 5 minutes of Louie,Louie. If he doesn't break your pedal, for sure he'll put the wood beater through the head!

Great speeds, poor quality.

Comments about Ludwig Speed King Single Pedal:

I was messing around with this pedal after a show, and I was amazed at how fast this thing was! I could easily do doubles on this pedal that I could otherwise only do on double belt pedals. It was an old pedal, or at least looked thrashed and dinged up enough to be an old pedal. The only problem wih it was, I picked it up and it just sorta fell apart. The design of the pedal is obviously built for speed, not quality.

THE Speed King

By XAN

Comments about Ludwig Speed King Single Pedal:

This pedal was givin to us when we first started playing drums. I'ved used that so much since then the holes aren't round but oval. The death of the beast happend one night at a party when on of the holes at the heel end got too big. Closer examination of the ground in our practice area shows metal dust. DO OIL THIS PEDAL! I give it a ten for quality because I got this pedal old as hell with a nail holding the thing together and it died years later with the same response and quality. I need a new one

A Great, Classic Pedal

Comments about Ludwig Speed King Single Pedal:

Don't let the detractors sway you--the Speed King is a classic, workhorse, solid pedal for any drummer. This is one of the few pedals I've tried where you can actually get different dynamics, and the feel is very nice. Will it stand up to repeated, violent stomping? Probably not, but are you making music or stomping grapes? Super-heavy-footed drummers should stay away--this isn't the pedal for you anyway. For the rest of us--drummers who make music--the Speed King is wonderful. There's a reason it has lasted all these years: it's a great pedal that, with a little simple maintenance, will last forever and does its job well. It's fast, lightweight, has good feel, and packs away easily. If you don't abuse your gear, like quality equipment, and want a pedal that might outlast you, get a Speed King.
