Dont let the lack of reviews and feedback fool you...people dont know what theyre missing without this pedal! Anything from Mapex is at LEAST decent...but this pedal is GREAT for all styles and speeds of music...and its all for under a hundred big ones.I recently purchased this pedal because I was on the budget and my other choices were Sound Percussion's deal for the same price that came with a drop clutch...or just the pedal which was only around 70 dollars. I was skeptical about the SP pedal because of its price and how it was considered a "beginner's double kick pedal" so I changed my mind and got this one because all the reviews were great. However, on the entire internet I only found about 4 or 5 reviews. To fix this problem, Im submitting my input. This is a GREAT pedal for a GREAT price. I didnt want this pedal for the speed, I just wanted something for an occasional bass drum roll and rock fills. However, Ive reached death metal speeds with this baby and can play songs by bands such as All That Remains, DragonForce, Metallica, Slayer, etc. with no problem whatsoever. It's probably a little harder to achieve this speed with this pedal than it is others and the fact that Im new to double bass doesnt help, but surely if I can do it you can too. The downside to this is that it comes with no instructions on how to set it up, but if youve set up a double bass pedal before (of if you have any common sense on drum mechanics whatsoever) then this should come naturally to you. I have never set up a pedal in my life until this one and I did it in about 15-20 minutes if not sooner. An experienced drummer could do this in about 5 or 10. The main plus for this pedal is it's looks. Its a beautiful piece of metal meant for playing the heaviest of metal. Like I said, Im more of a mid-range/classic rock guy, but if youre into speed metal and heavier stuff, this pedal CAN do it. Anyone who tells you that it's impossible is just spoiled with top-of-the-line brands like Tama's Iron Cobras. But if youre on a budget and crave double bass action, then no matter what style of music youre looking for, this pedal can do it all for just one single hundred dollar bill...rather than youre entire life savings. Get this pedal!

I must be the only one with a bad experience.... Fist pedal I got the second pedal was stripped pretty much out of the box. Exchanged it got second pedal checked everything, played it twice and the second pedal stripped again!! I'm not a seasoned drummer I'm a guitar player, just bought drums for my studio. I don't use a double kick very much. I figured two times was enough I exchanged it the third time for a different pedal, see what happens this time.

Does the Job

By Zach Hazen

from Chicago

Comments about Mapex 500 Double Bass Drum Pedal:

If you're on a budget, new to double bass pedals or just new to drumming altogether, it's a good choice in pedals. It's constructed well and doesn't feel as cheap as other pedals in its price range. I wouldn't recommend it to a veteran player looking for the bells and whistles, but like I've said again and again, it does the job.
Has all the features you would expect from a double bass pedal. Nothing fancy.
The quality of it isn't bad, the felt beaters are kind of nicer, they don't tear up the head as bad. I definitely recommend getting a drum patch regardless of what pedal you use, but for this one especially. My only qualm would be that a lot of the lugs that hold it together like to get loose after a while, especially on the beaters. I get a lot of slippage from the left pedal, but playing on concrete is most likely why it's as much of an issue as it is.
All in all, I got a good price for this pedal, it's nicer than other low budget pedals I've had which were around the same price. I wasn't looking for anything special in this pedal, after not having played for two years I figured it'd be a good way to not break the bank. I will look into replacing it in the not too distant future though.

im cheap and a handy man

Comments about Mapex 500 Double Bass Drum Pedal:

I bought this as my first double pedal and im content with it only thing this pedal was lacking was leverage on the pedals but i took the screws out of the chains and put the screws back in a link shorter and it did the trick, put the pedals on a perfect angle and increased the speed of these pedals the beaters could be better but for the price i would buy this pedal without beaters so its whatever on that but if your looking for a great pedal stay away from the (sp) pedals they are junk and buy these and after i choked up the chains they play just like pearl eliminators if not better

Comments about Mapex 500 Double Bass Drum Pedal:

If you are a begginer at double bass, this is the best pedal you can get that is decent and cheap. For the price you can't really ask for anything professional from these pedals, but i assure you that you will not have any problems with these pedals for a few years. Have been playing these pedals for almost a year and NEVER had a problem, Mapex has yet outdone themselves in creating the most economically friendly pedals out there.
The features are not great, considering that these pedals are entry level, however it has a stabilizer rod base that helps balance the pedal if the bass drum is slanted etc. Has all standard features , spring tension, single chain drive, interchangeble beaters.
I was amazed by the quality of this pedal, it was made of metal it was made out of was sturdy and solid , although the paint does comes off after a while and the chain rusts when exposed to high level of humidity, which is an occuring environmental factor in where i live.
For its price, these are FANTASTIC pedals, its not a pedal you will not regret, its a very good starting pedal, and you will not lose out on cash if you were to upgrade to a better pedal.

Comments about Mapex 500 Double Bass Drum Pedal:

This is my first double pumper. I am very impressed as the pedal works fast and fluid. Time will tell if it works as great as my DW 9000 but so far it is great.
I was very impressed with the action.
Excellant price especially if you wait for the 15% off sale and free shipping.

Only if you can't afford more

    By Tim Patrick

    from NY

Comments about Mapex 500 Double Bass Drum Pedal:

I've had this pedal for a little over a year and finaly replaced it with a decent pedal

    Pros: it's cheap and light
Cons: The action is horrible (doesn't hit hard), the beaters suck and sound bad, the pedals themselves are too short and thin and arent at a comfortable angle, the springs are junk, the pedal doesn't come set up (you have to adjust everything not just set up and go). It gets no speed and the speed it gets has no power behind it so you cant hear it.

Overall don't waste your time or money on this pedal you'll love it for a week then get frustrated at why you suck at double bass. it is not you it is the cheap pedal.
Doesn't really have any features other than the bare minimum for a double bass pedal.
It is made of cheap thin metal, has cheap springs and is just a bad setup.
You aren't getting too bad of a deal for how much you pay for it.

Comments about Mapex 500 Double Bass Drum Pedal:

This is the second Mapex 500 double bass pedal I have purchased. The first was installed on a Mapex MyDentity 5-piece kit and this one was installed on a late-1990s Tama RockStar 5-piece kit. I have played pretty much all major pedals from the present back to pre-war Speed Kings. The Mapex 500 is outstanding and on-par-with to better-than the best of the best, which was a total surprise to me, given the price point. My experience with Mapex is that from the top to the bottom of their product lines, they deliver more than what one would expect. Getting the full benefit of the 500's adjustability on atttack speed, sensitivity and feel takes some trial and error, but when dialed in, this pedal is phenomenal for toe, heel or whole-foot play, and light, medium or heavy footed styles. I have tried the 500 pedal on a variety of kits including my early 60s Slingerland jazz kit and with several types of coated and uncoated kick heads. It can be adjusted to work on anything I've used and (with properly tuned heads) the stock beaters sound fine, miked or unplugged. The pedals have been durable. IMO, if you want an outstanding double kick pedal at a fraction of what other top brands cost, this one is definitely worth at least a look. If I could give it 6 stars, I would.

        Service and delivery comments:

Musician's Friend makes the buying process from ordering through delivery as pleasant, efficient and professional as possible. I have never had a problem with how an order is processed, nor with delivery, which is prompt, courteous and (so far) damage-free. I couldn't be more pleased with service and delivery.

Comments about Mapex 500 Double Bass Drum Pedal:

Beater can't be adjusted. You adjust height of pedal along with beater position. Foot board ends up too low to heel and toe for me. Pedal bottoms out fast. I wouldn't recommend it even to a beginner. Garbage
Do yourself a favor and spend a little more on a real double bass pedal. After all 60-70 more for a pedal is what you would waste on Chili's on a Friday night. Remember that when returning items to Musicians Friends they will charge you the 5.99 you saved on free shipping plus the actual cost to return it. Choose wisely.
