OVERVIEW

Bring out your guitar's true voice.

Gauges: .011 .015 .023 .032 .042 .052

Martin’s proprietary Nickel/Copper alloy blend wrap wire provides for a reduced pick attack and allows the guitar’s tonewoods to be heard, not overshadowed. It offers a uniquely mellow, yet crisp, sound. Martin’s wrap is a solid Nickel/Copper blend, not nickel-plated, meaning there is no chance for defects to allow for corrosion. Martin's proprietary wrap is naturally strong and corrosion-resistant, so much so that it has been used in the propeller of dreadnought battleships and various machinery and tooling applications.

As a person who performs 3 hour shows with their acoustic, I can vouch for the Martin Retro Strings. These strings hold their tone throughout the night, have never broken during any of my performances and have a better cost ratio than what I've been using. These are used on a Martin D-18 plugged in. The high, mid and low frequencies are all there and stay there all night. I also have come to prefer the feeling of the nickel as compared to the brass. The gauges of the custom light strings are a little more forgiving to the left hand too.

Have been playing since the early 60's, acoustic, electric and resonator. These strings are overly bright with unusual harmonics. If you are looking to make your guitar sound sorta like a bad resonator, I guess you would like these. They do not have the balance or tone of phosphor bronze. I guess they will be OK on my cigar box guitar. Strings are all in the user's taste. I don't care for the sound, You might.

Comments about Martin MM11 Retro Series Custom Light Acoustic Guitar Strings:

These strings are probably the most debated sets on the market today, seems you either like them or you don't. In the early 1970's we use to put light gauge electric strings on our acoustics for ease of play and to capture the sounds of the acoustic rock of the times. The Martin Retro Custom Lights in many ways seems to recapture those times to me. Admittedly, after being acclimated to PB and some of the other newer alloy strings over the last twenty years or so, I didn't particularly like these when I first decided to try a set on my beater, an early 80's MIJ Fender Malibu. I was about to give up on them when I realized they were beginning to grow on me, so after about a week or two I tried a set on my Martin HD-35. Again I wasn't impressed initially, but after a little bit they settled in and I really liked what the guitar was giving back to me. My Martin is an absolute cannon with SP's anyway, but seems even more so now, the bass is really big and the highs ring clear. Really nice. A few weeks later I replaced the FX's on my Gibson J-45 with these, and once again, after they settled in, I liked what I was hearing. If you were to try these strings, I would suggest you give them some time to settle in and you just might find you actually like them. Certainly, not everyone will like them, but some of you will. So, are the Retro's really that much better than the SP's and FX's? No, not really. They are simply different, and in my opinion a very good alternative. Only you can decide. Have fun..........

Definitely takes you back to the fifties. Somewhat of a nice cross between the softer sounds of pure nickel wrap and the thump of bronze.

Brings out the guitar's natural sound.

Comments about Martin MM11 Retro Series Custom Light Acoustic Guitar Strings:

I have been playing and recommending Martin SP Phosphor Bronze for about 15 years and loved them. They were my go to strings for my Limited edition 1935 Remake D28 Heringbone Martin. They have been replaced. The Retros have an unbelievable pure sound, last longer (I wipe down before and after each use) and a different look. I play regularly at church and home, I've had them on for over a month and they are still going strong!!! Fantastic strings that won't break the bank Martin has done it again!!!

I purchased these strings on sale to give them a try. I put them on a cheap Yamaha that I use for practice. They produce a lively bright tone and was a big improvement over what I had on there. It actually made the guitar sound like a much more expensive model. I own several Martin guitars which I use the SP strings. I like those but these are great on this Yamaha.
