Comments about Matrix MPU2 Clip-On Tuner Microphone:

I purchased this to use with a French horn and an elderly Korg tuner and was disappointed. I hoped it would improve sensitivity over using the tuner's built-in microphone, which often requires playing loudly especially in the low register, and I hoped that, by isolating the tuner from random sounds such as the furnace blower, it would eliminate detection of spurious notes. It did neither. Sensitivity is about the same as with the built-in microphone. The spurious notes, which may be electronic noise in the tuner rather than outside noise, are still picked up when I am not playing or when the tuner fails to detect that I am. There is a tendency, when the unit is clipped to the bell per instructions, for the tuner to detect an overtone of the note I am playing rather than the note itself.

I tried attaching the pickup to the leadpipe, since an oboist/music teacher friend said she gets better results with brass instruments by attaching her tuner pickup there. However, her pickup is shaped to go around the curve of an oboe bell, or to fit on a tube, whereas this pickup is flat. Attaching it to the leadpipe did not help.

The device appears reasonably sturdy and may well be satisfactory in other applications.
