Comments about Monster Cable Digilink 5 Pin MIDI Cable:
Don't be put off by some reviews that claim that the Monster Midi cable is only 3-pin. _ALL_ 5-pin MIDI cables are supposed to be 3-conductor cables. Pins 1 and 3 are no-contact pins in the MIDI standard.
Comments about Monster Cable Digilink 5 Pin MIDI Cable:
While this cable does have 5 pins, only 3 of them are connected, as stated in other reviews. With some MIDI devices this is sufficient, however I found out the hard way that my preamp/effects unit (Rocktron Chameleon Blackface)requires all 5 and this cable fails to fully function with the use of this cable. In fact only half of the functionality of my unit works using this cable. I even tested it on another unit with the same results. So why try to pass it off as a 5 pin? No the other 2 are not for phantom power either, on 7 pin cables 2 are for phantom power. 5 pin cables are already stripped of phantom power leaving just the necessary connections for MIDI signal transfer. This is one of the reasons I give it low marks since it is one of the most expensive cables they sell here I really do not see the justification to "cut corners" and still try to bill yourself as the highest quality cable available. So I give it an average rating. If you have low end MIDI gear this cable may support all the functions you need, but if you have higher end gear you will probably want to make sure you get a cable that has all the pins connected. To me that is a major priority because if it doesn't do the job in the first place then I wasted my money. Oh and yes it does fall out pretty easy too as someone else said. So really about the only good thing I can say about it is it looks nice.
Comments about Monster Cable Digilink 5 Pin MIDI Cable:
In the quest to learn from fellow musicians, I read these reviews. Sometimes, for a product or subject I know, I will write one.One reviewer wonders: [Why] "only 3-pins active??Answer: Because only three pins are needed to transmit midi-data. The extra two wires (and pins) are for supplying phantom power.Problem: anytime you place power cables parallel to signal cables, you create EMI. ( Electro-Magnetic Interference) Manufacturers know this, and they know that connecting those extra wires cost them money and grief. The costs are greater when they add more wire or solder more connections. Manufacturing-costs are greater still when they must include shielding to prevent EMI. Profits are lower when dissatisfied customers return cables that cause ?jitter? because of EMI.Solution: make cables that don't deliver power but are adequate for transmitting only midi data. Make them cheaply, and we have ZERO problems with EMI because of phantom-power!Although some of their products are fine, and some are even fairly priced, Monster does not make the ?best? cables for ANYTHING. They DO have the BEST marketing hype in the business, which is why people have unrealistic expectations for the Monster brand. Monster also has engineers that really know their stuff. That?s why they decide to make midi-cables that do not have phantom power wiring inside, thereby eliminating any possible source of internal EMI and profit-reducing problems.Another reviewer was dissatisfied by the loose-fit of these cables. In fairness, I must speak on the manufacturer?s behalf. Almost all Monster cables are made in China where they use metric measurements. Some musical instruments are NOT made in China. Even though most musical instruments ARE made on the Asian rim, measurement tolerances are not consistent between countries, or even between manufacturers within a country. THAT is why there are slight differences in the ?fit? of certain connectors. It?s not really a ?manufacturing defect? and in most cases, will not cause major problems. Finally, one reviewer says; ?Don?t waste money on cheap cables.?For audio cables, I agree. He goes on to state, ?...it?s best to pay now because of the ?better sound? good cables provide.? Well, I love his philosophy and totally concur, but must point out that MIDI cables have absolutely NO EFFECT on the quality of audio, because they ARE NOT IN THE AUDIO PATH.Cheap midi cables might cause jitter, might de-synchronize high-speed musical instruments, cause errors or retard patch-changes between effects. However, NO MIDI CABLE can possibly degrade or improve audio quality.Specifically, these Monster midi-cables are A-OK, despite the little problems and misunderstanding people have with them. And in this case, the Monster price is justifiable, so long as you do not need long-cables or phantom power. It is in a spirit of friendly helpfulness I offer this information, to guide others in their quest for affordable music gear. Thanks to other reviewers for their honest opinions. Thanks also to MF for providing this forum. That is just one more reason I do business with Musician?s Friend !
Comments about Monster Cable Digilink 5 Pin MIDI Cable:
I have only monster cables in my entire guitar rig. I recently jumped to controlling all my amps and processors with midi. This is monster! why would they only make a 3 pin active midi cable??This will work with a standard keyboard, but nothing more advanced. I expect the best and Monster usually give the best to me. Not this time.
Comments about Monster Cable Digilink 5 Pin MIDI Cable:
I bought it to have 1 dependable back-up to my many old inexpensive "brand H" cables which hold tightly. Figured it was worth the expense. I was wrong. Features-gave 3 for the color coded rings (had to find 1 positive.Quality gave it a 1. Sorry,it falls out when I play the keyboard if there is any shake at all. With certain equipment it holds if I really jam it in there.Value-gave it a 1. High price plus low quality equals low value.Overall-gave it a 1. Enough said.Quality-gave 1
Comments about Monster Cable Digilink 5 Pin MIDI Cable:
these cables are great for what they do, although they are pricy compared to most other midi cables. but theres really no point in spending less on cables, which are something you use all the time, and so its best to just pay more now and experiance the benefits of better sound they provide.
