I have to agree with the guy who said its a waste of time and also misleading to compare these to the Phillips made Mullards of the 50's and 60's; NOTHING ever made is as good as those tubes were. That said, this Mullard from New Sensor is a pretty good tube. Somewhat mild in the gain department,(but not too mild) very clear overall presence. I do hear just a bit of the sound of an original phillips Amperex in these when they are over driven - good detail with a bit of the crunchiness and bite of those awesome 12ax7's. To clear up the "rebranding" confusion, these ARE NOT "rebranded" tubes. These tubes are NOT sold under any other brand name. They are made by New Sensor (an American Company) in Russia. New Sensor Owns the Mullard, Tung - Sol, Electroharmonix, Svetlana and Sovtek brands, just as Royal Phillips once owned Amperex, Mullard, Valvo and several other brand names. In my opinion and based on my trial and error experience, This is one of the better sounding 12AX7 tubes currently being made. I think it's probably best suited to Hi-Fi systems but i like them and use in them in My guitar amps. To me, they sound best in Fender and VOX amps, where a very clear clean tone with a bright high end is wanted. They sound good in Amps driving EL84 power tubes.

I purchased these tubes to use in my Matchless Phoenix amp, which takes three 12ax7's in the pre-amp and phase inverter. The owner of Matchless, Phil Jamison advised me not to use these tubes because they were not of acceptable sound quality and prone to failure. I was curious though how they compared to NOS Mullards, so I got them anyway.

Sure enough, after installing them, they sound lifeless and boring. Very flat, tonally. Even in a bright amp, they just simply sound bad. There is nothing pleasing about the tone of these tubes.

Much to my surprise, the amp builders at Matchless were correct and the tubes both FAILED within three days of using them. I slowly started noticing a loss in volume each time I played. Now, they are both completely dead. Just a dull, faint muddy/thin tone can be heard when cranking the volume up.

Terribly disappointing. I had high hopes for these tubes being possibly decent. I can only give one word of advice now... AVOID.

Comments about Mullard 12AX7 Preamp Tube:

I bought a Mullard 12AX7 to replace a China 12AX7B for the V1 in my Vox AC15C1. The volume pot in the Top Boost produced an intermittent crackling noise, and by process of elimination I suspected the V1 tube. An YT video on replacement tubes for this Vox amp showed that Mullard was the next best brand for V1. After installation however, I heard unacceptable noise and microphonics even though the tube had improved tonal clarity. Musician's Friend provided a replacement and it was the answer. I like the Mullard 12AX7 because the tone from my Vox amp was much better than from the original China 12AX7B in terms of gain and frequency response.

Comments about Mullard 12AX7 Preamp Tube:

Marshall TSL60 from MF in 2003. Tried reissue Mullard pre and power tubes. I strongly suggest you try anything else. They just don't work in this head. My shop thankfully took them back and went with the original Marshall spec Winged C SED EL34's. Worth every penny. Ended up putting my original Marshall brand white logo ecc83's back in and it has never sounded so good. I had no idea it was so sensitive to changing tubes. I'm told the GT12ax7c is an excellent choice and I will buy from MF... the shipping is free! Really a buzz to hear this through a 1960av...naturally from MF. They might work great for your amp but not for me.

Comments about Mullard 12AX7 Preamp Tube:

This is my personal favorite preamp tube with the Tungsol being a close second. I've used the Mullard 12ax7 in many amplifiers. The Mullard 12AX7 improved tone, gain and general sound quality in every use.

I use this tube in the following amps:

Fender 100 watt Super Sonic Twin Combo (significant improvement over stock Groove Tubes), Peavey Classic 50 Head, Peavey Valve King 20 MH (improvement over stock Ruby's), Ampeg J12-T Jet II (way better than stock Sovteks), Egnator Renegade 65 watt head (better than Sovtek 12ax7wa), Orange Micro Terror.

I replaced all (5) of my original Egnater 30W amp head pre-amp tubes with these Mullard's. The original tubes gave me a "muddy" sound. These tubes give me better sound definition. More clearly defined bark and growl and brighter. Hard to describe but night and day difference. Before I changed these out there were very few settings on my distortion channel that I liked. Now I can clearly hear the differences when I change tone, gain, power, etc. This is a great upgrade! Worth every penny. I'm plugging in with a Gibson Les Paul Studio and ESP LTD with EMG pickups.

I bought these tubes to cleanup my stock Bugera V22 guitar amps sound and did they ever! If you're looking to get those bell like tones when you pluck those strings these will really help! The clarity is just spectacular, IMO.

Ive been running Old, original Phillips type 12AX7's in my DSL50 for years. i have a nice stash and ive always looked down on the new 12AX7 tubes as junk. Out of curiosity i bought 3 of these Mullards and Im VERY happy with the sound im getting. In my experience the problem with new manufactured preamp tubes is that, even if they have a decent tone, they are limited in range and detail. NOT SO WITH THESE MULARD RI. im getting a very full range with the pronounced, biting midrange i love in the originals. the note definition is almost as good as the dutch amperex. Im going to buy some more of these, plus some Tungsols and some JJ ECC803's and give the new tubes a closer listen.

curently running a vintage tb raxx(peavey)with 2 12ax7. it had sovtech wa's in it, decent sounding at best. tryed these and the tone noticeably inproved. very clean, musical sound. then i turn up the gain and the overdrive was impresive. i dont use distorsion much but the clean is very sweet. i would rate these as a mediem gain for you guitar guys, was considering tung sol but for bass i didnt think i needed high gain, glad i went with these!
