Great for home or studio. I have even ordered a second unit just because I like this one so much. That way, when my cheap bandmates show up to practice we will have plenty of stands for everyone to see the music.
I wasn't sure if I wanted the Conductor's Stand or the less expensive Heavy-Duty folding stand. In the end it was the additional features of this unit that won me over. I've had several of the fully collapsable/portable stands that fold up to fit in small cases and knew that I did not want something that flimsy. One reason is that they just don't hold large music books very well. I wanted something that would hold steadily a book with 200+ pages. Some of my books, such the White Pages type, have 400+ pages, so the foldable models just won't work.

There were three other features that I needed as well. First, a stand should be adjustable so that you can use it while sitting or standing. This means that it should be strong enough that when extended for a standing position it will not wobble or move. Second, the table should be large enough for full size books/sheets to lean against and the shelf (where the book sits) deep enough to hold large volumes. The tiny/cheap stands don't usually have enough room here, so a large book will not sit well. The shelf on this stand is 2" deep, so there's plenty of room for an open book of 200-400 pages. Third, it should be sturdy enough to withstand being moved around the room, adjusted regularly, and allow you to change books/sheets without worrying about it folding or collapsing under the stress. My experience with those tiny folding stands is that they wobble, they fall over easily, and they just don't do well when trying to adjust/move a 200+ page book.
For me, quality is rated in context of price, and this one has plenty of quality. I'm sure the stands used by the LA Philharmonic are probably better, but they are also not paying less than $25 for a stand. So in all, the quality is very good. That's also where the comparison between the "Heavy-Duty" and "Conductor" models became so important. From what I can tell, both have good quality, but in the end the Conductor just seemed to offer a bit more heft and durability. The sheetmetal work is very good. The rounded edges on the desk add strength and keep the edge from becoming a knife in the studio. The shelf is bent into place with a nice clean line so that it is square across the bottom. I'm sure the factor uses a huge press to do this, but even then when working with this type of metal there can be a tendency to warp or show signs of the bend pressure. That doesn't seem to be true here, and the unitl is very well made. Best part is the paint used is thick, so there is no raw metal feel. The paint doesn't feel like it will chip away or wear off quickly, so I'm very happy with that. I also like that there are holes already in place on the desk so that you can add accessories such as a light.
This unit is easily 1/2 the price of similar quality/build stands that I find in local stores. If you're using a stand regularly, and want something to hold books and plenty of sheets, then this is a good quality unit. The heavy duty might be good, too, and it's cheaper, but with the extra features the Conductor unit has I think it is well worth the extra money.

I am a classroom music teacher. I ordered 40 of these stands one year ago, but after having several break, I am now down to only 28 working stands.

The joint connecting the bookplate to the rod extending above the tripod is made of brittle plastic and is possibly made too small. Several of them cracked upon assembly, and then (with often just a small bit of pressure) one third of my stands have broken, leaving me with a completely useless item that could be repaired easily, given the right parts (which I cannot seem to find).

I am anxious to repair these because once I do, I will be in love with them again.

I mostly use it for practicing our new songs for our band. I don't worry about papers falling off. It is just the right width to hold music sheets and loose leaf folders.

This stand is exactly what I was hoping it would be. I play some outside venues and would always have difficulties with my music stand's stability. This stand is heavy and stable.

Comments about Musician's Gear Deluxe Conductor Music Stand:

If you keep your expectations in line with what you are paying for, you will not be disappointed. This is a no frills, basic music stand that is relatively sturdy. The shelf is nice and wide, and it adjusts to any angle.

Bought two of these on the STOTD for visiting musicians to hold their cheat sheets. They are very satisfied with them. I wouldn't expect this to be my "main" music stand, not sure it would hold up to the rigors of everyday use with heavy books. It doesn't have the nice little tabs at the bottom to hold a book open. The tensioning clamps are plastic and the frame is metal, so I could see them breaking due to over tensioning by an unaware user.

However, if you treat it accordingly, you will have a solid stand for a reasonable price.

Hoped to use for a ukelele strum group, but may still use my compact little flimsy stand, as this one is not as compact and portable as I had hoped. Good solid stand and will use at home, however.

Comments about Musician's Gear Deluxe Conductor Music Stand:

It is heavier than I thought it would be. Compared to lugging around a manhassett black stand.. It seems almost as heavy but it separates into two sections. This one does fold; but the " pole and legs" do not get really short, and the " desk " part is still the same size as a regular music stand. I am not so sure it will be my first choice for a portable stand because of the weight and bulk. It has not had a chance to be tested " in the field" yet, I need to create some sort of simple way to carry the two pieces! Having a diffcult time to recommedn or not- nsg for portability, good for sturdyness and do not know longevity/ durability at all.

I have had other portable foldable stands, but copy and sheet music would either fall through the openings or the stand would be too flimsy to be reliable and too easy to knock over. These stands are much better quality and at a good price.
