Great for home or studio. I have even ordered a second unit just because I like this one so much. That way, when my cheap bandmates show up to practice we will have plenty of stands for everyone to see the music.
I wasn't sure if I wanted the Conductor's Stand or the less expensive Heavy-Duty folding stand. In the end it was the additional features of this unit that won me over. I've had several of the fully collapsable/portable stands that fold up to fit in small cases and knew that I did not want something that flimsy. One reason is that they just don't hold large music books very well. I wanted something that would hold steadily a book with 200+ pages. Some of my books, such the White Pages type, have 400+ pages, so the foldable models just won't work.
There were three other features that I needed as well. First, a stand should be adjustable so that you can use it while sitting or standing. This means that it should be strong enough that when extended for a standing position it will not wobble or move. Second, the table should be large enough for full size books/sheets to lean against and the shelf (where the book sits) deep enough to hold large volumes. The tiny/cheap stands don't usually have enough room here, so a large book will not sit well. The shelf on this stand is 2" deep, so there's plenty of room for an open book of 200-400 pages. Third, it should be sturdy enough to withstand being moved around the room, adjusted regularly, and allow you to change books/sheets without worrying about it folding or collapsing under the stress. My experience with those tiny folding stands is that they wobble, they fall over easily, and they just don't do well when trying to adjust/move a 200+ page book.
For me, quality is rated in context of price, and this one has plenty of quality. I'm sure the stands used by the LA Philharmonic are probably better, but they are also not paying less than $25 for a stand. So in all, the quality is very good. That's also where the comparison between the "Heavy-Duty" and "Conductor" models became so important. From what I can tell, both have good quality, but in the end the Conductor just seemed to offer a bit more heft and durability. The sheetmetal work is very good. The rounded edges on the desk add strength and keep the edge from becoming a knife in the studio. The shelf is bent into place with a nice clean line so that it is square across the bottom. I'm sure the factor uses a huge press to do this, but even then when working with this type of metal there can be a tendency to warp or show signs of the bend pressure. That doesn't seem to be true here, and the unitl is very well made. Best part is the paint used is thick, so there is no raw metal feel. The paint doesn't feel like it will chip away or wear off quickly, so I'm very happy with that. I also like that there are holes already in place on the desk so that you can add accessories such as a light.
This unit is easily 1/2 the price of similar quality/build stands that I find in local stores. If you're using a stand regularly, and want something to hold books and plenty of sheets, then this is a good quality unit. The heavy duty might be good, too, and it's cheaper, but with the extra features the Conductor unit has I think it is well worth the extra money.

I am a classroom music teacher. I ordered 40 of these stands one year ago, but after having several break, I am now down to only 28 working stands.
The joint connecting the bookplate to the rod extending above the tripod is made of brittle plastic and is possibly made too small. Several of them cracked upon assembly, and then (with often just a small bit of pressure) one third of my stands have broken, leaving me with a completely useless item that could be repaired easily, given the right parts (which I cannot seem to find).
I am anxious to repair these because once I do, I will be in love with them again.

Comments about Musician's Gear Deluxe Conductor Music Stand:
The stand definitely does the job. It's solid and sturdy and easy to dismantle. The only drawback is that the bar will slide through main upright and hit the floor after removing the music holding platform. Now I know, so I can avoid that. Outside of that this music stand is excellent.

Comments about Musician's Gear Deluxe Conductor Music Stand:
The plastic collar that secures the center post was broken on the first one I bought. I inquired about replacing only the collar and was sent a complete new stand, and told that I may do what I wish with the broken one. The stand is very easy to set up and take down, and meets my expectations completely.
