i have used D'Addarios exl170's for a long time on my 5strings and thought I'd give these a try... Packaged well, labeled clearly, nice!
Slapped em on and had to pull back the hi end a bit! Much brighter tone and snappier than the 170s straight away. I have read many reviews on these strings leaving BLACK STAINS on the hands.... after arming both my ESP 5's with these and seating them in for about 10 min each, NO STAINING! Checked my tuning and it had dropped a half step. Which is acceptable....
Went to practice and warmed em up, had to pull back the highs a bit more, (bright as the sun!) checked tuning and they were all over the place! This had me a bit unsettled, because we dont slow down once we get slammin. So i dialed em in again, and we got to rockin it. After two songs, I ended up tuning as we played because they had dropped over a half step! The EXLs you can set and almost forget, these, NOT NEARLY!
So far thats my only complaint, time will tell if these strings can cut the mustard or if they are just "too cheap".........

These aren't terrible, but I noticed two things right away: 1) They feel rather "dull" to the touch (sorry, I'm not great at describing these things) espeically when picking with fingers and 2) if you have a bass with a neck length on the long side, some of these strings aren't as long as they should be. I strung up my Yamaha BB425X with these, and I didn't have enough string to get two full winds around the tuning peg on the 2nd and 3rd string (I used the entire string - didn't cut off the end), which means my sustain may be somewhat lacking when playing on those strings. There's really no excuse for that. For that reason, I don't plan on buying these again.

Good dirty strings.

Comments about Musician's Gear Electric 5-String Nickel Plated Steel Bass Strings:

These are good strings but they turn your fingertips black. Buy these strings and wash your hands. It's a no-brainer. Best strings for the price. I've had DR and other more expensive strings turn my fingertips black. Buy two or three sets at a time. The price is right and free shipping.

A decent quality string. They get the job done. Not as bright as other higher priced rounds, they are more average in my eyes. The price is where they excel.

Comments about Musician's Gear Electric 5-String Nickel Plated Steel Bass Strings:

the 105 gauge "E" string was a "dud" right out of the box - Musician's Friend would exchange them one for one because of how long ago they were purchased. I play every now and then so I only need to change them every 6 months to a year, but if you're like me, I buy in quantity, so I purchase more than a few sets of strings at a time...well, it finally came around to this set of strings and when I got o the 105 gauge E-string, it was flat in tone, like it was a used string. Definitely would NOT recommend these to a friend.

Comments about Musician's Gear Electric 5-String Nickel Plated Steel Bass Strings:

i tried this set and the low B was considerably less bright then the previous D'Addario that that been on for 4 months. less bright to the point all it did was thump. the other strings had a fair amount of high end sheen to them but as i use my low b alot, this was a real let down. if you are a frequent low b user i would suggest using these as a a practice set then switching to a different set for a gig or a recording session, or barring that using them as a last minute i have no other option its either this or a length of hay bale wire type back up string thing.

Comments about Musician's Gear Electric 5-String Nickel Plated Steel Bass Strings:

As all other reviewers have mentioned, they make your hands dirty. Coming from a set of DR hi beams, which I had used for over 2 years, I thought "what do I have to lose" and tried these out. But somehow the tone seems hollow, the sound is weaker, and this "light" gauge is still 130 low B instead of the 120 I was used to. The strings seem sluggish. It could all be my imagination, but I'm ordering the DRs again and will take these off. If I didn't have the money I'd probably even put the old DRs back on again.

        Inexpensive, sound decent but dirty

        By KrustyPantz

        from Minneapolis, MN

Comments about Musician's Gear Electric 5-String Nickel Plated Steel Bass Strings:

I'll get right to the point. I bought the strings because they were very inexpensive. The strings sound and play just fine and I have no issue with that. I do have one issue that everyone should be aware of. These strings are literally very dirty. By that I mean, once you play them for five minutes you see that the tips of your fingers dark gray (almost black) from the string plating rubbing off as you play. I would certainly not market these strings as "Manufactured from the finest nickel-plated steel" because the plating on these strings simply do not cut it.

When I unpacked the strings there was a grimy film on them. I guess to protect the strings. So I cleaned them with some glass cleaner and wiped them down until all the grime was gone. Installed them on my Geddy Lee JB almost two years ago and they're still good. IMO Bang for your Buck Strings. YOU JUST HAVE TO CLEAN THEM FIRST :-) Great Slap tone. I was very surprised.

Comments about Musician's Gear Electric 5-String Nickel Plated Steel Bass Strings:

30+ clams for name brand strings? Not any more fam. These strings do everything they do for 1/3rd the cost. They sound gorgeous, for a long time. Longer than most expensive brands I have used in the past.At first I was skeptical. But after using them over the last year I have no doubts that I was wasting my money buying expensive name-brands instead of these. Now I exclusively use them. I play a 5-string J-bass but my instrument is a P-bass set up with low-B to D strings (original Progressive Doom Metal band) which means I end up with unused G strings (lawdy! lol). I'm not paying premium prices for that either. Do yourselves a favor. Try a set of these.

Comments about Musician's Gear Electric 5-String Nickel Plated Steel Bass Strings:

I purchased these strings to help out a student who had no funds to replace his existing strings. Although I use a wide variety of strings on my basses ranging from DR, FODERA, D'Addario, RotoSound, Ernie Ball, Dunlop etc... These string were easy to tune and had a Mid/bright tone and held the sustain well. If you have a practice bass then these strings can be used to help preserve your inventory of performance strings. These strings will also work as an emergency backup replacement set to replace a broken string if that occurs. I have not tested these strings over a period of time so the life cycle is unknown to me..

I bought these strings for an inexpensive (and experimental) way to lower a Schecter 4 string bass to B,E,A,D tuning. I have 5 string basses, but don't like the thick necks.
I had to dress the nut slightly to accommodate the thick B string. I am very happy with the result.

You are changing the Ship-To country.

Our product catalog varies by country due to manufacturer restrictions. If you change the Ship-To country, some or all of the items in your cart may not ship to the new destination.
