Picked this up on sale, and it's excellent for the price. Obviously has some limitations (not real heavy, lacks some adjustments), but if you need some type of boom versus just a pole stand, and are not abusive with your equipment, this stand should work well with a not too heavy mic. I have a DR Pro and there is a significant difference in build quality, feel, and features, but the DR was five or six times more expensive. The DR will last longer, but the MS-220 is certainly worth the small amount of money.
As they tell you, there are limitations. The boom slides, but is not otherwise adjustable. For example, the boom does not extend. The counterweight is more cosmetic. Don't use a mic that weighs a ton.
Not built for really heavy duty use, but not bad. Haven't had this for a long time, so we'll see how long it holds up.
What else can you get for around this price?

I bought one of these a few years ago, on a whim, and was very impressed. It was better than the Proline stands I had also bought (and I believe it was cheaper than this current impostor.) UNFORTUNATELY, now it seems, they have changed their manufacture. It's now EXACTLY like the horrible PROlines, that I hate, and want to replace. Now I begin the search to find a stand like the one I got a few years ago under this same brand name. It is a great stand, and I want more of them.

Great stand for the money

Pros

  • Good reach
  • Solid Arm Clamp
  • Wide Enough Base

Cons

  • Light Counter Weight

Best Uses

  • Non-stage Mic Holder

Comments about Musician's Gear Tripod Mic Stand with Fixed Boom:

Great mic stand for the money. Counter weight is very light, so not good for big heavy mics with pop-filters or on-stage work. Works well with a MXL 990 and small foam pop-filter. Good for amateur recording work.

If you use this stand- keep pliers handy

Comments about Musician's Gear Tripod Mic Stand with Fixed Boom:

I got this mic stand as part of a Shure mic SM058/mic stand package. I went for it because I have two vocal mics and needed another stand. The Shure mic is excellent of course. The mic stand, however, is a different story. I've owned it for maybe 6-7 months and I carry a pair of pliers with me to every gig just to secure the set knob on boom. It won't stay tight and the mic slippage is constant otherwise. The pretty little knob is now chewed to pieces by the pliers. Just a few weeks ago, I noted that the set screw on the non-adjustable boom arm started slipping as well. I just ordered two K&M adjustable booms thru Musicians' Friend and I'm trashing this thing as soon as the new stands arrive.

If you are looking for a mic stand that will remain set in place and won't be adjusted a dozen times a month, this might be the ticket and a decent bang for the buck. If you are a regular gigging musician and you need something that will holdup month after month of hard use, this stand may very well end up being more of a hassle than it's worth. Keep a pair of pliers in your accessory bag!

Comments about Musician's Gear Tripod Mic Stand with Fixed Boom:

This is a cheaply made stand that can barely support an MXL 990 microphone. It really is only useful for very light microphones. Getting the adjustments to stay in place requires tightening almost to the point of breaking. Really a lot cheaper than I had expected.

Comments about Musician's Gear Tripod Mic Stand with Fixed Boom:

I got these as part of a 2 for one. They are very unstable and flimsy. Barely worth it at 10 a piece. One was missing the boom screw, and for the other one the boom lock just didn't hold it in place, so I had to take it apart and add washers. Still not great.

MF's customer service was awesome and shipped me a replacement. Still not a good stand, so shame on MF for selling them, but kudos to MF for excellent customer service.

It is always good to test these products before settling with one. Mic stands are a little tricky because the height of the user or other preferences may affect how he/she rates the stand. Buy it and make your own judgement.

Stand needs more weight at the bottom, to prevent tipping, and a sturdier screw on the bottom to hold the legs.

Good quality for the price. These were originally part of a mic package deal and I did not receive them. Talked to Royce at MF and explained that they weren't packaged with the mics. Not only did he get them shipped out ASAP, I was credited for the amount of the stands. AWESOME Customer Service!!!

I have one of these and one of the Pro-Lines sitting on either side of my computer table. They are the identical product, save one difference (even from the picture on this website). Instead of the metal bar twist at the axis point between the stand and the arm, it has a plastic twist. It's not a huge deal and for 20 less, I'm perfectly satisfied.

Is it the be all and end all of stands? No, of course not. Is it serviceable and stable? Yes. Is it cheap? Yes. If you're gearing up (aka, buying a new stand every other week to go with new mics, like I seem to be doing) and need something that will hold a mic without much cost or fuss, this is the ticket.
