OVERVIEW

The iLok2 from Pace is smaller, stronger, customizable, and has a much higher capacity than the original making this portable software license solution better than ever before. iLok 2 is small enough that you can fit two of them side by side in adjacent USB ports, and the sturdier USB connector and solid body makes each one tough enough for constant usage. Best of all, thanks to the latest in technology, the smaller iLok can now hold over 500 software license authorization while allowing you to add a custom label under the protective sleeve so you know which iLok is which.

iLok2 is also compatible with the original. You can download any licenses that are available for download in your iLok.com account to your new iLok. The new iLok is backward-compatible and except for the License Card slot, does everything the original iLok does. You can also move your licenses from an original iLok to a new iLok in your account with the iLok.com Move Licenses utility, subject to software publisher restrictions.

The iLok2 is also fashionable with a sleek black design and cool blue LED to let you know when it's in use.

Holds over 500 software licenses in a smaller, sleeker, more robust design.

FEATURES
  • Smaller design allows 2 iLok 2's to fit side by side in adjacent USB ports
  • Holds over 500 software license authorization
  • Sturdier construction
  • Sleek black design

License managers in general tend to cause headache where there should be none. The iLok is no exception. After purchasing some expensive software such as Pro Tools, you are required to buy their hardware DRM to use the software you've already paid for.

A fun fact to keep in mind is that a Pro Tools "free trial" requires you to buy this dongle. If you are someone who is looking to test out different tools for their workflow, this is going to cost you.

My brother has purchased a few dongles in the past and doesn't seem bothered by them except of course when he misplaces them or when one breaks. As such, I have seen a few such as Steinberg's E-licenser, the 1st-Gen iLok and Reason's Ignition Key.
Propellerhead seems to be the only company that respects your purchase by giving you something that's *not made of plastic* and doesn't break easily. I wish I could say the same for Pace and their iLok, which feels flimsy and does not seem like it would last long outside the studio.

I give the benefit of two stars because it does what it says on the tin. It could have done better if Pace cared enough to give it more durability. The license software works.

Overall, I stay away from anything having to do with license managers. Case in point, during this specific order when we ordered the new iLok amongst other things (mics, stands), our iLok either fell out or got left behind. This is out of character for Musician's Friend because I've never had issues with poor packaging before. Laughably, this was time-sensitive and we needed the iLok to use Pro Tools. Since we didn't have the dongle, we had to record with other means.
Thankfully, I always have my own copy of Reaper ready to deploy at a moment's notice. In two minutes, Reaper installed, launched, set up hardware and was ready to record. I guarantee you cannot get things done that quickly with anything using a key.

If you must purchase this product, just keep in mind that you're the one buying this piece of plastic and your ability to work seamlessly is tethered to this dongle.

Comments about Pace iLok 2 License Manager:

Really, is there no other way to thwart the very real unfairness of piracy? (And, ultimately, does iLOK even work in regard to that?) (I will hope so.)
My most recent negative experience with iLOK is that I guess they upgraded something from iLOK One so as to create--ta da--iLOK Two, and because of that, a plugin that I should have been able to upgrade for 49.00 (KushAudio Clariphonic) will cost 98.00 to upgrade, because the upgrade won't work with iLOK One.
I've had enough headaches with iLOK One. In this case, I've learned from my mistakes.
My advice, then? If the software you are wanting to purchase depends on iLOK, buy other software.

Unit did not function, non-returnable item. I bought Pro Tools 11 (full box set) and was not told it came with iLok, so ordered one overnighted. Decided to try the one from MF and it blinks but never powers up. :(

The customer service support around this product and its affiliates is a waste of time. 10 plus days and still waiting for the rest of my licenses. I feel punished because I lost my key.

Comments about Pace iLok 2 License Manager:

I finally had to trash the plugins I purchased from MF (Antares plugins) because, w/o any way to predict the why or the when, somedays iLOK would function properly and other days it would not. I am out the price of this product plus the cost of the plugins and, also, the price of all the time wasted, doing production work I had to do a second time after having to trash the plugins.
Do your best to stay away from this this product, even if it means using only plugins that don't use iLOK licensing.
Truly, I'm doing my best to warn you.

It took me 2 days and 2 different computers with 2 different op systems to make this work, only to find out that sometimes losses connection and the plug in asks for it over and over. Very frustrating to set up. This is actually the reason why I am not upgrading my pro tools, so I don't have to put up with this key.
