As a novice conga player I was more interested in the video than the practice conga. The video was very informative and I would liked it to have gone a step further. The practice conga sounds nothing like the real thing but I can see that it would be useful for someone that lived in an apartment. The video make the package worth while.
This is a great practice tool, that you can take anywhere. I stick it in my suitcase when I'm traveling. It does not replace a real conga at all, but does allow you to practice, and has a woody sound more like a small cajon or other solid wood drums. The strap goes around your legs, not your waist, and should fit most anyone. I love it - it provides a nice tonal variety to my other hand drums.
Upon receiving my Pearl Practice Conga package, I was delighted to see that the drum was painted a deep metallic red - quite impressive, and a good match for my Export Anniversary Edition kit. Upon playing the drum, I wasn't as impressed. The drum itself (I use the term loosely), while suitable for practice, is not suited for live or studio applications. I suppose I expected it to sound more like a conga, with a rich, warm sound and a good and hearty POP. It sounds more akin to an old cardboard hat box. The strap was also an issue for me, as I am not a small guy. It is said to fit around the waist for support of the conga. I found the strap to be quite a few inches short. The video portion of the package, however, was very informative and helpful; almost worth the price of the entire package. If you can get past the fact that the practice conga has no tone, the package is a useful tool to learn and practice conga playing techniques.
This product is a horrible product, i gave my child this and it fell apart the second day we had it.
As a touring musician, on the road for 10 months out of the year I always need a practice and warm up tool. The Pearl practice drum was handed to me by another musician playing with the opening band. Love at first site....I warmed up great and had a great gig.....Ray Turull "deSol"
