Works great! No problem on both the large, thin tuning knobs, and the smaller, thicker ones. Much better than their guitar winder worked on my basses. The only grumble I can think of is that it gets squeaky when in the middle of winding each string. No problem- even sort of an enjoyable funny sounding squeak, if you are at home. But if you are in the middle of a gig situation, where quietness is important, it could be a problem. Maybe some sort of a lube, like silicone would work to silence it.

overall it's very convenient. especially when you break a string on stage and need to change it fast. the handles are solid, the cutter works, and the winder fits the pegs on my jazz bass perfectly.
Bass Pro String Winder/Cutter. String winder is larger to fit the large tuning pegs of a bass guitar. The built in string cutter is great for trimming the excess string lead.
well built. i was worried about the plastic handle for the string cutter, but i got it and it's actually pretty solid

OK, it's not surgical steel, hand-forged by monks who've spent centuries perfecting the art of crafting string winder/cutters, but who cares? It gets the job done for a good price. It cuts my .105 bass E-strings like butter and the winder slips easily over my elephant ear tuning pegs.As long as I don't jump up and down on it with hobnail boots and leave it out in the rain for weeks at a time, this cutter/winder should last me for years.

This simple little tool takes the tedium out of installing new strings on your bass. I recently purchased one of these (I've had the guitar string winder for years), just in time to re-string 3 of our basses on the the same day. What can I say? It does what it was designed to do, and speeds up the process of winding your new strings (and taking off the old ones). I was able re-string and setup all three instruments quickly. And, because I used this handy little tool, I was able to spend more time on setting action and intonation, and less time doing the mechanical act of winding on a string. The only reason I gave it a 4.5 on quality is that if you are really rough on your tools, you might be able to break this one. Having said that, my guitar winder has lasted nearly 6 years with no problems, and I expect the same from this bass winder.

As a new bassist, the Planet Waves Bass Pro String Winder/Cutter was the first tool I grabbed! It cuts your old strings off, stretches and winds your new strings, and trims off the excess. It's the perfect addition to the bass player's gigbag!

I love this thing!! compared to using pliers, and my hand, this cuts my string-change time in half! The cutter is strong, and simple, and cuts trhough my 0.130's with ease. No edges, means nothing to dull, just shears through the windings in one easy action! I keep one in each of my cases, and one with my tools.

Decent idea, just cheaply made. I bought this for my 5 string bass and found that the handle unscrews itself when taking strings off. Plastic is cheap and not made for the long haul. String cutter does work though again its not made for longevity. On the plus side it does do away with having to carry an extra tool around. Save your money and look for a custom made winder made from quality materials.
