Built tough and loaded with innovative features for flexible, reliable onstage tuning.

The Planet Waves Chromatic Pedal Tuner is a sweep and strobe tuner with patent-pending intuitive rotary user interface housed in a rugged, roadworthy metal enclosure. An oversized note name indicator and super-bright tuning LEDs combine to make on-stage tuning easy in all lighting conditions. Professional features like true hard bypass for preserved tone and dual 9v AC jacks make the instrument tuner at home in any pedalboard configuration.

In Strobe mode, the played note appears in green on the oversized rotary display while red LEDs chase clockwise if you're sharp and counterclockwise if you're flat. They slow down and finally stop as you nail the pitch. In Sweep mode, the LEDs sweep left or right indicating whether you're flat or sharp.

A big, multi-segment note indicator in the center of the display is very legible when standing. The pedal activates the mute/bypass circuit while 3 controls above it select the tuning mode and user-selectable A435—A445 calibration.

The pedal instrument tuner runs on an included 9V battery and has 9V I/O for daisy-chaining other pedals. With its large display and true bypass that doesn't mess with your tone, it's ideal for electric guitar players who have to perform in dark conditions and who use pedalboards.

I have used a lot of tuners. Each has had their good and bad issues. I was originally attracted to this tuner because I think it looks great, it looks chrome plated. Finally I recently bought it. Features? Well it is a tuner and it tunes things, but if more info is needed it is easy to read what note it displays, and will automatically recognize what note is being played, hands off as should be the case, so no matter what tuning you use, it will work just as well. Personally the sweeping setting is not for me, but this makes zero difference because it has the more common sharp or flat lights and when correct the green light comes on. I hate to tune guitars and despise out of tune guitars, so the fact that this is so easy and fast to tune things is great. It is heavy for its size which helps not just to make it very heavy duty, but it wont be sliding around the floor on you. I have no hum issues with mine, those who have perhaps could arrange their effects differently or return it as defective, mine works perfectly. I was really happy about how it functioned, and a bit surprised because it worked so well, then I turned it over and read who actually makes this tuner under the brand planet waves, then why it worked so well all made sense. Turn one over and see for yourself who makes it, that may let you know why it is good quality too. It seems odd to me to get excited about a piece of gear like a tuner, but while I purchased it as a necessity, the appearance and performance were so good that yeah it is like a cool new piece of gear, and that is just what it is. The pics here dont show off how cool this looks, but in person it looks like it is a nice looking heavy chrome plated device, very sweet.

I've had this tuner for a while now and it's not too bad. It's heavy and built very solidly, the two power jacks allow for easy power daisy chaining, the muted tuning is nice, true bypass ensures no tone loss, and it can go from the more traditional "sharp/flat" and strobe tuning. All these make it a very flexible and efficient pedal. Efficient does not mean effective, however. It's about as accurate as a Boss TU-3 but not as much as a Korg Pitchblack, Peterson, or Sonic Research tuner. Its tracking isn't the greatest, notes take a while to register, and it has issues with basses. These are also hit and miss and from what I've seen and read they have pretty lackluster QC. It isn't very pedalboard friendly, either, as the rubber causes the sticky side of velcro to have adhesion issues, unless you're using industrial or heavy strength stuff. Overall I'd say it's certainly an option if you buy used, but due to its bad tracking and QC issues I'd strongly recommend one of the others I mentioned.
It offers a lot of flexibility. It's true bypass, easy to read, can go between "sharp/flat" and strobe display, and has 2 power jacks to allow for easier daisy chaining.
This sucker is dense and heavy. It feels heavier than my Moogerfoogers! The bypass signal is clean and the mute is nice, but there is some noise when muted. The access clip seems very flimsy and prone to breakage, so I'd recommend using an external power supply. Despite its features and heft it doesn't perform as its competition. The tracking is slow, it's accuracy isn't the best, and both its tracking and innacuracy increase exponentially when tuning below the D string on a bass. They also have notorious failure and QC errors (from what I've read there's a 10% chance you'll get a lemon). I've been told that it's "a miracle" mine's lasted all these years without issue.
Value-wise I'd say it's very middle of the road. If you can find it used then hey, why not, but I would not buy new. Look at the Boss TU-3, Korg Pitchblack, Peterson, Sonic Research Turbo Tuner, or TC Electronic Polytuner instead.

        Not so good

Comments about Planet Waves PW-CT-04 Chromatic Pedal Stage Tuner:

It may seem like a heavy duty pedal but its made with diecast parts, which break really easy. I'll never own another one, unless Planet Waves gives them away.
Great Features. Brightly lit, lots of features like by pass, silent tuning.
I've had two of these. On both of them the little arms that keep the stomp pad in place broke rendering it almost useless
Good price, but not when they break every 3 years.

        GREAT tuner pedal!

Comments about Planet Waves PW-CT-04 Chromatic Pedal Stage Tuner:

I have owned this pedal for a little over two years now. It takes a lot of abuse but still works perfect. The first one I purchased however was a lemon; sometimes not turning on at all and just a glitchy little guy. I would advise getting a warranty or performance guarantee on this pedal because they can be factory faulty. Having said that, owning one that works perfect is awesome! The display on the pedal is large and bright so I can see my tuning in even the darkest of settings. I especially love how the pitch display moves in a circular motion. Its cool when you bend up and the tuner display spins like a sundial in fast forward. I paid twice as much as the pedal is advertised now, so If you get one with a guarantee, you are getting a hell of a deal because this pedal is unique and easily readable. GET ONE, DO IT, DO IT NOW!

Not bad but not the best value

Comments about Planet Waves PW-CT-04 Chromatic Pedal Stage Tuner:

Mine broke the first week I got it. Latch to battery compartment. I used it anyway like that for a about 6 months because I did not want to RA it back to them. Sometimes it failed to intialized at all, randomly. Would turn on but would not accept guitar input. Then it finally failed completely. RA it in. They sent me a brand new one but it took a few weeks so I got a TC Electronics PolyTune. OMG. Night and day. Love it to death. Get you a polytune!!!!

The only Tuner i'll ever use.

Comments about Planet Waves PW-CT-04 Chromatic Pedal Stage Tuner:

This is the best pedal tuner i have used. it is a very strong metal casing so it has lasted being dropped and shipped around from gig to gig. the only real downside for me is that the lights can be a bit hard to see when you are playing in daylight outside. i even bought a few extra used ones for backups and for friends and bandmates. i had one that had the dial fall into the pedal, and the power adapter broke and fell into the pedal. i emailed planet waves, they gave me a confirmation # and RA # then i shipped back and got my new one in about 3-5 days. there was no real hassle to me except the $5.00 price to pay to ship it to them. they didn't charge any fees or anything like that. i run basically on power adapters so the clips still work in all my tuners. and i've had a couple with loose dials on top which i have just used a little superglue to hold it in place. once i did that they have been fine. i actually like the analog nature of this model, i think if they had been digital there would be more issues, because of the extra chips and things involved. so for me the old one is the best one. don't get to hung up on what people say about this, i have had my main one since they first came out several years ago and it is still working as well as it always has. it is very reliable and durable.

Comments about Planet Waves PW-CT-04 Chromatic Pedal Stage Tuner:

Great tuner because of the visibility. The heavy metal case keeps it in place on the floor not sliding around. Yeh, the clip breaks but it will still work fine without that clip. I had numerous problems with mine. It wouldn't bypass the amp, the off/on switch failed, plus the clip as I mentioned. I think this idea is great but they need to make a few modifications before I buy one again. The customer service might be good, we'll see shortly. I want to be optomistic.

Extremely quick, accurate and easy to use, huge display. My plastic hinge broke too hence the 3.5 in quality seeing as it happened to almost everyone, if this got fixed it would by far be the best pedal tuner.

Comments about Planet Waves PW-CT-04 Chromatic Pedal Stage Tuner:

I will not be buying the tuner again. i had it two weeks before the hinge for the foot pedal broke after falling less than two feet from the top of my amp. that is not rugged. it eats batteries way too fast for how much i actually have it turned on. the absolute worst thing about it is that it's illegible in direct sunlight. this makes it useless for outdoor festivals which is a deal breaker for me. this is fine for the occasional gig or studio but i'm sure that there are better and cheaper options for that.

Comments about Planet Waves PW-CT-04 Chromatic Pedal Stage Tuner:

Exactly the same problem! Let me say I loved this tuner... great lighting for low light gigs...great tuning accuracy.. but WHY make it so rugged when you're going to give it an Achilles heel like the plastic clip on the front... One international baggage handler or rough roadie later and you have a useless pedal... lets face it tuning pedals are way too expensive anyway for what they do... this ends up being a kick in the proverbial crown jewels... :(
