I bought this tuner for my son who is just learning to play electric bass in the school band. It has been perfect for him! He can tune quickly and get to work, especially when there is lots of noise and commotion. I can teach him to tune by ear at home where its quiet, but that can be stressful for an 11 year old just trying to get started with only 30 minutes of band time.
I've tested it out at home to be sure that it really tunes as it should and it is spot on. 5 stars for a tuner that works in noisy places when you can't depend just on your ears!
I haven't bought one for my gigs, but as quickly as he tunes and as much as he loves his I am about to be persuaded!

Pedal and headstock tuners are easier to use and give me more confidence that the string is in tune.
This unit has the two LEDs, a note selection wheel, and a pointed tip to allow it to be used as a pick. The selection wheel is hard to turn so I had to use both hands to move from note to note making tuning with this take much longer than it would with a pedal or headstock tuner that simply senses the note.
LEDs are dim, wheel is hard to turn.
A good headstock tuner can be had for the same price or less, Get one of those.

Comments about Planet Waves S.O.S. Strobe Pick Bass Tuner:
I love this tuner, it has replaced my pedal tuner for my live rig. The LED/strobe method is quick and easy with a little practice. I hope S.O.S. releases a bigger version with more options, as I would rather pay a healthy amount for one really nice, palm sized LED tuner, rather than buy a bunch cheap, really small, limited LED tuners.
The main idea behind this tuner works: small, easy to use, very accurate, quick tuning. However this tuner suffers from being too small, for two reasons. 1) Too easy to lose. 2) Not enough room for some missing basic features. The selector wheel only offers a handful of notes to choose from, so if you play in Eb, or drop C, then you will have to fret a note in order to tune that string. There is also no way to change the pitch from A440.
Again, too small, and not exactly indestructible.
Is there a cheaper tuner out there?
Comments about Planet Waves S.O.S. Strobe Pick Bass Tuner:
This was the only tuner that would work in the setting I needed it to?wind ensemble. I played upright string bass in a university wind ensemble. The winds would be so loud warming up this is the only thing I could use to tune with. I tried many different tuners even with clip on pick ups with no luck. I play guitar and had seen this a couple years before I played string bass and thought what a joke and a gimmick. For bass this thing is perfect. Nothing is better. Now I also use the bass version to tune my acoustic guitar, and that's a different story. It works fine on the lower strings, but on the high thin strings of a guitar you have to really watch it closely. It still works on these higher strings. I use it all the time for them, but if all the strings were as thin as the high ones it would be a bust. All and all this thing is awesome and ever thing player including guitarist should have one! Don't be a cheapskate buy one and give it a little time. You'll love it too.
Comments about Planet Waves S.O.S. Strobe Pick Bass Tuner:
This tuner is awesome! I've used it on stage with tons of noise around, for acoustic or electric guitar. You don't need to be able to hear anything, and there's no jumpy needle or led's blinking all over a pedal. In the dark, or out in the sun, you just aim it at the 12th fret and get perfect tuning. You do need to have the strings in the right realm- within a step or two. I take this to shows and tune every guitar I have for sale with it in a few minutes.
Comments about Planet Waves S.O.S. Strobe Pick Bass Tuner:
Forget plugging your bass into any other tuner, this little baby's got it goin on! Takes a little practice, but this intelligent pick-style strobe tuner can be used between songs, during songs, in the dark, in the light, at rehearsal, at gigs, or if other players are doing their loud thing. I measured the results of this thing and compared it to two other tuners with incredibly accurate results. Get one!
Comments about Planet Waves S.O.S. Strobe Pick Bass Tuner:
The Planet Waves S.O.S. Strobe Pick Bass Tuner is tiny, easy to use and accurate. I purchased several of them and was initially amazed at how good of a tuner they are. After almost a year I've gone through five of them, though. While I do use them frequently and on a daily basis, I haven't abused them at all. Even so, when I run out, I'll be buying a few new ones. They're perfect in your guitar case as cheap, accurate backups. Also the best affordable tuner I can think of to tune acoustic guitars without electronics. I wouldn't rely on them as a full time stage tuner unless you want to replace them frequently. Overall, a good value for a very useful tool. I'd be willing to pay more for a more durable, well lit chromatic version.
Comments about Planet Waves S.O.S. Strobe Pick Bass Tuner:
I like this "pick" so much. I paid the same as for a regular pick that thick, lol,..I took a little while the first time because I was exploring the pros and cons. I think there is only pros. Great value, cool "keychain", effective, simple,... Well, maybe too simple. What I miss is a calibration feature since I play along with bamboo flutes at the outdoor,a 430-450hz range would be really appreciated, but I'm not complaining nor I'm saying it's a con.You can't get a full featured tuner for that price. The only two things you have to have in mind are. First, since you can't see the string selection when it's too dark, you'll have to have it memorized. That's why I adopted the habit of using the same off position when done(between C and B selections), so the next time I'll know what's going on even in the dark. The latest version comes with lighted letters though. Second, you'll have to coarse tune by ear at first and then fine tune with the S.O.S. because it wont tell you what note it is and you can't see any movement if the string is far from the right tone.It makes a nice gift also.A good buy overall.

this little guy is accurate enough for you to tune your bass in a matter of seconds, its easy to use and its cheap you can't help but be impressed it doesn't crap out like many other tuners after a week or so it keeps going and going and going and going. if you get the chance buy it.
Comments about Planet Waves S.O.S. Strobe Pick Bass Tuner:
The Planet Waves Strobe Tuner is a must have for every guitarist's bag O toys. Very easy to use (even in darkness and noisey environments). Talk about durability, I accidentally left it in my jeans pocket and they went into the washer and dryer and when I opened the drier door - there was my little tuner - turned it on, rotated the dial thru a time or two and it still worked great (and still does, a year later - even with the same battery.) The only thing that it really needs (are you listening Planet Waves?) is a small metal loop so you could clip it onto a keychain - then it would be perfect! Get one (or a few!)
