You get visual confirmation that you're in tune right on each string!

The unique pick-sized Planet Waves SOS Strobe Tuner uses Planet Wave's revolutionary Strobe-On-String technology. If you've set a turntable's pitch via a stroboscopic control or use harmonic comparative tuning at multiple fret points to tune a guitar, you will immediately get the concept.

Barely bigger than a guitar pick, the SOS Tuner emits 2 out-of-phase LED light beams onto the vibrating string. The 2 beams dance on the string when it's out of tune, slow down as you approach pitch, and stop when you're in tune. A thumbwheel selects the correct LED output for each string, making the Planet Waves SOS Tuner specific to 6-string guitars. Since it relies strictly on visuals, the SOS Tuner is ideal for noisy and dim situations.

NOTE: The Planet Waves SOS Strobe Tuner only works with 6-string guitars in standard tuning. The tuner's lights may be difficult to see on some clear nylon classical guitar treble strings.

I tested this tuner against the Boss TU-2, an industry standard, and the Seiko ST737Ease of useThis tuner requires you to select what string you are tuning prior to tuning that string so it is not as fast as either competitor. It also requires higher concentration because instead of matching a needle or light to a center position you must judge when the reflections on the string stop moving up and down. The knob to select the string is not illuminated so you might not be able to see what string is selected on a dark stage. Seeing the lights is easier in the dark but in bright sunlight one might have trouble. The battery is easy to replace and the tuner fits easily into your pocket. The manual that comes with it is easy to understand and comes in 6 languages.AccuracyUsing a modified Epiphone Dot into the TU-2 the S.O.S. performed almost perfectly. However you must be picky to achieve an optimum +/- 3 cent. (Which for those who don?t know, 1 cent is 1/100 of a semi-tone) The tuner boasts its ability to tune in noisy environments. For this test I used a Seagull S6+ Cedar GT and placed the microphone of my Seiko halfway in between a stereo speaker and the sound hole of the guitar. I turned the volume a fair amount higher than the point which the Seiko didn?t register the guitar. The S.O.S. tuned perfectly.AS A SIDE NOTE. Planet waves quoats a +/-0.4% accuracy. wait a second, how can a 20 dollar tuner be so much more accurate than a $150 boss TU-2. the answer is that th SOS's accuracy is based on sine wave theory. because the lights flash at a controlled frequency the only thing tha would cause error is a lower powered battery ( which would cause the frequency to drop very slightly), or an LED taking a fraction of a millisecond to begin to emit light. if you can tell me that you can even move a fine tuning knob, if you are so privilaged, on your guitar so much as 0.4 cents difference and have it sounding better, and in less time mind you, than a boss tu-2 or such type tuner then all the power to you. the human eye is debated to see from 24 to 100 frames per second. mind you the frequency of an A string, the second lowest, is 440 Hz. your eye can't see is your .4 cents off or 4 cents off. dont get me wrong, this tuner is acurate but only as acurate as you are willing to sit there and debate if the lights are "dancing" or just crawling on at an unimajinably slow rate. When to use itUse it at an acoustic gig because it will tune in noise and does not require a ? jack. Also use it an electric gig if you do not use a tuner with a bypass. If something else is going on between songs and you have time to tune, noise will not distract it. When NOT to use itDo not use it if you are playing on a bright sunny day or in pitch dark. Anywhere in between is fine. If speed is of the essence you should use a automatic needle type tuner as it is sometimes difficult to judge the movement of the strings and you are required to select the desired string to tune. Do not use it for alternate tunings, 7 string guitars (as it only has 6 string selections), or bass guitars as it is only designed for 6 string guitars tuned at 440 Hz. Do not use it to adjust intonation as it is useless for this function.

I got this thing as a value pack with 5 sets of DiAddario strings. It's a facinating little thing... I guess there is two frequencies of light broadcast on the strings. While they vibrate the 2 lights are supposed to steady out as you narrow down on the tuning of that particular string. It gets a little irratating getting a fine tune and I am not to confident that it actually does the trick because if you redo it right away it seems different the next time. I haven't used it in a while, mainly because it is easier to get a rough tune in on my guitars without it. If I want it more accurate I'll use something else (my ear). Actually, I can't fathom being trapped in a club some where with this as my only tuning aid. As far as durability goes, I can't say that there is any real mileage on this thing to call it other than "brand new", but it doesn't feel like anything that you would use as a wedge for splitting wood like a Boss box. Needless to say, since I forgot I had it, I put very little value on it to say the least. I guess I'll give it to the grand kids to fool around with some day when they get old enough to use it as ???? something or other. For those I'd consider a perfect candidate to be happy with one of these: Maybe a poor, deaf guitar player.

        Nice when it works

Comments about Planet Waves SOS Strobe Pick Tuner:

These tuners are great on noisy stages and low light conditions, but the main problem is that they die randomly all the time. I've had one die on me on stage, one die right before a big classical guitar jury, and the other four died randomly during practice. I've been through six in about a year and a half, simply because fine china is more durable, but it is also one of my favorite tuners. It needs to be redesigned for the practical musician, not just the musician that babies all of his gear.

        Works wonderfully...when it works

Comments about Planet Waves SOS Strobe Pick Tuner:

This tuner is the best one I've found for acoustic guitars. Unlike mic-based tuners, you can use it in noisy environments. It's always dead-on and doesn't suffer from the granularity issues of mic-based tuner displays (especially the cheapest ones that just give you three lights for "flat", "sharp", and "in tune").That said, I'm currently on my third SOS Tuner because the first two broke after a couple months of use. The first suffered from a bad battery enclosure that forced me to hold the tuner very tightly to keep it working during its last functional month. The other died without warning. This one has lasted a year so far with no problems. Two of my friends own this tuner as well, and both ended up buying a second after their first one broke.Though they've been pretty flaky in my experience, I'm still a fan. If this one breaks, I'll begrudgingly buy another. At least they're relatively inexpensive.

        Disposable Tuner

Comments about Planet Waves SOS Strobe Pick Tuner:

This tuner is a cool novelty item, but it is a Bic lighter of a tuner. I only used it a few times, it seemed to work best in low light conditions, but you need light to see the lettering on the switch. It quit lighting up after 3 or 4 weeks of occasional use, I replaced the batteries, but it was the tuner itself that was toast. I tossed it in the trash like a spent Bic. These tuners should come in packs of 6 for $10.Planet Waves has a swing and a miss with this product priced at $15 per piece.

        Handy, portable, and works great!

I really like this little thing! You can tune anywhere, regardless of the environment. The ability to tune in the dark or in loud situations make it incredibly useful. It does take a little getting used to, but after messing around with it a few times, it's second nature. Sure, if I was plugged in, nothing beats my Boss tu-8, but the strobe tuner works for most situations. Makes a great gift too!

Broke after first time using it.

Comments about Planet Waves SOS Strobe Pick Tuner:

All I can say it stopped strobing on my second time using it. I had it in my pocket thinking it would be great to have a tuner on a key chain. Tuning wheel is cheap. Im a audio repair person by trade so I opened it up to see if it could be fixed, not! Cheap components used, pcb etc.It also is not bright so tuning in bright light is not very good. You better off tuning by ear.

I received this free with an order of strings. It works perfectly as described and I find it to be more acurate than most other FAR more expensive electronic tuners. If you are old enough to have owned a belt-driven turntable with adjustable speed you'll intuitively know how to use this. Simply put- it's perfectly acurate, small enough to fit in your pocket, and works as well in the dark as in a lit studio. I love it!

        Works Great

This is a cool little gadget you'll be glad to have when you need it. What I like about it over other tuning methods, is you don't have to plug anything in, or attach anything, and you don't need light or sound. With this little thing in the palm of your hand, you can quickly and accurately get tuned up without changing anything. That makes this little thing a gem in the studio. And it's cute as a button, too. :)

        I love this thing

Comments about Planet Waves SOS Strobe Pick Tuner:

This tuner is super clutch! I have tried other tuners, all of which were bulky and stationary (try putting a BOSS tuner pedal in your pocket) or hard to really get dead on (pitchpipe type). This guy fits in your pocket without you even feeling it, and will tune you up dead on with no guessing. It works in three steps 1)turn the wheel to the string you need to tune 2)pluck the string with the lights flashing on it 3)turn the tuning peg until the lights stop moving and remain stationary. I will buy another one of these guys the second mine kicks the bucket (3+years strong so far).

Got this free when I bought strings, had I paid for it, I would have been disappointed. Planet Waves does a poor job of explaining what being in-tune looks like. A close-up video would have helped.
