Yes, they can break if you really flex them and play super aggressive. Or even after a few weeks of "normal" playing. But that's a side-effect I can live with for an otherwise fantastic pick. They're not the standard nylon like you're used to. It's a slightly thicker, rubbery/plasticy pick. But the best feature is the grip area, it's a raised design on both sides of the pick made of some heavy duty rubber. These feel great in my hand. Not rough like other grip picks, but solid on both sides of the pick for my thumb and finger to wedge nicely into. The mediums are the best, imho, and they sound great with an acoustic: slightly softer attack because of the rubbery-ish material, but not so rubbery that it's dull or grabby. Just right. If the pick breaks, just grab a new one. Problem solved :)

Hey there guys (and gals)...just wanted to tell you that I was rather disappointed with the arrival of these picks. I had previously read all the reviews (some were quite good) and so I took my chances, allured mostly by the cool design. I ordered the 'heavy' guage which are labeled on the box as 1.17mm. They seem to be constructed with a very lightweight and possibly brittle translucent plastic, and the white grippy substance in the central region does not feel like rubber, but rather feels like a different type of plastic. As an alternative, Dunlop 'max grips' (nylon) seem considerably better in quality and grip-a-bility. My 2 cents worth only, but these Planet Waves Surepicks are not quite my cup of tea.

I use the medium's (.91mm) and I play heavy metal and this gauge hasn't broken on me yet. Of course, I use a bit of finesse, but I also dig in when needed. One think I like about these besides the blue color and cool graphic, is it's attack; because I like to 'choke up' on my pick for a tighter attack, but with the Suregrip pick, I don't have to; I get a combination of sure-fire attack and freedom. The 'surf's up' graphic keeps the pick from moving around and keeps the focus on good tone and hopefully better playing.I love Planet Waves products and here they impress me again. :D
Comments about Planet Waves Surepick Grip Guitar Picks 5 Pack:
I agree with some other reviewers in that the picks cracked and broke too quickly, some right away. The sound was good over all, so I am already trying the cheaper Planet waves ones without the grip, I think they're a better choice.
Comments about Planet Waves Surepick Grip Guitar Picks 5 Pack:
Iv'e been playing with these picks for about 3 years and all I can praise them on is thier amazing grip. However the value of the pick sin't that great, they will you about a week or two with the heavy gauge. It's great for metal! So if you don't mind swapping picks every so often, go for it!
Comments about Planet Waves Surepick Grip Guitar Picks 5 Pack:
I bought a heavy gauge pack of these a year ago, and I absolutely love them. There's always a few in my pocket, ready to be played. From what I've read, the breaking issue is only with the light and medium gauge models, and does not apply at ALL to the heavier model. These things are tough. Also: I only noticed this a few months ago, but if you hold these up to the light and look at the logo, you'll see something VERY cool. :P
Comments about Planet Waves Surepick Grip Guitar Picks 5 Pack:
I bought some of these for the all too familiar never ending super master one and only favorite pick search. As many have already said Great pick just breaks too easily. Had five when I started a gig one night had none after 1st set. If you like these buy lots and lots of them cause you will burn through them... if you like thumpin your strings.
Comments about Planet Waves Surepick Grip Guitar Picks 5 Pack:
While it's true that these picks are easier to hold onto, they have a fatal flaw: the soft grip goes all the way through them. These things break like twigs, I ran through a pack in a week. They'd be great if the grip didn't go through them, though.

this is so cool!!! i got these with a postal monkey case (also cool). you never drop them. buy them they rule PS: medium are best
Comments about Planet Waves Surepick Grip Guitar Picks 5 Pack:
I played 1.0 mm Jim Dunlop black nylon picks for 25 years. Now, I'm hooked on medium Planet Waves Surepick Grip Guitar Picks. They break too easily, but they are an improvement.
