Up until a few weeks ago, I had never strummed a guitar. Then I saw Buddy Guy one night in Salina.I took a mission to learn, and while surfing this site spotted this gadget, read the reviews and decided it was worth a shot.Man, I am soooo green..and that aint no ordinary fiddle Lionel Young plays..The first day with this, my 56yo little finger could not work the plunger set to its softest setting -without screaming in pain. I'm working this with the tips of the fingers to strengthen and train to not accidentally mute adjacent strings.I had problems with the end of my pinky..seemed like the cartilage didnt want to settle in with being pressed on the very tip. -it really hurt.In short; this works.I gave it a 4.5 overall because the plunger pads are contoured (not flat like a fretboard) and could maybe benefit from having raised lines to simulate strings because I need both finger strength and toughened skin, but on the bottom of the exerciser, under the removable rubber cap, are a set of hard plastic molded-in lines that simulate strings, but not at the correct spacings.Anyway, day one I could only get my pinky to press 4 times before it was screaming time-out. but after just 3 days I can now squish on it all day and will soon crank up the plunger tension. The immediate result is I can attempt to play more chords before my hand gives out. This is an effective device!

I ordered this because the variable tension interested me, and on this promise it does deliver, it goes from light to fairly heavy. BUT that's not really the problem, because after a few minutes of using it one of the finger columns (?) popped off. I received excellent customer support and will get a new one, but am wary that the new one will have the same problem. Bottom Line, if you plan on using this, be vary careful with it and do not go fast, as its made completely of plastic (except for the spring). If you do plan to build speed as well as strength, get a Gripmaster, it may not have been made specifically for musicians, but I've had mine for over 10 years and it still works perfectly, (just choose the right tension).

Comments about Planet Waves Varigrip Hand Exerciser:
I don't notice much of a difference when moving the adjustment screws but I like the force setting out-of-the-box. Also, the finger pads are numbered though I didn't notices any reasoning (ie different tensions). I have very wide hands and it fits well in my grip. You never knew how weak your pinky was till you use one of these.

Comments about Planet Waves Varigrip Hand Exerciser:
Very useful tool to develop grip strength! Seems quite sturdy and should last for a long time. The variable tension in the device is neat as it means you can customize each finger's "workout", and it will scale up with you as you improve. I'm still unsure about the usefulness of the callous building side, but still using it regularly.

Comments about Planet Waves Varigrip Hand Exerciser:
I'm learning acoustic/classical guitar. It helped with some finger strength. I worked on a walking technique with it and that went well. Really no cons, but I'm unsure if it's very useful as a whole.

Comments about Planet Waves Varigrip Hand Exerciser:
Since using the Varigrip I have noticed more strength and dexterity in my fretting hand and also improved my fingerstyle playing hand. My trigger finger problem is much less now. Hand was damaged from a dog bite infection. Highly recommended! Best thing I have tried in over 30 years of guitar playing.

Comments about Planet Waves Varigrip Hand Exerciser:
I've been dabbling in guitar on and off for 30 years. My first guitar was a train wreck my parents got me for X-mas, they didn't know...=). The problem I've always had is 2 fold, 1 my index finger has about 3/4 inch missing on it(childhood accident), 2 because of that I don't use my left hand much so its WEAK. In just the first couple week I can already tell a great difference in strength, dexterity, and speed. I can get my fingers to go where I want them to go and don't get as many dead notes cos I'm out of position trying to compensate for the short finger... My salesman was very helpful too helping my pick this VS the plastic webbing type products they might work to but this is working GREAT for me!!! Wish I'd know of or bought one of these years ago I'd prolly be in a band right now...=) Who knows I ain't dead yet...=)

Comments about Planet Waves Varigrip Hand Exerciser:
I saw this and was intrigued. I'd been playing guitar for about 11 months and still needed strength and stamina to hold chords - and dexterity on the fingerboard. This thing allowed very fast improvement in the strength of my little and ring fingers - on both hands. I feel my dexterity is also improving. The springs squeak, though - which bugs my wife and means I can't use it while sitting in the woods hunting deer. And if I use lotion on my calloused fingertips, they slip off the finger pads. But I like it and don't regret buying it.

Comments about Planet Waves Varigrip Hand Exerciser:
I love this little thing. Its well made, sturdy & makes me realize how weak some of my fretting fingers are. I thought this was just a hand exerciser but I can feel muscles in my forearm getting a workout too.
Comments about Planet Waves Varigrip Hand Exerciser:
i use it every day
works perfectly !
solid; should last forever.
worth meany times that price.
Comments about Planet Waves Varigrip Hand Exerciser:
I had been searching for a product of this type. The Varigrip Hand Exerciser is truly a great way to improve the agility, dexterity and speed of you your fingers, while at the same time strengthening them, as well as the hand, wrist, and forearm. All this without having to purchase four or five other types of products to get the same desired results.
I just recently began using the Varigrip H/E and have found it to be very useful in several different ways by developing the fingers, hand, forearm, and wrist muscles. I like the flexilbility of adjusting the tension of the "pistons" for each individual finger. Also, the simulated "guitar strings" are an excellent way to build and maintain finger calluses.
I consider the quality of the Varigrip H/E second to none. It is light weight, easy to use and ergonomically a comfortable fit in the hand. Its material composition appears to be durable and solid.
The Varigrip H/E is very well worth every penny it costs. Buy it! Your hand, forearm, and wrist will 'thank you' for it!
