XLR8 is Planet Waves' unfortunately-named attempt at competing with GHS Fast Fret. It succeeds in effect - it cleans and lubricates strings fairly well, probably just as well as Fast Fret to be honest, leaving them smooth and easy to play. And it's packaged in a more convenient applicator and with a metal case that (supposedly) increases life span.
Unfortunately, XLR8 does not last long. At all. I purchased some at a local music store as an alternative to Fast Fret. Despite storing it in the metal tin at all times and using it twice per play session as recommended, it only lasted, at best, three months. This is in stark contrast to Fast Fret, where a single "stick" will easily last you several years. I've also had string cleaners in standard bottles that have lasted far, far longer.
Simply put, stay away. XLR8 works, but considering how quickly it dries up it's also a waste of money when there are better alternatives out there.

I got one of these for free, so I tried it out. Wow, it really works! I never even considered wanting to lubricate my strings, because I was afraid of gummy stuff. This product cleans the finger dirt off the strings, and leaves a nice slick feel, w/ no residual gunk. Lessens the noise when I move my hands up and down the neck. Pleasantly surprised! I plan on getting one for each guitar and just leaving them in the cases.

Easy to use, works great. I used to get a scratchy sound out of my banjo and changed strings,
picks etc. Used this stuff and now have smooth sailing. I use it ahead of the bridge on my 5-string
and my guitar and it really speeds up the picks.....keeps string bright.
