I recently restored a 1954 Ludwig drum set. It included a 13" mounted and 15" floor tom. Because there were no internal mufflers and calf skin heads would have come standard, I thought I would give Remo a shot and try this drum head. The obvious Remo choices would have been FiberSkyn, Skyntone, Renaissance, Vintage, etc. In my 40+ years playing, I've used just about every "vintage" style head made by Remo and their competitors. I surprisingly like the focused overtone control this head offers while still being a single ply coated head. I use this kit primarily for big band swing and Dixieland jazz combos gigs. I don't always use Remo and this head was not my usual choice to mount on vintage drums. But I have been very pleased and feel no need to change out to something else any time soon.

I got this snare head in a Remo pinstripe pack which I mistakenly thought was coated, but just clear and crappy. All in all, this head doesn't sound too bad, but you have to dampen it and work with it a fair amount. The real problem I had with this head was its durability, this is not for a Powerstroke, it's not even for a medium stroke. Unless you're playing jazz or something where you're tapping this head, it's a goner. I played on this head for 3 months on generally not even a weekly basis and by the end of this term, I was VERY close to busting right through it. All in all, barely decent sound, not durable NOT ALL, I would definitly NOT recommend buying this head.

Outstanding head for small kicks

Comments about Remo Coated Powerstroke 3 Batter Head:

I use this on a 16"x12" kick drum with no resonant head (or rather, a cut-down head) and the sound is great - deep, slightly boomy, and with just enough ring. I was having problems with my 16x16 floor tom competing with the kick before, and I just didn't care for the kick's lack of depth, but this head solved both problems. I get plenty of attack even with a wool beater. Highly recommended.

best snare head ever!

Comments about Remo Coated Powerstroke 3 Batter Head:

my snare is a regular v series mapex. basically, a cheap one that came with the intermediate level kit. and the snare sounded ok. but after i put the remo powerstroke 3 on there, it sounded absolutely perfect!!! it had great pitch and didn't ring out if i tightened it too much. (i tighten my snare pretty tight.) and i was so amazed that just putting on a different head could drastically change the sound! and it sounded so good, that my guitarist complimented it when he sat down to (attempt to) play my drums when i went to get a drink. o and i gave it a 8 for quality because it does wear out faster than my old remo emperor x powerdot head. so if you go on tour or something, keep a few extra heads handy.

Great

Comments about Remo Coated Powerstroke 3 Batter Head:

I use 14 Inch on stock snare (Pulse), with remo internal muffs. At first I sorta disfavored the sound, only to discover just how high the pitch goes, the range is incredible. The coating has begun to crack and peal some, but cosmetics are nothing, the sound is pretty snappy, rather punchy. Very good for a looser snare setting, but if you're like me and choke the snare you may want to get away from that and beging to loosen it, this head is very sensitave to producing sound. Overall, I find it an upgrade to the pinstripe, an already good and already buyable head, must have.

Comments about Remo Coated Powerstroke 3 Batter Head:

I have a Gretsch Renown Cherrywood kit, and the toms have a lot of overtones on them. I tried out the coated Powerstroke 3 heads on them and it really cut down on the ring and made the drums sound great. I would recommend them for anyone looking for good sounding heads to help control overtones.

These previous 3 kids are fools, as seen by drooling over Joey Jordison's snare sound. Yuck City. The fact of the matter is that the PS3 sounds amazing. I put this sucker on my Black Panther and it sounds great. Live it basically eliminates the need for a mic.

Comments about Remo Coated Powerstroke 3 Batter Head:

          .
Alright bought this head a few months ago for a 14 inch walnut stave snare that I built (awesome snare).... and by a few I mean about 3. First thing I noticed was tuned tight it sounded very, almost too, dry/muffled. However, after I tuned it lower (83 on a drum dial) it sounded very good. The next thing that i noticed was bad aswell. The coating on this head (along with most other remos) wore off rather easily. Evans' coating is far supirior over remos. Lastly after only 3 months of playing, the head split right in the middle... with that being said I am a rather heavy hitter. The only snare head, other than this one, that i broke was a stock single ply head that came on the very first drumset I ever got, and that one lasted about a year and a half. This is the fourth head that I had on this snare, the first three were Evans Power center, Evans SD dry, and Remo Sound control. Out of those heads, heres a list of the best ones...
          1. SD dry
          2. SC dot
          3. powerstroke 3
          4. powercenter reverse dot
Overall this head was OK at the start, but after a while it really backfired. If your looking for a good head, go with the Evans SD dry, you wont be disappointed.

This head is the best. I have it for my toms with an ambassador ebony for my resonant head. These heads are very durable. I play heavy music, and I can get a nice, deep, controlled sound.

Comments about Remo Coated Powerstroke 3 Batter Head:

I bought one of these to try on my master's custom maple drums. These drums sound horrible with a double ply head- completely choked off. I was looking for a single ply sound with some control for recording. These heads sound VERY similar to coated ambassadors, with a little edge taken off. The control ring has a very subtle effect. On my 14" mounted floor tom, they were tolerant of a very low tuning and had good punch with a lot of sustain. Exactly what I was looking for.

Comments about Remo Coated Powerstroke 3 Batter Head:

I have a Tama Starclassic black metal snare drum, which is very snappy and has a loud crack. I tried out this Powerstroke 3 coated head on it and man did it sound horrible! This head takes all of the life out of the drum and leaves you with a flabby, trash sound. Do not buy this head! I replaced it with an Evans ST Dry, which is the head with holes around the edges and it came back to life! I suggest that you buy the Evans ST Dry before you even think of buying this head. Listen to Joey Jordison's snare drum on 9.0 Live! That thing cracks!!! He's the drummer for Slipknot, if you didn't know.

I bought the 14in powerstroke 3 stare head, and I must say that I could not be more disappointed with the poor sound and response that it gave me. I would definitely not buy this head for my snare again. Very very bad sound. I only recomend the weather coated ambassador head for the snare.

Comments about Remo Coated Powerstroke 3 Batter Head:

I put this head on my snare cuz it came with a prepack I bought. I have used similar heads like this from other brands and liked the results...not this time. First off the tone was very dry, and muffled, no articulation for a snare sound. But worst of all, the coating lasted maybe a week, and began to fall away. I'm not saying it's a horrible head, but it's just not what I looking for. I like a very sharp, focused, and pounding snare sound, the kind that cuts through the mix and you could feel it in your gut. And for that a regular single ply coated head does the trick. This is probably best suited for a looser, wet snare style. It would also probably be great on the toms. But it was worth a try...we can't knock different drum heads, you just have to find what works for you.

Comments about Remo Coated Powerstroke 3 Batter Head:

I will only play coated powerstroke 3's on all my drums be it a snare, rack, or floor tom. They are simply the best sounding heads available. They are easier to tune up and you don't really need a ring with these heads. I prefer the coated instead of the clear. I think the coated sounds a little better than the clear and I also like the way my stick articulate on them. I think these are the best heads made.
