OVERVIEW

It's the anytime, anywhere snare!

The RhythmTech Laptop Practice Snare Drum is perfect for unplugged performances, low-volume practice, acoustic rehearsals, and impromptu jams.

The 13" x 1-1/2" RhythmTech Laptop Practice Snare Drum weighs about a pound and incorporates an active snare system. Use the adjustable snare mechanism to loosen or increase tension for a range of response. The Laptop snare captures all the tonal nuances of a standard snare drum when you use brushes and is an excellent practice device to refine your brush technique. The brush sound is so realistic that the Laptop has actually been used as a secret weapon in studio sessions.

I play a lot of acoustic open mike nights and get asked to sit in with people playing all kinds of music, and of varying skill levels. This thing, with a pair of brushes and some elementary brush skills, will allow me to play with ANYBODY. I've accompanied rock bands playing acoustic versions of Green Day, numerous solo acoustic folk guys, j keyobard-bass jazz duet, a bluegrass group and an acoustic blues band...all love this thing.I agree with the other reviews that it is too loud for practicing rudiments with sticks; if you're trying to be quiet, a practice pad would be better suited for that application. For sitting in with acoustic instruments informally or just having something simple to work on your brush technique without having to bring a full-sized snare and stand, this is definitely the way to go. A great product.

I'm primarily a guitarist who has been playing for a zillion years. I'm also a very mediocre drummer who got this just to lay down some simple brush rhythms while friends jam on acoustic guitars. So feel free to take these comments with a grain of salt.

The laptop sounded fine, given its size limitations. The powder-coated head gave a nice drag feeling when played with brushes. The stick sound was also okay. It comes with a nice bag that has a side pocket that will hold a pair of sticks and a set of brushes. In general, from a quality perspective, this is a nice little setup.

I found the playing position, where you balance the laptop on your lap, a little awkward. It ended up being just a little higher than I would position a snare. No big deal for a few minutes, but I started to feel some stress in my arms as I played it longer.

The only other issue I had with it, which unfortunately is the reason I returned it, is that the head is not tuneable. The head isn't tight like a regular snare would be, so I felt virtually no rebound from the head. A better drummer with more technique than I have might be able to make it work, but for me it was a no-go. Ultimately, I ened up returning it and buying a little firecracker snare locally. The price was about the same as the laptop. it's a little bigger, but not much, and it's a real drum. I hold it between my legs while I play; no need to carry a snare stand around, and I can get a more comfortable position than with the laptop.

Pull this out at a swing jam in your friend's living room, start the brushes, and everybody will freak. It's the coolest accessory for the rhythm player, completely portable. Excellent construction and even the bag is very well made. Whoever thought of this should never have to buy another beer, ever.

Comments about RhythmTech Laptop Practice Snare Drum:

Awesome snare. Very trashy out of the box - put a small piece of medical tape between the snares and the head and it tightens up real nice. If you play brushes you'll need to experiment to balance the sound you get with those vs. sticks. After that simple modification, this snare can holds its own alongside most any other. It's a godsend for percussionists who just want a snare without a bunch of stands and racks taking up space. No longer do you have to compromise on sound. The other reviewers have covered it very well; it is indeed a secret weapon. Suggest you grab one while they're on sale. I worry about the non-tuneable, non-replaceable head, but this isn't made for kit drumming - I expect it will last like all RhythmTech stuff.

Comments about RhythmTech Laptop Practice Snare Drum:

I can't believe that more drummers don't know about this snare. It seems like a big secret. When I tell other drummers that I got it, and it works, almost none of them have heard of it. This little snare has a lot of volume. It's not as loud as a full body snare, but it is close. The problem is that the snares rattle horribly. Even when you tighten it all the way, it's still going to rattle on you. A little tape over the snares goes a long way to eliminate the rattle, and after that, it's a great sounding drum.

Rhythm Tech Lap Snare is Grrrreat

    By JC.Chilli

    from Houston

Comments about RhythmTech Laptop Practice Snare Drum:

The lap top snare is wonderful. I go camping a lot with my family band and I was always looking for some way to join in with the music we would play around the camp fire and this little snare works perfectly. I have found that it gets a softer, richer tone when played with brushes. I love this thing.

      Love it!

      By CWMartin

Comments about RhythmTech Laptop Practice Snare Drum:

This is perfect for the on-the-go drummer, beginning drummer, or really any drummer. I got mine new on an eBay auction, and there it included a "DrumCircle" RhythmTech brand muffling ring with rudiments printed on it. That was very cool. It fits easily on a snare stand and has virtually no sympathy vibration. I love this thing!

      Great Portable Snare

      By DaiviDrumr

      from Lexington, Kentucky

Comments about RhythmTech Laptop Practice Snare Drum:

I purchased this product to use for practice on the snare rudiments. I found the unit very well put together. It has a great tone and very good volume. The response is tight (the snares can be adjusted to suit your taste). The unit is put together solid and has a quality carry case that comes with it. I like it even as a second to my larger snare (been considering a picolo snare to add to my kit). This unit has worked well for that purpose. And, it does fit well on a snare stand since it is full size with a real drum head and rim assembly. There are only two slight issues I have with the unit: The 2 screws holding the snare fixture to the bottom of the unit don't allow it to sit flat on a smooth, flat surface. But, 4 rubber feet properly placed takes care of that. Next, it is as loud as my regular snare (or a bit more so). The product description says can be used for quiet practice. Not a chance of that, however; for it is loud. If you want quiet, go to gum or similar. Otherwise, I wouldn't hesitate to buy it.
