Comments about Roland SRX-04 Symphonic Strings Expansion Board:
This board is an excellent choice if you don't have acess to software samplers like Gigastudio and you want to do orchestral string arrangements. They are some of the most realistic sounding sections I've heard and have a nice character which doesn't call attention to itself. They also make sense if you already own the Roland XV and you need strings, rather than go out and purchase a software sampler and the expensive (but comprehensive!) libraries to use with it. The programs show off the samples for the most part and there are some very useful ones you can use right away, but there are also too many 'synthy' string programs which are covered just as well in the XV factory sounds. I wish there had been ROM space on this board for more than two dynamics and some samples like trems are available only at a mp dynamic. This is NOT crippling actually, as you can program some convincing trem swells, etc. with what you are given, it's that good. Given you are going to use something other than an XV-5080 to plug this board into, than 64 voice polyphony is not going to stretch very far with all the layering needed to make these strings work. Dense arrangements will have to be recorded to your multitrack or DAW one part at a time to minimize voice stealing and part 'dropouts'. Some people have complained that the violins sound a little rough or strident, but I have to tell you, that's what violins REALLY DO sound like!! The hall and mic placement and other factors (and maybe post processing) produce the violin sound we hear on great recordings of real sections. So don't be put off one bit, just experiment a little!I would recommend this expansion to any one except those with the finacial resources to purchase string libraries that cost more than an XV AND this board! I use them in serious compositions all the time and am not dissapointed. This could be the best expansion Roland has ever made. Now if they would just do the brass and woodwinds....
