While bass is not my main instrument, I'm enough of a bass lover to have developed quite an ear for the bass. I've played lots of strings and generally like GHS boomers (nickel) for their smooth feel, long life, consistent sound, etc. I've played all kinds of strings over the years (dr, trace elliot, dean markley, d'addario, ghs, fender, sadowsky, etc.)

So, here's the bottom line. The sound of these strings is THE SOUND. Like certain vintage gear, it is impossible to talk about this product without noticing the negative, but that is always outshined by one attribute.... authentic, one-of-a-kind tone. In my experience, these strings can go from live to super dead overnight (cleaning with rubbing alcohol and/or boiling helps for a while). They also feel rough, even more so than typical steel strings (you can get used to it though).

The good, there is a signature crunchiness in the way these strings vibrate against the fretboard that I've never heard with any other string and it instantly reminds me of Chris Squire, Jaco, Geddy Lee, etc. As soon as I find a better string that sounds like this, I'll change my review. Until then, there is nothing I know of that sounds like these and if you're looking for THAT SOUND, this is it!!!

Normally I use roundwound nickel d'addarios, but I heard Geddy Lee uses these so I thought I'd try them out. The strings feel like sandpaper and unless your playing anything but whole notes the strings constantly grab and tear up your fingers, basically eliminating any speed in your playing. Also, there is a ton of fret noise. I had high expectations for these strings but they're unplayable in my opinion.

Comments about Rotosound RS66LD Long Scale Swing 66 Bass Strings:

An old friend, Rotosound has always been my choice of bass string since The Who Sell Out album. "Keep your band together, with Rotosound strings... more music, more music, more music". Excellent quality, long lasting, great sounding strings. I bought into John Entwistle's endorsement on that album many decades ago and have never regretted it.

Comments about Rotosound RS66LD Long Scale Swing 66 Bass Strings:

What more can you say about such classic strings. I use them on my fretted, fretless, acoustic and now my Steinberger. They are always consistent and have a great tone on any bass I've ever put them on.

These things lasted quite a long time but I guarantee they would've lasted longer if I ever washed my hands before playing or cleaned my strings up afterwards. But nonetheless GREAT BUY!

Some people hate Rotosound. They claim they chew up your frets. A lot of dealers won't carry them for this reason. I have them on 5 different basses and have never had a fret wear problem. Nothing sounds as bright and treble-y for soloing IMHO. And they sound new for a long long time.

Tried numerous brands (DR, D'addario, Fender, Ernie Ball), but nothing compares to the tone and playability of Rotosound Swing Bass strings. I've used both roundwounds and flats, but prefer the rounds. Paired with my various Fender Jazz Basses, they deliver great low and mid tones, but excel at the high-end, allowing your bass tone to shine in any performance!
