I'm putting in my two cents here to let you know that these strings are not for everyone. I have a Fender Jaguar short scale that I absolutely love. However, these strings completely changed the tone. I liked the steely twang of the Fender strings but was hoping to eliminate fret noise with the flat wounds. The RS77s are spectacular in eliminating fret noise. However, the tone is extremely dull, nearly dead. My Jaguar sounded like an upright bass when I was done putting them on. Definitely not the sound that I was looking for. I tried both P and J pickups and adjusting tone, but couldn't get a single tone I liked. So for me, this was a complete loss. I couldn't get them off fast enough.

Bottom line is that judging from the reviews here, you have a nine out of ten chance of liking these strings. Just be aware that if you like a bright steely tone, these might not be for you. Good luck!

Comments about Rotosound RS77S Short Scale Jazz Bass Monel Flat Wound Strings:

I use these on a Hofner Beatle Bass, a Mustang, and an Epiphone version of the EB-2, and I couldn't be any happier. After reading that the Beatles used a Monel flatwound bass set on their basses, I went about trying to find one and came across these. They've got the smooth tone that you would expect without any undesirable characteristics. I would not recommend them for slap and pop, but if that's your style, I doubt you'd be looking into short scale or flatwound strings. However, if you're looking to get a vintage '60s tone, these are the strings for you. They make it easy to dial in a sound comparable to The Beatles/The Stones/The Association/The Monkees/The Byrds and other early-to-mid '60s rock acts. They're all that I use on my short string basses. I've never broke a string, and the tone stays new and consistent over a long period of time, even with gig usage. I give them five stars.

Comments about Rotosound RS77S Short Scale Jazz Bass Monel Flat Wound Strings:

I bought these to put on a cheap Squier Bronco. I'm a guitarist, but I use a Bronco for recording. I wanted flatwounds to help keep the fingernoise to a minimum while in the studio. I was afraid that flatwounds would kill the high end tone, but these are made differently, according to Rotosound. They absolutely transformed the bass. It is a joy to play, it sounds brilliant, and I can't put it down. Makes me want to get the Hofner I should have bought in the first place. I HIGHLY recommend these strings.

    Not for Gibson SG

    By J Jack Flash

Comments about Rotosound RS77S Short Scale Jazz Bass Monel Flat Wound Strings:

I bought these for my Gibson SG reissue. I wanted flats and read the good reviews, so I tried them. My set came with silk wrappings on the ball ends. On the SG, the anchor point on the bridge is very close to the saddle so the silk overlaps the saddle and mutes the string. After a long and tedious time removing the silk from the ends, I strung them up. They are good strings but the light guage was too mellow for my liking. I replaced them with LaBella beatle bass flats and couldn't be happier.

Comments about Rotosound RS77S Short Scale Jazz Bass Monel Flat Wound Strings:

These are great strings. Roto makes great strings. Deep, percussive, but still articulate enough for recording, fast runs, and low notes don't turn to mush. Be careful on the length, this is true with most string makers. I usually go medium scale for short scale so I don't end up with fabric in the nut, or worst, on the fret. Remember, a great deal of your tone comes from the string striking the nut properly. That's why plastic sounds different than bone, graph sounds different than brass. If you have cloth in the nut slot, you are robbing yourself of tone.
As I said in the title, great if you know what you are buying. Here's a hint for the many players out there who feel compelled to negatively rate a string because it doesn't fit your style of playing. Hey, you don't buy flatwounds to slap, or chug, or slam. You buy them for their intended purpose; a nice mellow groove. Just because your ignorance on string type led you to a bad purchase, don't rate the strings bad.

      I'm a believer

      By Devi

      from Triple Springs, NC

Comments about Rotosound RS77S Short Scale Jazz Bass Monel Flat Wound Strings:

There aren't many options for short scale basses either in instruments or strings, and that can leave you in a corner. I decided to try flatwound strings for several different reasons and I am so glad I did. These strings have a great slick almost rubbery feel and a super warm sound that almost reminds you of an upright bass. There's virtually no noise off these strings and despite what people will tell you, they ARE easier on your fingers. I can't believe it took me so long to try these out; but I am never going back to roundwounds again. If you're looking for a smooth tone this is what you want. They're expensive, but you're getting what you pay for-and great sound is priceless!

Comments about Rotosound RS77S Short Scale Jazz Bass Monel Flat Wound Strings:

I took up bass at our church a few months ago. My friend (an excellent gutarist and bassist) played my bass after he heard me ripping it at practice. We both agree the RotoSound strings really made the difference on this guitar. These are now my #1 strings. Oh by the way my friend is switching to RotoSound strings on his guitar and bass.
Right our of the wrapping they felt great. Put them on my new Squier Jaguar SS and went to for a walk on the any side, Christian, Christian Rock, Rock, Blues, Jazz, 60's Beatles thump, C&W, you name it. Smooth as silk with great sustain and sound.
Rotosound RS77S Short Scale Jazz Bass Strings are A number 1. These Strings fit and tuned perfectly.
I have looked at other flat wound strings for more money at my local shop. Also you are limited in short scale bass strings so I dont find these too expensive for what you get. They are a great value. You do get what you pay for.

The E string has been used. The ball end had a bend where it went over the bridge and the other end was all bent up. Selling used strings as new is unacceptable. Returning them is not worth the expense so no more strings ordered here!

Picked up a set of the RS77 short scale flatwounds for my Ibanez Artcore. Thought I would try flats out for some of the 60's stuff my band is playing. Great sound and feel, they mellow out really quickly, and give you that awesome thumpy sound and feel. Also have to mention the service from MF - original order came with 3 short scale and 1 long scale. Wrote MF, explained that 1 of these strings was of no use to me, they apologized and sent out another set of strings to me. Great customer service!

Comments about Rotosound RS77S Short Scale Jazz Bass Monel Flat Wound Strings:

I bought this set for a 60's Carvin short scale bass. The actual length of these strings (in inches) is not indicated on the package or the Musicians Friend page. Bummer, because they are soooo short that the cloth winding begins in the middle of my first fret. This bass isn't a child's toy, but it is a short scale. Of course, once the package was opened (how else to discover this problem?) the product cannot be returned. Boo!

Which raises the question: Is it really necessary to get *special* short scale strings for a smaller bass? Why are they made?

I originally ordered the Short Scale ones for the Epiphone Viola Bass and then found out that the Medium lengths are best suited for this bass because of the design of the bridge. Nice full, smooth sound. Less expensive than the Deep Talkin', but, in my opinion, just as good. Very happy with the sound and play-ability of these strings on the Epiphone.

I recently bought an Epiphone EB-O, and wasn't very impressed with the bright tone and annoying fret buzz. It came with roundwounds and I read somewhere that these would improve the tone. They did that AND now I don't buzz much at all, except when I get so tired I can barely play because I'm having so much fun with these silky-smooth babies! They seem to be what my bass was made for, and are worth every penny.
