In case you are unaware, Ruby does not actually make tubes. They package tubes from other manufacturers. The description describes this as a low gain Tesla. If you are looking for a low gain 12AX7, this is really not it. Ruby sells several 12AX7s and this is the higher gain of them. The lower gain versions are the Sino Chinese tubes from the Shuguang factory. This is a JJ branded Tesla from Slovakia. I've tried several tubes including the Russian EH and Sovteks and find the JJs to sound best and be most consistant. I've stopped wasting time and money tracking down vintage tubes and am very happy with the JJs for all of my bass and guitar amps. By the way, if you are going to buy a JJ, I think the Ruby is a better deal. As I said, it is a JJ in a Ruby box. It may be better than one in a JJ box because it is likely that Ruby pretests and picks only those that meet their standards. It is also cheaper. Go figure...

Good enough that I no longer feel the need to seek out vintage RCA, Raytheon, Philips, Telefunkens, etc.

I use these in my Hughes & Kettner units (BATT, Blues Master, Cream Machine & Metal Master) as well as my Fender Champion 600.
Great price for an excellent tube.

these tubes are marketed for hard rock / metal and after installing, my gain, distortion, and sustain were all markedly reduced. my rig sounds nothing like it did before.

Comments about Ruby ECC83 (12AX7A) Preamp Tube:

Vox AD120VTX was distorting and crackling. Replaced both original tubes which were Sovtek and Amp is nice and quiet now. There is no noticeable difference in sound from the original tubes. A great value.

Comments about Ruby ECC83 (12AX7A) Preamp Tube:

I bought this to replace the preamp tube in my Marshall AVT50H amp head. Since NOS (new old stock) original tubes are up to 5 times the cost of this tube now, I needed a less expensive quality replacement for my amp. This works perfectly and reduced the microphonic squeals and hums that the old tube was producing. Highly recommended for Marshalls.

Called Musicians Friend and they sent me another tube and it was marked the same too. Inside the "Ruby" tube packaging was a "JJ" tube with a small sticker marked Ruby 12ax7. The tube was a JJ ECC83S.....again, called Musicians Friend to tell them they were selling a JJ labeled tube that was in a Ruby tube package.

Comments about Ruby ECC83 (12AX7A) Preamp Tube:

Ordered these tubes for my Engl Screamer. First thing I noticed was that the Tubes were made by JJ. The label on the Ruby Box had the number 12AX7ACZ-HG. The description from various websites states "Highest gain 12AX7, great for metal and hard rock. Selected high grade JJ ECC83", not really how they are described here on Musicians Friend.

The Engle Screamer is a 2 channel 4 mode amp that shares the EQ. These tubes helped to tame the piercing highs and made the clean channel much warmer, almost to warm. Missing some of the highs but it did help to balance the eq between the clean and lead channels. I can actually push the high and presence knobs past 12 o'clock. So I guess it made those tones knobs a little more usuable. I still would like to find a tube with 25% more of the highs that I lost.

Comments about Ruby ECC83 (12AX7A) Preamp Tube:

I purchased the AC5 HG+ version of the Ruby 12AX7 for the V1 position in my Hughes & Kettner head (used a Ruby 7025 SS in V2), and it truly improved the sound over the stock tubes, with improved harmonics and more clarity in pick-attack. The sound improvement was CLEARLY noticable...which I didn't expect.

The Ruby's were my third and final choice, previously trying both Tung-Sol and Mullard reissues with unimpressive results on the overdrive. The Tung-Sol did sound a little sweeter on the clean channel, but I preferred the Ruby tubes for distortion...and that is what I'm playing 85% of the time.

Yes, as others here have mentioned, these are re-branded JJ tubes...but I dont think you can find a better quality, low-microphonic tube for the money. For me, a product rating is either "Thumbs Up" or "Thumbs Down", based solely on if I would buy it again...and I would absolutely buy the Ruby tubes again!!

But as Dennis Miller used to say..."Of course, that's just my opinion, I could be wrong."

Comments about Ruby ECC83 (12AX7A) Preamp Tube:

Recently I purchased some 12AX7 Tung-Sols for an SL+ module for my Randall RM1250H. While they did breathe life back into the preamp, it was a bit TOO warm for what I hoped the module would do. So, I sent it to Jaded Faith Mods for a complete overhaul. The owner of the company made the suggestion that I try Ruby tubes instead for gain purposes. When I confirmed this with my cousin who has great experience with tubes he agreed, saying that Sovtek would probably be too noisy for my taste while Ruby was just noisy enough without being overbearing. They were both absolutely right. The Sl+ was converted into the "Bed of Nails #1" module (unofficially dubbed "The Marshall from Hell") & it sounded wonderful with the Tung-Sols still installed, but when I put the Ruby tubes in....the sound I was looking for began to present itself. The Jaded Faith "Bed of Nails #1," with the help of Ruby tubes, gives my Salvation Mods "Camerock" a run for its money (and that's saying a lot.)

Overall the Ruby Tube is what it says it is, which these days is refreshing. It is a sold at a good price and the quality of the product is apparent. I recommend this product
Since its a tube there are no bells and whistles, but fact is, installed in my low end mic pre-amp, it has upgraded the pre-amp. Clean, high gain, warm tone coming out of my microphones. It's walking the walk.
It appears to be well constructed and info from other reviews indicate that it has a good life expectancy. I have used it constantly over the last 2 weeks and it is holding up well.
I looked around at many options, top end-low end, bulk prices vs individual, and bottom line, it is a great deal.
