It's a very simple idea, but remarkably effective. My friend and I play 4-hour acoustic sets once or twice a week with very little practice time inbetween, so our fingers get torn apart by the end of the night. I picked up one of these out of hope and curiosity, and was not disappointed. I've been using it out of habit for the last two weeks (it becomes a habit out of the blue), and realized tonight after our second show in a row that I hardly noticed any pain in my finger tips.

Obviously it's better to just pratice a lot and build callouses from natural guitar playing, but if you're like me and don't have all the time in the world, you might want to pick up one of these. I really love being able to focus on my vocals instead of trying to ignore the pain in my fingers when we hit the 3 hour mark in a show.
Someone else here claimed the grip is much better if half the ridges are filed down to better mimic the spacing on an actual guitar, but I'm not so sure. I would imagine twice as many ridges would result in thicker callouses; it's like pressing down on twice as many strings as normal. Also, one thing I didn't see from the pictures is that the "strings" are built to be like actual wound guitar strings, so they're covered in little ridges, which I think is a great little detail.
Made of hard plastic, nothing special, but anything more would be overkill.
Could be a bit cheaper, but I'd gladly buy it again for the same price.

If you have small hands this could be great.

I'm a tight fit in a men's medium glove and find this thing to be so small that gripping it stresses my fingers in an unhealthy way. My fingers have to close almost into a fist before the item is squeezed between my palm and fingertips. Putting continous force through my fingers in this position hurts and I have had finger pain problems while playing since I started using this thing that I never had before.

I have stopped using it and gone back to using old credit cards with some soft tape on one edge to cushion it against my palm. This lets me compress my fingertips with my grip still half open and does not lead to pain.

simple but effective

Comments about Ruff Rider Ruff Grip Callus Builder:

I take this to work with me or whenever I'm not playing. Just started playing guitar and wanted to be able to practice longer without pain. I dig my fingertips into it and then simulate slides. I've got to where I can make it squeak on slides. One problem I was having was barre chords. I couldn't do more than a couple before my hand got tired. So what I did was turn this thing so that I ran my index finger lengthwise and pushed down as hard as I could for as long as I could while pushing my thumb up just as hard. I never thought I was going to play a Bm but in two weeks I had it going. Only negative was I thought it could have been little wider.

Ruff Grip Callus Builder - where have you been all my life???

By Jeremy Nesse

Comments about Ruff Rider Ruff Grip Callus Builder:

This is a must have. I'm a bass player and I already practice like crazy, gig, use GripMasters... Now I finally can split up my regimen and keep my calluses even when I don't practice. Get a blister in 5 minutes. Let it heal and then go after it again. You'll build up fast!

It's durable and made of plastic. Won't wear any time soon, I'm guessing.
A must have!

A Simple Solution

Comments about Ruff Rider Ruff Grip Callus Builder:

I first saw and tried this at the NAMM convention a few years back. After playing guitar for 39 years, I needed something that would help my callouses remain in good shape when it gets so busy actual guitar sessions are impossible. The added benefit is that the muscle health in my hands has improved with the use of the callouse builder. This has help me with some arthritis pain. Lightly working the item while driving or on the phone is easy and effective. It is so simple it would be hard to improve on!!

works well

Comments about Ruff Rider Ruff Grip Callus Builder:

I am pleasantly surprised by this product. It works very well in keeping my callouses hard when I cannot play for several days or more.

I don't think it specifically is trying to mimc an actual fretboard, so I do not think it matters that it is narrower than an actual guitar fingerboard. All you have to do is get all your fingertips (or a few at a time if you have big fingers) onto the ridges and work them a little and press down some. Feels very much like holding strings down and definitely dents the ends of your fingers like strings do. Nifty invention!

Comments about Ruff Rider Ruff Grip Callus Builder:

I teach guitar and I offer this to students to help build their calluses. Pro's: Good Idea, its simple, quality plastic, small, textered to simulate strings. Cons: for one it shouldn't be $6.00 also the "strings" are way to closed together, I took one and filed down ever other string which made the spacing exactly like a real guitar. Other than that I have no complaints. For those of you who are thinking about buying it it works but only if you use it often.

Comments about Ruff Rider Ruff Grip Callus Builder:

I was happy to see this gadget on the market. I took it off the key chain so I could keep it with me in my pocket. It works if you use it agressively. Press hard and give your finger tips a workout. Nothing beats playing to build calluses, but this is good to carry during the workday.

Comments about Ruff Rider Ruff Grip Callus Builder:

This is a great invention! It really works if you use it on a regular basis. It has also helped me with finger placement on the strings, except for the fact that the simulated strings are very close in relation to a 6 string guitar. I work a lot so it can be hard to practice as much as I would like to. Since you can't bring your guitar with you everywhere... Try this! It worked for me!

      EXCELLENT TOOL...

      By Caliman61

      from Los Angeles

Comments about Ruff Rider Ruff Grip Callus Builder:

Maintaining calluses has been a major challenge over the years. String control is proportional to the time spent on the fretboard, and this nifty little gadget helps extend the fingers "playing" time. The Ruff Rider is not meant to replicate a fretboard. Rather, it provides a wound string-texture (and resistance), in a very compact package, to allow the fingers to continue to work against ?string resistance,? (thereby maintaining callus), even when working with your regular guitar is impractical. For this, it excels! It?s very unobtrusive, and you can use it just about anywhere; commuting, work, bathroom, bed? The simulated strings really help the fingers maintain callus, and the gripping action also helps develop greater grip-strength. Overall, it?s a terrific little item. Only wish I had it when I first began playing?
