Comments about Seymour Duncan Blackouts Modular Preamp:
Have a guitar that just isn't giving you the heavy sound you want? Don't want to spend a fortune going thru different pickups to find that magic combination? This might be your low-cost answer! This preamp is best for heavy rock/ classic metal. It will darken the sound. I use it with a SD JB humbucker in the bridge and a 59' hb in the neck. To me it sounds like my PRS that I installed Blackouts in. Lots of sustain, quiet, thick lead tones, very balanced across the tone chart with power to spare. It does have it's own sound. The preamp has sodier-free connectors, but you will need to do a bit of soldering on the extra volume/tone pots. SD has said they can be used with single coil pu's, but you will get the usual SC hum. I haven't found a wiring diagram for singles though. One preamp module will power 2 humbuckers, extra 25K pots are provided depending on the kit you choose. They have long shaft and short shaft pots. The short-shaft pot kit has only 1 pot though. Not sure why. Check the shaft length of the pots they will be replacing before ordering. And get a fresh 9 volt battery before installing.

Comments about Seymour Duncan Blackouts Modular Preamp:
I have 4 of these in guitars and I just love them! They will add "flavor" to your tone but keep the individuality of the pickup. They work better with low to med output pickups FYI. They are not solderless though so be prepared to spend some time wireing these bad boys. Well worth very cent and leaps and bounds over active pickups!

Great product that does what it is designed to do. Well worth the $55.00 spent on itl.
update to my previous review. I got the tone control issue fixed. Would have helped to use the correct capacitor that came with the kit. Installed it and got all the tone control back that I previously had. So no problems with the tone at all now.
Comments about Seymour Duncan Blackouts Modular Preamp:
Only going to give the product an 8 since it did limit my tone control as compared to what it was without it and it did take away my coil splitting option that I had previously hooked up. Overall, if you are looking for a good active sound without replacing your pickups, this is a good way to do it. The guys in the band even thought it sounded extremely good with the pickup combination I am using. Our other guitar player has a Jackson USA Soloist with an AHB-2 blackout in the bridge and was extremely impressed with how the sound was compared to his setup. Very comparable, not quite the same but different in a good way.

I just installed this in an Ibanez RG321 that I purchased for a project guitar to mess around with. The pickups I am using with it are a Seyomour Duncan Jazz in the neck and a Seymour Duncan Distortion in the bridge. It really does give them an active sound and increased sustain. Not that Seymour Duncan's are lacking in sustain to start with. It was fairly easy to install but is not a completely solderless system and if you don't have any experience with replacing pickups I would not recomend doing it yourself. Only the preamp is solderless, you still have to wire up the jack, 3 way switch, and the tone control. The preamp took an already aggresive bridge pickup and made it even more aggressive, which is what I was looking for without completely buying new pickups. Clean is not to bad either on the neck setting. I wish they could have built a coil split into it though, since it takes some of the versatility out of 4 conductor wiring pickups.
Seems to be built well and I have not had any problems at this time, but still fairly early and I will have to see how well it holds up. Only thing I did not like about the quality is that it uses mini pots instead of full size pots.
Great value if you are looking to upgrade to an active circuit without completely buying a new set of pickups.
