I have tried every pickup out there Fralins, Van Zandt, Fender, Dimarzio, Duncan Antiquities, and I always come back to the ssl-1, to me they are the best vintage strat pickup out there period.

Comments about Seymour Duncan California 50's Single Coil Set SSL-1:

I bought these in hopes that my newest strat would rival my main one (my main strat has a SD Antiquities II in it), this just might be my favorite now with the SSl-1s in my sunburst strat, WOW!!! In comparison, the Antiquities seem to be a tad darker than the SSL-1s, the SSL-1s are a little brighter but they still hold the bottom well and the neck pickup sounds really good, very full. I'm certain that the bridge SSL-1 sounds a little better than the Antiquity (not that the Antiquity bridge sounds bad at all), it's interesting because the SSL-1s have a beautiful piercing clarity to them when hitting single notes specifically that the Antiquities II have but struggle with. Both strats are highway 1s but the SSL-1 strat does have a Fender custom neck upgrade so something to keep in mind, right now, I'm VERY happy with the tones I get out of both of these guitars. If I was going to play a gig with only one of these two guitars, at this point I would play with my new strat with the SSL-1s =) The only negative I can think of about these pickups is that they look new, which they are new but my Antiquities II came looking aged (fake rust specs on them... etc, I know that's super nitpicky but I really wanted to try to think of at least one bad thing about them and that's all I could think of lol.

I bought a set of these to replace my tex mex pickups. And guess what the tex mex were 10 times better. So Im putting the tex mex back in and selling the sds.

Comments about Seymour Duncan California 50's Single Coil Set SSL-1:

Excellent attention to detail in the build of these pickups. I'll describe the tone this way; nice full lows, smooth and not overpowering mids, pristine highs, and not harsh. Sound great clean and with overdrive. They are also very responsive to pick attack and finger picking. Bought these as a replacement set for my Fender American Series Stratocaster (SSS) which had Texas Special pickups. I made the mistake of lowering the staggered magnets and broke the winding way inside next to the pole piece. Learned my lesson and bought these to have the vintage sound. Keeping the original stagger with these and will take good care of them.

Buy these pickups if you want a real vintage strat sound. I pulled tex mex pickups, from Fender road worn 60's strat. The TEX MEX pickups are great, so not a big improvement, but IF you want to get as close as possible to an original early 60's tone, buy these ! I've had many strats including a real 1960, the sound is right on !IF you want HOT, don't buy this set, buy this set for love of vintage tone, not volume etc, tone is the name of the game. This is the sound that made the strat a great all around guitar.

                      Pleasantly suprised

Comments about Seymour Duncan California 50's Single Coil Set SSL-1:

I have a Fender Deluxe Roadhouse Strat with the custom shop texas special pickups. In my opinion, the tx special neck and middle pickups sound great for the most part, but the tx special bridge is just too harsh and trebly; making it almost unusable. I've had the guitar for about 3 years now and decided to try something new in them. I researched and researched and decided on these, and im glad I did!

I'm still toying around with amp/pedal settings but I am in love with these things. I play through a Peavey Classic 50 2x12, Fulltone Fulldrive 2 mosfet, Fulltone OCD, MXR Carbon Copy, and a Pickle Vibe. The over the top harshness of the tx specials is not found in these pickups. Great vintage bell tone. So far I can get an Are You Experienced type of tone, and a John Frusciante tone in there as well, especially the solo tone for "Could Have Lied". These tones arent exact, but definetely in the ballpark which is great because I try not to copy.

Anyhow, if you are looking for a great vintage strat tone, look no futher. Also these suckers are quiet when it comes to the hum; alot better than the tx specials. Easy to install, just taught myself how to solder and they come with an easy to read diagram.

Musicians Friend was great with the shipping. Ordered on Tuesday the 8th and they got her on the 10th! Standard shipping too!
Basic single coil pickups, nice coating on the wires.
                      a great set of pickups.

                      THIS is Strat Tone

Comments about Seymour Duncan California 50's Single Coil Set SSL-1:

Despite it's very modest description which barely takes up a few lines, and it's boring picture, these are the best Strat pickups I've ever encountered. Seymour Duncan is in the business of nailing tone from a pickup level and they've done a good job.

I think the problem is that people want their Strats to sound like something they are not, but trust me, for vintage Strat tone, these can't be beat. They sound JUST like an authentic 1962 Strat. Think of John Frusciante, I could swear they are the same pickups he must have in his Strat.
Cloth covered wires, very well-made. Very simple to wire and install, but what I wasn't expecting was that this thing sounds just like John Frusciante's Strats. It's definetely on the milder side of things, but that is one reason I got it. It's not too trebely like a lot of Fender pickups and despite it's medium output the pickups have great sustain when overdriven. Sounds very sweet, woody, yet crisp and very full.
This price for perfect Strat Tone, excellent value I'd say.

                      fantastic pickup

Comments about Seymour Duncan California 50's Single Coil Set SSL-1:

These pickups give you the traditional sounds that we've come to love from a strat. I always had this strat tone in my head, but I was never able to really achieve it with my strat's stock pickups...that changed when I installed these pickups. They perform equally well with overdrive and the milder side of distortion. If you're not a total vintage guy, the bridge pickup may seem a little on the weak side. I ended up swapping mine out for an ssl-5 and could not be happier. Seymour Duncan allowed me to exchange one of the California 50's pickups for the ssl-5, so it didn't cost me any additional money (other than the cost to ship them the pickup)...I was grateful to S.D. for that. Fantastic pickups and highly recommended.

                      Great Classic Tone

Comments about Seymour Duncan California 50's Single Coil Set SSL-1:

I have been playing guitar for 35 years and I know what I like. I purchased the California 50?s SSL-1?s several weeks ago. These pickups possess all the quack, high-end sparkle, and biting tone found in the early Stratocaster pickups. Having played vintage Strats, I am impressed with how well Seymour Duncan captured the classic tone and vibe. The middle pickup is a Reverse Wound/Reverse Polarity (RW/RP) pickup that will cancel single coil hum in the 2nd and 4th positions of a 5-way Strat selector switch. This is wonderful feature that represents a major improvement over the original 50?s style pickups that were prone to excessive hum and often produced a microphone effect. These pickups compare favorably with the pickups Fender installs in their ?56 reissue. Rock and Roll cut its teeth on the biting tone of vintage a Strat. These pickups can turn a standard sweatshop guitar into a tone monster. They will sound all the better in a high-end instrument.
