OVERVIEW

Humbucking quietude with hot, hard single-coil-style edge.

Created due to popular demand from players, Cool Rails use the same twin-coil design as Duncan's Hot Rails, but are wound to produce a clear, bright, dynamic sound. Hotter and louder than both the Vintage Staggered (SSL-1) Hot Stack (STK-S2) pickups, Cool Rails are for players who need a loud, punchy single coil sound for stage work. Cool Rails are great on their own and also make an excellent match on a guitar with a hot humbucker in the bridge position. Specify black or white, neck or bridge. 4-conductor cable.

FEATURES
  • Twin coil blade design
  • Bucks hum
  • Bright, single-coil sound

I purchased one of these for the neck position of a HSS MexiStrat. The other pickups are a Vintage Rails (mid) and a Pearly Gates (bridge). While I adore the rock tone of the PG and the clean tone of the VR, I have yet to find anything this pickup does well. Played clean, it sounds muffled compared to the Vintage Rails. It's overall tone doesn't emulate single coils as well as the Vintage either. With anywhere from mild to high distortion, it has no low or high end, and really isn't capable of decent rhythm sounds. If you're looking at this, you may wish to check out the Vintage Rails as I found it to be a much more capable pickup. Overall, I'm disappointed with this product.

Comments about Seymour Duncan SCR-1 Cool Rails Pickup:

Seymour Duncan is a true MASTER of guitar pickups. And the SCR-1 Cool Rail pickup that I put in my new Fender Strat only made the guitar sound much better. It was what I was looking for in a neck pickup. Although the Cool Rails can be used for any musical genre, the SCR-1 Cool Rails give my Blues playing an extra edgy sound and yet can wail with a Way Huge Swollen Pickle for distortion. "A+". Thanks, Seymour!

Comments about Seymour Duncan SCR-1 Cool Rails Pickup:

Tried the Lil' 59er in the neck on my American Strat. It had great tones but when I would bend there were some dead spots. Not sure why the poles are so small. The Cool rails took care of all the dead spots. You can bend all day long and no volume drop out! Great tone! It is EQ'd almost flat so where you place it in your guitar will set the tone. It is nice and hot but not too hot like the Hot rail. The hot rail is almost too hot. The Cool rail is perfect because it cleans up crystal clear. Can not go wrong with this p/u. I put bought the hotter bridge and placed it in the neck. Might want to consider it. With the blade design the string spacing won't matter.

I've built and played several custom guitars using Cool Rails, including a baritone with C.R.s loaded at the bridge and neck. These pickups have outstanding tone and range. Highly recommended.

Comments about Seymour Duncan SCR-1 Cool Rails Pickup:

I purchased a Seymour Duncan SCR-1 Cool Rails Pickup to replace the middle pickup in my Fender Stratocaster and I'm glad I did! It has a nice warm sound when played clean, but if you turn up the gain it becomes a roar. I put a Seymour Duncan Lil' Screamin Deamon in the bridge position and buddy, let me tell you, it screams! The two pickups sound excellent on their ownbut when played together, they really complement each other quite nicely. The Seymour Duncan SCR-1 Cool Rails Pickup is perfect for classic rock and metal, but also good for blues and jazz as well. It has a slightly warmer tone than the Lil' Screamin Deamon. At high gain, it screams like a banshee, but cleans up crystal clear. You won't go wrong buying this pickup. Enjoy!

Comments about Seymour Duncan SCR-1 Cool Rails Pickup:

Don't get a single size humbucker. It defeats the purpose of a Strat. Also this pickup just sounds very bad. SD makes so many amazing sounding true single coil pickups to choose from. Don't get this one. If you need a humbucker then mod your guitar and put a proper humbucker in there but don't get this one. My Strat mini is loaded up with SD antiquity pickups: Jaguar neck, surfer strat mid, mustang bridge. They sound amazing. Either get a true single coil pickup or a real humbucker don't get this one.

Comments about Seymour Duncan SCR-1 Cool Rails Pickup:

How do you review a pickup? It is a speclative thing for obvious reasons. I mounted the one I purchased in a 1989 American Standard Strat with an Ash Body. The Cool Rails is a quality pickup with the Humbucker sound but just did not do it for me through my rig. I always try a pickup first through a dry amp to see what the natural characteristics are. If I played only with a Clean sound, I would have left the Coolrail in because it is very warm and sounds amazing. The Overdrive units that I run are the MI Blues and MI Crunch Pedals. With those combo's, it lost alot of color. I did not try it though any other Overdrive because it needed to work with my current setup. I also play a 2003 Gibson ES335 DOT Reissue through my setup with out the same issue of losing color. By color I mean the signal when overdriven became nontransparent. It muddied up a little too much. I really did like the sound clean however and wished that it could have worked for me. I ended up putting the stock pickup back in. It might work well with your rig and how you play and I feel it is worth a shot because the original sound of this pickup sounds great.

Comments about Seymour Duncan SCR-1 Cool Rails Pickup:

I put together a strat with a ss configuration. Bridge and neck pickup only with a LP pickup selector and one volume and one tone knob. I'm impressed with the clean sparkle and and the overdriven sounds as well. Both neck and bridge have great definition. No hum and no mud either. With both neck and bridge engaged I can get and awesome Jazzmaster sound. The pickups don't sound like PAFs nor do they sound like a typical SC. Maybe something in between. My only complaint is that I had to drop the neck pickup pretty low to balance the volume with the bridge. I kept the bridge at 6/64 and neck is like 11/64 or so. I typically just set the lowest output pickup to 6/64 and then balance the other's to that. I find that pickups sound better to me at 6/64 or farther. I just have never had to drop a neck pickup so much lower than the bridge when both pickups are the same model. And yes I did make sure the neck pickup was in the neck and the bridge pickup likewise. I went to the SD site and saw that the outputs of the bridge and neck pickups are pretty similar so that may be why. I think most people go with the hit rails in the bridge for this reason.

Comments about Seymour Duncan SCR-1 Cool Rails Pickup:

I bought this pickup to put in a Bronco Bass as I didn't like the sound it had that much.GOOD CHOICE!!!It turns the B-Bass into a real livewire. The sound is much fatter and cleaner than with it's original alnico pickup. It's the best thing ever for that bass, I promise you. It's easy to install (a slight adjustment if you have the encased Cool Rails as I did) and the sound is just so clean. Polished, bright and heavy, this pickup gives the bass another dimension that bigger basses have. If you are looking for something different to put in a B-Bass - this is it.Very, very cool.

I have a Godin SD guitar (my first electric) that came with stock Godin single-coil pickups in the neck and middle positions. They sound just okay clean, but they are not hum-canceling and even when the middle and neck are put in series do not sound all that great distorted.Once I got this thing set up, my guitar sounded far better than it ever has, and I'm actually using more than just the humbucker in the bridge for once.

I placed this pup on a strat in the middle position and it is my workhorse; it plays like a dream. Of all the humbuckers I have played this one has the best overall sound. The sound is tight and clean; really cuts through everything. In contrasts the Hot Rails really well and mixes very well with all pups, humbucker or songle coil. I personally think it's THE diamond in the rough in pickup land! Highly reccomended!

I played a Strat with a Cool Rail pickup in the bridge extensively...didn't care for it one bit. The tone is very flat...sounds just okay, but not great, when played with distortion. Very muddy though. The clean tones were just god awful. There are definitely better pickups out there, especially for the money.

            Cool Rails Tone

            By Axe1one

            from Phila

Comments about Seymour Duncan SCR-1 Cool Rails Pickup:

'Loud and punchy' is the perfect description. I have Cool Rails in the middle and neck with a L'il 59er SL-59-1b at the bridge. The L'il 59er has that extra bite. The Cool Rails sound a bit flat. No matter how much I crank up the amp's treble, my Cool Rails solos seem lost in the mix. They don't cut through. But the L'il 59er neck pup SL-59-1n has a pole-piece spread that is equal to that of the bridge version - way too wide to align with the strings at the neck, and that's why I went with the Cool Rails.
