OVERVIEW

Warm and smooth with great sustain.

The Seymour Duncan SH-1 '59 Model Electric Guitar Pickup is built with the same kind of enameled wire, nickel-plated studs, and balanced coil windings that humbucker inventor Seth Lover used in his first pickups. It looks and sounds just like a '59.

I have a great custom built G&L double humbucker strat style guitar that I didn't play a whole lot because the bridge pickup was a JB, as with most g&l's. It had this great neck 59 bucker, then everything felt too hot when the bridge was chosen. Now there are those who'll say I'm being less versatile by putting another 59 in it, but the reality is that I play this guitar MORE now than my others. I feel like it is now my dream guitar that I want to grow old with. Switching pups is natural sounding now- not out of place sounding. Nobody comments on the coil splitting. I have the 4 conductor models in neck and bridge. The 59 bridge surpasses the JB by far in the split coil sound. I looked into the "whole lotta hb" and the 59 custom pups but am very happy I ended up with the matched set.

I just want to advise everyone when ordering this item, the name/description is a bit confusing. I think Musician's Friend had already made some changes but I still see a flaw.
I wanted to order a BRIDGE pickup for my Epi LesPaul. This one is listed as SH-1 (neck or bridge).
The manufacturer labels the neck pickup as Sh-1 and the bridge pickup as TB59-1b.
I placed my order as "bridge" in the description here on M'sF. The funny thing is the box actually says SH-1b and the pickup inside was in a NECK pickup. I only realized this after soldering so I guess there goes my chance of returning.
I'm just trying to raise awareness to this issue. SO please make sure you measure the pole spacing before you install the pickup.
Other wise, the shipping was fast and easy.
Cheers guys!

Comments about Seymour Duncan SH-1 1959 Model Electric Guitar Pickup:

I installed this on my 2012 Epiphone Dot and it brought a HUGE improvement in tone. The stock PUs weren't terrible, but the SH-1 has got it all - warmth, enough brightness, sustain, harmonics. The stock PUs in comparison are dull, muddy, lifeless. The SH-1 sounds great clean or overdriven. It also responds well to adjustments in PU height, polepiece height. I couldn't be happier with this purchase. PS. I got the zebra style which looks cool.

Comments about Seymour Duncan SH-1 1959 Model Electric Guitar Pickup:

I put this pickup in the bridge position of my Gibson SG. My God, it turned my guitar from great to superb tone monster. It has such great tone and clarity. No matter if you are playing with distortion or clean it lets each note resonate and ring even when playing chords. The tone is to die for. I put a Pearly Gates in the neck position. I play through a Fender Super Sonic Twin 100 when playing live and a Vox AC 30 at home. It sounds great in both. I play Indie Rock and Classic Rock.

Comments about Seymour Duncan SH-1 1959 Model Electric Guitar Pickup:

I can not say enough good stuff about the SH-1 '59. It turned my bland sounding Epi Les Paul into a tone monster. Korean guitar + american pickup = vintage american tone. It sounds way better than the stock pickups in my Gibsons. Page, Angus, Gibbons, Van Halen, Frampton, Walsh... all the classic rock sounds are here.

This pup in the bridge position (along with a SD vintage mini-hb in the neck position) turned my Epi Alleykat from a good practice guitar into a first class stage performer. Great for Rock and blues. Warm tones and high gain. It starts to snarl early in the volume roll and gets growling by 7. Great tone + quiet performance + easy to install = great value.

Comments about Seymour Duncan SH-1 1959 Model Electric Guitar Pickup:

If you buy this pickup, you need to know how to really play and you need a really good vibe and feel. This pickup hides no mistakes. Also, this is similar to the pickup Van Halen used in '78. Van Halen got his tone because of his attack, before he started using High Gain amps and Hot Pickups. Do if you are buying this to sound like Van Halen, you need a strong attack.

Comments about Seymour Duncan SH-1 1959 Model Electric Guitar Pickup:

I have a korina tele with maple neck and ebony fretboard that I built myself. It has a Joe Barden pickup in the bridge and the SD SH-1 '59 pickup in the neck. My SH-1 is the 4-conductor version, so I have it on a switch that does single-coil mode and out-of-phase mode as well as humbucking mode. This pickup always sounds great--bright, clean, articulate--as good as the Barden, which cost twice as much. This is not a "metal" pickup, and doesn't chug or crunch like some overwound or ceramic pickups, but it does everything else. Chords are so clear and crisp that I've stopped playing my acoustic.

Comments about Seymour Duncan SH-1 1959 Model Electric Guitar Pickup:

Dropped the SH-1 into a mex strat body to replace an SH-5 I'd put in there previously.
I was trying to get as close as I could to my Amercian deluxe fat strat in tone.
The SH-5 was way too ballsy, and is probably a great pick up for hard rock, but I found it difficult to balance it against the vintage noiseless single coils I'd put in.
The SH-1 blends much easier with the noiseless P/ups and sounds close to my deluxe. It's a little more aggressive and trebly than my deluxe fender p/ups, but not crazy.
If you're looking for a solid humbucking sound in a fender guitar - go for it. Price can't be beat for the upgrade in tone.

Comments about Seymour Duncan SH-1 1959 Model Electric Guitar Pickup:

I bought this pickup to put in the neck of my Schecter S-1 as a match for the Pearly Gates humbucker I was getting in the bridge. I bought it on an impulse just figuring it's be a suitable neck pickup up, but WOW was I impressed! Warm, full, and surprisingly hot! I had to actually lower it quite a bit so it wouldn't outdo the Pearly Gates in my bridge! Definitely a pickup to check out for rock, blues, funk, or anything!

Comments about Seymour Duncan SH-1 1959 Model Electric Guitar Pickup:

Iv'e played hundreds of pickups and I always was curious about the SD59B. But to my surprise this is the best humbucker pickup on the planet!! no kidding you have to try it before you judge, unbelievable. harmonics every were, sustains for ever, and the tone sweet and melodic. Add some distortion or crank your amp up and its heaven!!!!it cleans up when you bring the volume halfway. Best pickup period.

Comments about Seymour Duncan SH-1 1959 Model Electric Guitar Pickup:

This is an absolutely incredible pickup that is worth MORE than every penny. I am beyond satisfied with the warm, mellow tone I get in the neck position. Playing mostly finger picking and gentle strumming, I dial the volume and tone down between 2-4 and the smoothest, clearest, silkiest sound oozes from my amp. This is the most professional sounding pickup I have ever played on and would HIGHLY recommend them to anyone. Great work Seymour Duncan!

Guitar is a Schecter C-1 Standard. The literature on the guitar reads that the pick-ups are "Duncan designed HB-102(bridge)/HB-101(neck) humbuckers." I was not happy with the stock neck pick-up. Stock bridge pick-up was fine. Decided to get real Duncan pick-ups (neck and bridge) reference in the literature. Installed myself, it was easy. Huge improvement in tone. Absolutley recommend.

I bought one of these the other day and put it in the neck of my LTD M-100. As usual SD built another quality product. I have an Ibanez V-5 (dual blade/metal style) bucker in the bridge on this guitar and wanted something on the other end of the spectrum to offset the V-5. This did the job and them some. I can actually get piercing pinch harmonics out of the neck pickup, which is unusual for my setup. I wish it had more clear highs like a SH-2 jazz. I think this may get another home in my Flying V and relace it with a jazz.Get one and you won't be disappointed. Don't forget to ground the shielding to eliminate the hum others are talking about.

I got one of these babies in me epi les paul in the bridge and it sounds great. Alot of bass, and smooth mids and also clarity in the highs. It sounds like that slash type sound. And burstbucker sound simular but cost double. Buy these now!

I got a duncan designed invader style pickup for my bday but I was afraid it wasn't versatile enough for me so I got it traded in for the 59' and WOW I was not disapointed! It can play everything from classic rock, country, alternative and its just amazing for metal! And its really chunky (which I love). My guitar is an Ibanez destroyer from about 2003 and its made of basswood and I've never heard any guitar show mine up yet. For whatever style of music you play BUY THIS PICKUP! P.S. I got mine in the bridge position.

This pick up is great, particularly for those that have learned how to control tone through the volume knob. Sweet warm tone out of the box and very responsive to height adjustment and volume adjustments. I play mine on 7 or 8 for rythm, then crank them for lead - works well for me!
Great pick up. Works well with the SH-4 along side it. I have an Epi LP Standard that I loved to play - guitar feels awesome, but with the stock Epi pups it was just not what I was looking for. Sounded like crap at a gig. I also have a Gibson LP, so that didn't help this axe get any play time either. I put the SH-1 and SH-4 in this thing a few weeks ago and it has become my main axe now. I was expecting it to be loud, heavily distoted, and in you rface. What I got was an initial disappointment but once I leearned how to adjust the pick ups and my guitat tone and volume controls (particularly the volume) I was able to attain the exact sound that I was expecting - actually better!. This combination is likely the warmest hot sound that I've ever heard out of a LP - I can only imagine what they would sound like in my Gibson. These things are a great buy.
                        Seymour Duncan - nuff said!
You can easily get less pick up for more from the other guys. The prices is spot on!

Oh my GOD. I got this pickup thinking it'd be a nice change of pace for my Epiphone Les Paul Standard Plus, but it was a BEAUTIFUL change of pace. Like how AC/DC sounds live? Like Jimmy Page's beautiful crunch?? This is tthheeeee pickup you want. I've played many a live show with this pickup, and I just got done performing AC/DC at my talent show. The only downside to this puppy is it hums like hell. Not too bad, but it has a pretty good hum on it. Get it shielded, for sure.

I have a Big Apple Strat. This pickup, along with the Pearly Gates, came with it Stock. I'll have to say I was a DiMarzio Man until I plugged this guitar in for the first time. The '59 is absolutely great for neck pickup soloing with high gain. In fact, when I go for an Yngwie lick I use it full on not split, and I get the noodly type solo tone I have always carved from a neck pickup. Even with high gain this pickup does NOT mush out and you notes come through with clarity and definition. A word to the wise, if you decide to go for a fast picked run your technique had better be up to it as this pickup doesn't hide a thing. I would recommend the '59 for anything from metal to blues. It is a nice compliment to a high output bridge pickup and also will allow you to sustain a note for as long as you plan to. It's no secret that Nuno Bettencourt has used these in the neck of his guitars, along with a Lawrence 500 in the bridge of his signature guitars. Use for any style you play and you won't be dissapointed. Nice bass and mids with a good Vintage vibe on the high end.
