I recently picked up an older made in Taiwan Yamaha pac412 for less than a hundred at a the pawn shop. the hardware was very solid quality the guitar was beautiful. Neck is straight, tuners, frets and bridge all work great and after I set it up the action was spot on, but the pick-ups were weak. I was very happy with it cuz I just wanted a beater that played well enough so that I didn't have to keep getting out the expensive guitar USA made JTV59 when the grand kids are here. Kids can turn an expensive toy into a broken dream in seconds. I have always had a few guitars around, but when I retired and moved into a smaller place I've sold them all or given to the kids except for the JTV. I still have boxes full of pickups and parts so I decided to upgrade the sound on this guitar. At first I just put an old Seymour Duncan 59 in the bridge and it made such a difference that I wanted to get a Lil'59 for the neck and put a JB in the bridge like I used to do with my LP's. I came on musiciansfriend just looking for a push/pull pot and found out I could get the Lil'59 and the JB in white so I called up and asked about it and the sales person was so great he offered me fifteen percent off my whole order for a Black Friday deal even though it was a week before Black Friday, so I ordered both pickups and a few other little things just to take advantage of the fifteen percent deal. The pickup fit perfectly so I wouldn't have to cut the pickguard and the wiring options still let me use the coil splitting. once I got the JB in the bridge and a fender tex-mex in the middle I was set to go, but I never could have imagined how amazing it would sound. The JB blew my mind so warm and still powerful to scream and when mixed with the middle it has this amazing tele kick to it and when I split it, it sounds nice and clean like an expensive strat. With everything I put into this guitar it still cost less than two fifty and a couple ppl at church think I spent well over a grand cuz it now became my choir guitar because its so light and easy to play and sounds beautiful with the Lil'59 and JB. I've been playing everyday again because of this guitar and Lil'59 and the JB cuz when I leave church I can go home and jam out some Priest or Pantera. People if you want a great humbucking pickup for a variety of music get a Seymour Duncan SH-4 JB. You can coil tap so you can take a 5-way selector and turn it into a 9-way selection so you can go from church choir clean to an Iron Maiden scream. and buy at musiciansfriend they really know how to take care of you.

I read that his is the most popular humbucker in the aftermarket world. For the life of me I cannot figure out why. Years ago I started replacing the pickups in my guitars. One of the first I got was the SD JB for its legendary status. It was a improvement over the cheap stock pickup that it replaced. It was very clear and subtly responsive. I was playing it through an all tube Fender combo, a JCM 800 and a Carvin V3 half stack. In all the instances it was cold and harsh, with a brittle high end. I adjusted everything I could and though it improved it was still a very cold brittle sound. I may be crucified for daring to say that the Legendary JB is unpleasantly harsh pickup. I sold it. Then I got another and put it in a Les Paul. Same problem. Cold, harsh a brittle. Some may love this one, I know a lot of pros use it but its just not for me. I think it sounds awful.

Comments about Seymour Duncan SH-4 JB Humbucker Pickup:

For 10+ years, I shrugged off any recommendations people gave me if they so much as hinted at putting a JB in my guitar. Dismissing it for not being superb for metal. Here I am, holding my new Mayones Regius, with the JB/Jazz set.
    Well, where to start...
Spent most of the last decade with a dual EMG 85 set-up, and some various Dimarzio's in Ibanez guitars. Always held the EMG 85 as the pinnacle of high gain WMD's. And while I will not dismiss the 85, the JB holds it down. It floored me, it has that same low mid growl and thump of the EMG 85, but more sparkle in the top end. Where it really steps up, is that it has this wide open midrange with great dynamic response, that really responds to your pick attack in a way the 85 cannot. It simply growls through my Dual Rectifier. The JB has found a place in my rig.

Comments about Seymour Duncan SH-4 JB Humbucker Pickup:

What can I say JB is the king of hard rock, 80's rock, grunge, metal, anything where you need some serious high output, that will kick other pickups tail. I know there's a lot of other active and passive choices out there, but nothing is as good as the JB. Love it way better than Custom 5 and APH-1B. This pickups sounds exactly like 80's rock, metal, heavy sounds, Nivrana, etc., that you are trying to achieve. Its a little trebly, but hey you want that that in a high-output bridge pickup to cut through. I played Led Zeppelin, Nirvana, AC/DC, Judas Priest, etc., all sounds good on this pickup. I started years ago on this pickup, tried many others (including EMG) in between, now I'm back baybe and i'm lovin it. You can try the rest, but then come back to the best, nothing compares.

      SH4 Bridge

Comments about Seymour Duncan SH-4 JB Humbucker Pickup:

Overall I couldn't be more pleased with this pickup. Installation as a snap. Compared to the stock bridge Burst Bucker pickup, which in it's own right, is a decent sounding pickup, the SH4 JB is a superior bridge pickup for rock and modern hi gain tones. I use a marshall as my main rig, but also have a Goldtone GA30RS and a Deville 4x10. The SH4 JB definitely does not get away from that traditional les paul sound, just gives you more of it. Comparing the SH4 JB to the 498T in my other LP Standard, the JB does have noticably more bite, clarity and output.
Easy to instsall, the Duncan site has all the necessary diagrams as well as includes them in the packaging and the build quality is excellent. Duncan really does take this to another level than the major makers like Fender/Gibson, etc)
Compared to the cost of USA Gibson pickups, the Duncan SH4 is a great buy. I bought a SH4 (and an SH1) to replace the pickups in a 2002 LP Standard with the original Burst Buckers. The only other pickup I would have opted for from Gibson was the more expensive 498T, which are good, but I already have a set of 498s in another Les Paul,

Guitar is a Schecter C-1 Standard. The literature on the guitar reads that the pick-ups are "Duncan designed HB-102(bridge)/HB-101(neck) humbuckers." I was not happy with the stock neck pick-up. Stock bridge pick-up was fine. Decided to get real Duncan pick-ups (neck and bridge) reference in the literature. Installed myself, it was easy. Huge improvement in tone. Absolutley recommend.

Comments about Seymour Duncan SH-4 JB Humbucker Pickup:

I've been playing since early/mid 80's. Been doing pup swaps the past 20+ years. I stuck with Dimarzio for quite some time, cause my hero's..Gilbert, Vai, Timmons, Satch, Petrucci etc etc all used them.. They got a huge push in the later 80's thanks to those guys among many more. However, that being said, a few years ago I tried Seymour. My first set was the JB and the Jazz set up. Never went back to Dimarzio, matter of fact took some out and replaced w/ Seymours. You can't go wrong w/ the pup in the bridge for just about any style or genre. It is probably the most versatile pup out there. I play everything from classical, jazz, blues, rock, metal. this covers it all. Not muddy at all, clean or heavy distortion. Highly recommend this pup for any type of guitar. I have one in an LP, one in a RG, and one in a guitar I built. Doesn't matter this is an amazing pup.

I installed these in my Michael Kelly Patriot, and oh boy, this pickup is AWESOME. I already had some pretty fat tone, but I wasnt getting the distortion, or the mids that I needed from my PAF's. I put this guy in the bridge and I have fallen in love with my guitar AGAIN. Great pickup.

Comments about Seymour Duncan SH-4 JB Humbucker Pickup:

Scored a Schecter Artist III with these pups in it. Already have a Schecter Hellraiser Deluxe with active EMG 81-85's, and a Fender Super Tele. So these are really a great contrast. They sustain for DAAAYS, and have a great warm tone that really drives. High strings sing with chording. Only critique would be a slight lack in "snappy" low string juggles to single string triplety riffs in the high frequencies - and they look a tad cheap - but, the overall bar chords more than make up for that. Very vintage and doomy in sound. The balance in mids is rediculous - and I am not a mids guy. In the neck position the "butter" is also very clear in nature, and just when you thought the warmth was good enough you switched to the neck pickup for great runs that don't require a palm mute to kill the bleed. I play drop C which matters for this review. Came pretty low, but I found the sweet spot as far as height. First Seymour's I've played, and now am really curious about this brand...

This went in my Double Fat Strat replacing a Pearly Gates. It took some coaxing from a friend but I'm glad that I made the switch. I like the Pearly Gates a lot but, it's more on the bluesy side. The JB hits those '80's hard rock tones with ease. Hey if it's good enough for Satchel from Steel Panther then it's good enough for me!

Comments about Seymour Duncan SH-4 JB Humbucker Pickup:

I've tried various bridge pickups in order to get that perfect heavy sound for rock. I've tried everything from EMGs to Dimarzios to other Seymour Duncans. This is so far the clearest and punchiest bridge pickup I've tried. Just sounds perfect. Also has a surprisingly good clean sound, for a humbucker. Note that I have the model with the nickel cover. I do believe that affects the tone to some amount.

Comments about Seymour Duncan SH-4 JB Humbucker Pickup:

This is a very nice pickup for a variety of music, to include pop, rock (think ZZ Top, Journey, and older Aerosmith), jazz, even some gritty country. You get a LOT of of highs and mids out of this thing, helping you cut through the mix at any gig. Harmonics leap off the fretboard, and this is a wonderful pup for playing clean (very sparkly clean tone). The problem is, all the music I listed above is only half of what I play. I do alot of heavy rock and metal, and this pup is only barely able to achieve anything close to the tone I want for that kind of music. You HAVE to have the absolute right effects and amp to do it, and even then, you will be pushing your effects to the max to get a decent metal tone. I noted that even after achieving this I had to jack up the low EQ on my effects, because pushing gain into this thing makes the already powerful highs and mids seem overbearing. This left me with something of a muddy tone in the lower strings, and not the tight low-end chug-chug I like in a high gain pup. This pup is in my Jackson DK2M Dinky (along with a SH-2N jazz in the neck), and I'm going to replace it with a Seymour Duncan SH-6 Distortion, keeping the jazz in the neck for some tonal variety.

JB Great for Metal in my humble opinion

Comments about Seymour Duncan SH-4 JB Humbucker Pickup:

This pickup is not extremely articulate and scooped out, so if that's what you want, then try the Sh-6, but if you need a vocal mid hump and an otherwise more balanced response, this pickup will do wonders for your solos AND metal rhythms.
The 4-conductor wiring is a pretty standard feature, but is also a very nice feature to have.
The Sh-4 replaced an Sh-6 in my RG. What I didn't like about the Sh-6 is that it was especially articulate... almost harsh on the top end and the smoothness I generally need out of a bridge pickup for solos just wasn't there. The JB has much more of a vocal quality, but needs some very careful height adjustments to get the best sound. Contrary to popular opinion, I find that the JB is perfect for metal and nabs artificial harmonics with ease. I get plenty of tight low end chug and the highs are shimmering without being harsh or overbearring. In my overall opinion, this pickup is much more versatile a pickup than the Sh-6.
It's a standard price, but it does seem a little high for such a popular product.

Comments about Seymour Duncan SH-4 JB Humbucker Pickup:

I bought an epiphone les paul standard, and liked the guitar, but the bridge pickup wasnt bright enough, it was good but just didnt have the striking, juicy, saturated tone, that i was looking for. i bought this little bad boy, and man, it sings. the mid range is hot and juicy and very vocal. the tonality is very slash-esque, bluesy, hot and expressive. roll back the volume and little settle down and add a little verb and delay and the pick up takes on a whole new dimension.

Also i played in a little deathcore band for a little while, when i scooped out the mids and took the gain up, it managed to stay very articulate, while still aggressive and thrashy.

Incredible pick-up, smooth, aggressive, articulate, and sexy. definately a great pickup that i would reccommend for any genre that likes a dynamic responsive pickup.

Comments about Seymour Duncan SH-4 JB Humbucker Pickup:

This pickup was a great addition to my line up. I have it in an Epi les paul and am very happy with the sound. Its more defined than some of the other duncans and dimarzios I use in my instruments. It does have a tendency to get a bit flabby if the gain is turned up too high on my JCM 800, but thats pretty easy to compensate for. It is warmer than most of my other pickups and the harmonics just jump out effortlessly.Very articulate sounding pickup giving each note a defined sound. It doesn't have that high gain push that you get from a dimarzio SD so I would'nt depend on this pickup to do heavy metal. But for that classic rock crunch, this is the one. Easy to see why its such a standard as a replacement unit.I'm playing it straight thru the JCM without any pedals at all. I just love the pure tone of this pickup on its own. I knocked off half a point because of the breakup at higher gain but wouldn't hesitate to recommend this as a classic rock type pickup. For metal, I'd go with something higher gain. For that classic les paul sound, this is the one.

The PU in humbucking, esp if you want choices when you're actuallly playing ... this will do it all .. someone mentioned a viocal quality .. very true with the right setup
Works great rolled off, cranked and 'pedal enhanced' ... I use these in Strats/bridge and esp split for pos 2, its the most versatile of any SD ...
Never had an issue with the many SD's I've ourchsed
                      Price is competitive ...

The title says it all. The pickup isn't bad - but there is better. Let's face it - the JB is the standard in replacement pickups. However, it seems to have a mid range quack to it and can get lost in a mix. I have several guitars and have played in club bands for nearly 20 years. I prefer the Tone Zone and Super Distortion - what else can I say?

Fuzzy! Brittle! Harsh! These are the words I use to describe the SD JB. I have tried so hard to like Duncans.....but I don't. I think they sound good when others play them but not when I do. I personally like Dimarzios. I get compliments every gig I play about my (Dimarzio) guitar tone.

What can you say about the JB that hasn't been said? I've played guitar for years but never ran into a JB until recently. I was missing out! This thing sounds amazing, and it's so versatile. It does beautiful warm clean tones with clarity on the top end. And it does heavy distorted rock and roll and metal too. Un-believable. This is the best all around pick up I've ever heard. It does push your amp into over drive, but it's not too powerful. The power is completly controlable. I guess that's why it's the Jeff Beck Model, because it really does it all! The overdrive tone can be bright and searing, or dark and moody. The cleans can be bright and snappy, or warm and silky. It does Van Halen, Metallica, and Clapton, and Page also. Amazing! If you don't have one your're missing out. Don't be like me and wait so long for one of the best pick ups ever created. Buy it!!! This is the sound on so many classic records you can't count them on all your digits. This is the pick up that started a revolution, and helped to usher in what we know know as the sound of the modern rock guitar. This pick up and the Dimarzio Super Distortion are hallmarks of rock and roll. Don't miss out!
