My favorite pickup

By 300380605

from montreal

Comments about Seymour Duncan SH-6 Distortion Humbucker Pickup:

like i said it answer all my need and my expectation of a pickup . way better than the stock Diamondback humbucker of the HSS strat and better for rythm heavy stuff than the Alnico type v ( 8.9 dc resistance ) of my agile 3200 ( nice pickup but not for metal ) .

its my answer to all my need as a bridge pickup . give me high ouput while retianing clarity or being muddy .
if you read this you are probably searching for the right pickup .if your like me your looking for the right humbucker . i have this humbucker in both of my guitar .. a Strat HSS and a Agile 3200 ( les paul copy )

duncan sh-4 / dimarzio superdistortion ?? they are wonderful for classic rock , the are "icon" of the genre ..but they reach the metal heavyly and are more vintage pickup for the KISS / van halen sound .

duncan sh-8 invader or dimarzio super 3 .????. they are speciality pickup .. the invader feedback is easy to get out of control and the super 3 wont sound good in les paul .. its design more for strats , and those are high ouput mayhem humbucker . they are darker and turn your axe into brutal machine and forget versatility or clean

but what about thrash metal , nu-metal , punk rock .. i want that chunky palmuting to play megadeth holywars / metallica -creeping death .. but at the same time , i want to roll back and handle Acdc , van halen , kiss .

IMO the Duncan sh-6 is the perfect "inbetween" the brutal dimebucker , invader , super 3 and all those " out of control gain freak pickup" and the classic hot rod humbucker like Dimarzio super distortion and jeff beck sh-4 whom you would like mor eof it for metal .

this thing has high ouput , but clarity and its not dark like my invader .. it doesnt feedback like crazy or get out of control . you want a pick up that handle metal , punk rock and other high gain stuff and also classic rock .. but you dont want your guitar to overwhelm on your amp . the sh-6 is the perfect do-it-all metal/hard rock etc.. humbucker . its high ouput .. handle thrash metal , punk rock and also good for drop tuning while staying "forgiven" to your amp . its not dark at all .. great high output and c-l-a-r-i-t-y . the most balanced humbucker i heard . only downside .. the pinch harmonic are "good" but will never be the same as a emg 81 active or an invader . they still scream but never as much as active pickup like an emg 81 . but thats to expect . but rest assure that it will sound if you throw the right amount of gain in your amp .

This pick up let your amp speak for itself ( the foundation of sound really start from the amp ) so the duncan will respond to what your throw at him . so if you expect to bring your vox ac30 into metal territory with a humbucker .. thats not it . use a metal/rock amp and the sh-6 will make it scream .

your guitar will become a good do it all hard rock , thrash metal, punk rock etc.. with the right eq of your amp . thats what you want from a pickup if your want that kind of versatility . the rythm palmuting is outstanding .i play metallica early stuff also punk rock like nofx ( those 16x powerchord ) and it sound great .
The quality of this pickup is fantastic . its seymour duncan .. what do you expect?
great quality at reasonable price . without going "boutique " and paying a lot for a pick up .

Comments about Seymour Duncan SH-6 Distortion Humbucker Pickup:

This pickup is far more versatile than its description and other users suggest. I hate how the Duncan Distortion is pigeon-holed as a "metal only" pickup. Not true!! Yes, it has power and drives an amp fairly hard, but it is well suited to any genre of music you'd like to venture. It is the most midrangey pickup you will find, and very trebly as well; but it is this eq that gives it it's clarity (no matter how much gain you use) and allows you to cut through the mix, live or in the studio. I play mainly hard rock, old school metal, and shred (think Satch, George Lynch, and Hendrix-y stuff) and I love the Duncan Distortion! It obeys my every command. Very touch sensitive, harmonic and high-fidelity. It also cleans up better than you think. I go from clean, to crunch, all the up to shred caliber gain just by using my guitar's volume knob.

Comments about Seymour Duncan SH-6 Distortion Humbucker Pickup:

I bought the "Distortion Mayhem" set hoping that they would warm up a Schecter Tempest. I later sold that guitar and have been itching for that tone ever since. I got much more than I bargained for.

I own much more expensive Gibsons now, but I am sure that I will put these into another guitar again someday soon as I really miss the tone.

They are warm and punchy while maintaining excellent note separation. I have used several of Seymour's pickups: JB's, '59's, Jazz, Seth Lover's, A2P's, Slash A2P's - they are all good. As my brother once told me, and he is a much better guitarist than me, "You may not get a perfect Duncan pickup for what you want, but you'll never get a bad one." I agree, and the SH-6 is my favorite Duncan.

This turned my underpowered PRS SE 245 bridge p/u from a Ford to a Ferrari. It really added a lot of power for Rock and Metal. It really works well combined with the stock neck 245 pick up. It gave it a whole new dimension together that never existed. If you get it installed, spend the extra and add an orange drop capacitor, it adds added tone and is highley recommended by seymour duncan sites as well. Love this p/u!

The Duncan Distortion is a fantastic pickup that will give you power, clarity, and tone that will make you not want to put your guitar down. It has a tight low end, searing highs, and a midrange bite that will cut through any mix, live or in the studio. I have it in a Gibson Flying V and it sounds killer, and ... It cleans up amazingly ... I mean from sparkling clean, to crunch, and all the way up to shred caliber soloing; all just by using my guitar's volume knob! I love the Duncan Distortion!

Bought this pickup 2 weeks ago, used it as the bridge pickup on my re-painted Jackson guitar. I describe this pickup as "very muscular", it has the power, sustain, and clarity, the distortion/overdrive came out very smoothly, very good for hardrock/blues rock. Here's a link for you who are wondering how it might sound like:

Comments about Seymour Duncan SH-6 Distortion Humbucker Pickup:

Picked this p/u to use in my Epi LP for heavier sounds and drop tunings. Although the SH-6 definitely delivers what I was searching for, it can be a little too much at times. The biggest con is having the volume knob rolled to 10 on a clean channel and overdriving the amp!! It will clean up however by rolling the volume knob back.....but then you will lose possibly needed volume.

Great for deep, chunky, crunchy metal but that's (in my opinion) all its good for. Originally, I had changed the stock Epi p/u with an SH-4 which now resides in my HSS Strat. Once I get around to ordering one, another SH-4 it will be. They're my favorite.

All in all, the SH-6 is a good p/u that will satisfy your metal needs. If you're like me and don't like active pickups, give this one a try or the Invader. Seymour-Duncan makes great products so whatever your taste is, be confident in buying any SD pickup.

Comments about Seymour Duncan SH-6 Distortion Humbucker Pickup:

I've tried many pickups like Gibson, Dimarzio, Duncan etc... and this one has never let me down. It's loud, aggressive, crunchy yet articulate. For a high output pickup it is well balanced EQ wise. The lows stay tight even when you tune down and the top end remains nice clarity for open chords. I have this pickup in my Les Paul and my rosewood neck strat which shows how versatile it is. The SH-6 isn't too picky on what you put it in.

Dropped one of these in a middle-price range Laguna. It has a nice high output, and good range if set up right. Crunchy enoungh for metal and tight enough for classic rock. I like it.

I used to use SH-5 on stage with all my guitars but my leads were missing just a little. So I put the SH-6 in all my stage guitars and they worked really well. I had all kinds of compliments (by several professional guitar players) with my sound on stage the first time I used them. They said my sounds was very smooth and creamy. I still use the SH-5s with my practice guitars and recordings.

These are some great pickups for clean to heavy punk. I would not recommend these for metal, they would do fine for metal but there are better pickups for metal. All around these pickups are great pickups for a wide variety of music. I use mine for rock and pop punk.

I was rather surprised to find that this pickup, which is rated as a high output unit, actually has tons of tone, and doesn't just sound like metal. I'd say this is close to the most flexible pup in Seymour's line. Very happy with this.

Comments about Seymour Duncan SH-6 Distortion Humbucker Pickup:

It's a great sounding pickup and good for the money!!
Depending on what guitar you put it in....you will probably love it. I play in a deathcore/grind type of band and this pickup rips!! I'm in B,F#,B,E,G#,C#. I had an Invader in it before which is a powerful
pickup for sure but a bit darker than I would like. The low end could get crazy and I had to dial it back.
If your guitar is a lighter wood type or you feel that it is lacking in lows, try the Invader! The Invader like any other pickup, needs the right guitar to really sing.

I use a Krank Krankenstein and a 1983 Gibson Corvus. I like different you could say! The stock pickups were terrible.

The SH6 is a bit brighter and seems to have better clarity as well. It is not as wild as the Invader in the output department but don't let that stop you. It has plenty of crunch and heat!! It chugs with authority and for my limited clean passages, it handles that pretty decent too..

I used to be an EMG 81 guy but anymore...I find them sterile and lacking in tonal character. I prefer the SH-6. It cops a nice ealry '90's Cannibal Corpse tone!
It's Seymour Duncan...that alone speaks enough of it's quality.
Pretty good! You could spend more and sound worse!!

Comments about Seymour Duncan SH-6 Distortion Humbucker Pickup:

Wow, This pick-up is everything it is said to be and more. To begin with my 70's Ibanez strat copy was outfitted with 2 seymour Hot Stack strat pick-ups with
pearly gates in the bridge position, I loved the quietness of the hot stacks and they performed as advertised. It was the pearly gates in the bride position that I was not satified with, too much treble. I had a lutheir route out my neck position slot and install the pearly gates in the neck position and ordered a seymour distortion humbucking pick-up and put it in the treble position. My strat copy had more single coil quack in the out of phase position than it had with the hot stack strat pickups and more quack with the distortion pick-up in the bridge position. When switched to full humbucker in the bridge position, the distortion is so much better and smoother than the pearly gates was in the bridge position. The treble is not overwhelming. For Strat players who really want a more versatile set-up with any kind of music try this set-up: Pearly Gates in neck position, Hot Stack Strat in middle and Distortion in bridge position. You will be amazed at how versatile your strat will become and have more bite and quack at the same time.

Comments about Seymour Duncan SH-6 Distortion Humbucker Pickup:

So after having one of these in my main Strat for a year paired with a '59 in the neck I feel I can make a fair assessment. This thing is LOUD and it is named aptly. I figured it was going to be good with gain but it blew me out of the water. The distortion, not surprisingly, shines when it's played with any amount of gain, in my opinion, anyway. I'm not a guitar wizard or anything but it is surprisingly versatile. I like to play a good variety of music but my favorites are definitely anything 70's (disco, soul, classic rock, reggae, etc.) This pickup can do it, IF you know how to use it. I will admit, the cleans can be harsh when the pickup is at full volume but depending on your attack you can make it shimmer. I also have it coil tapped and can get a nice amount of different tones. Now I will say this pickup is probably not for everyone, because it's primarily made for more aggressive styles and high gain settings, but it can nail alot of classic rock and old school tones at the same time. I wouldn't say it's the best PU for metal, but it does very, very well. Overall, I love it and if anything happened I'd probably replace it or just get another Seymour Duncan. Very, very good pickup for the price.

Let me first say i was sceptical on this pickup. my bridge pickup was goin out on me and i had gigs comin up and couldnt afford the actives. i wasnt buying it because it was passive. but i had no other option. so i threw it in the bridge. i Was so amazed my the punchy low end of this pickup! the clarity when its distorted is out of this world. its also is a little hot on a clean channel. but a roll of the volume knob fixed that. i went to practice and i lit my drummer up with this thing in the bridge. this pickup has completed the overall tone of my rig that i wanted. if your lookin for a hot pickup that is just brutal and beast and you dont like actives. this is the pickup my friends. i will no longer play actives again.

The Ultimate Rock, Hard Rock, or Metal Pickup

Comments about Seymour Duncan SH-6 Distortion Humbucker Pickup:

This is without a doubt my favorite pickup available. I originally heard about it from George Lynch back in '85. He was a good friend of my guitar teacher when I was 15 and just starting out, and I asked him what pickup he was using on "Under Lock And Key" (the tone he got on that album was spectacular) and he told me it was a Duncan Distortion. I had been using JB's and I switched right away, and I was floored!!!! Since then I have tried a ton of different pickups, and nothing comes close. It sounds great for 80's style hard rock/metal (Lynch, DeMartini, Maiden, Megadeth) due to it's high quality gain structure, sustain, senstivity to pick harmonics, and cool growl! If you like guitar tone with gain, sustain, and tone, this is it in spades!

Comments about Seymour Duncan SH-6 Distortion Humbucker Pickup:

I have an SH-6 Seymour Duncan Distortion in the bridge position. This pickup is Hot! It has a 16.6k DC Resistance, with a large ceramic magnet! It delivers every bit of that "MICK MARS-Motley Crue" tone and sustain. Pinch Harmonics are very defined and tapping is enhanced greatly with this pickup. Solos are unbeatable. In my opinion, it beats the EMG-H4 (that I have in the neck position) hands down. This pickup is also great for those who are in search of the RANDY RHOADS and EVH tones. It is a very versitile pickup, when it comes to 80's Rock and Metal. But it is NOT ment for those in search of the Slayer or Dimebag tones. Overall, this is simply one of the best passive pickups you can buy. A+

Comments about Seymour Duncan SH-6 Distortion Humbucker Pickup:

I've had mine for almost 20 years, it's been in an 82 Les Paul Custom, 2004 MIM Strat, Kramer Baretta, and a custom made super-strat. I keep coming back to this pickup because it really has a distinctive voice compared to other high output pickups.

There is something very aggressive in the upper mids that just wants to tear your face off (in a musical way). Listen to George Lynch's tone on Back for the Attack. That's the tone of this pickup.

In a world of ultra-bassy, flubby, undefined pickups and music, this is like a surgeon's scalpel: razor sharp, aggressive, and with that signature Duncan voicing. My favorite thing about this pickup is the way chords that are left to ring out will pick up a certain dry 'snarl' - it just sounds so mean. It has a very strong high end that lets harmonics really scream.

I guess if it had a downside, to me, no matter the guitar I had it in, it always begged to sound 'mean'. I wouldn't call it a smooth pickup. But to me that is what makes it so cool
