The Shadow pick up is and excellent investment. I am a viola player and have only previously worked with the scratchy piezo pick ups that attach to the bridge and produce a ugliest, gritty and scratchy sound.The Shadow picks up the natural resonance of the instruments especially the warm tone of the viola and simple to install with no alterations to your insturment! It attaches like a chin rest and if you have a full sized viola, you may need to screw on some extenders. When I use the pick up, I take off my chinrest so there isn't too much weight on the body that would mute the sound. The pick ups rest between the body and bridge and you simply plug it in when you want use it. When installing, make sure it is aligned properly with the sound peg to get the best possible amplification.

The Shadow model no. SH945NFX violin pickup is truly outstanding for sound & ease of installing. I had purchased the disk type pickup adhesively applied to the violin top, & also later bought the metal vee type inserted in the side of the bridge, attached to a carpenter's jack, along with getting the pickup manufacturer's recommended pre-amp for same, both of which had a definite "tin can" sound. Last night the band thought I had bought a very expensive violin when they heard the Shadow SH945NFX pickup -- volume control & bass.trebel control at one's fingertips. The pick up fits under the bridge & picks up both string sounds and vibrations from violin top -- no "tin can" sound at all -- violin sounds better amplified with this pickup than without the pickup.

I I did a ton of research, and there are at least 20 different ways to go for acoustic violin pickups. I settled on the shadow and do not regret my decision. I think it captures the warmth of my instrument well. I find that I have to dial the tone on the pickup down a lot in order to reduce some harshness. I would also highly recommend picking up some sort of graphic equalizer if your amp doesn't have something like this built in. I got the DanElectro Fish n' Chips and I've found that it is extremely helpful in shaping the sound that I want.

I received the violin pickup by SHADOW today andWOW! was I ever surprized at the sweet sound,I would Highly Recomend this pickup to anyone.Thereis no hum or anything it's a wonderful pickup system.
