OVERVIEW

No instrument modification needed!

The Shadow Nanoflex Violin/Viola Pickup System is built to authentically reproduce the vibrations of your violin or viola with every move of the bow in all positions.

The Nanoflex pickup not only takes the vibrations of the strings like common undersaddle pickups, it senses the vibrations of the strings and the body of the instrument simultaneously. Due to active amplification directly at the pickup and 100% shielding of the entire system, no sound will be lost and no hum created.

Shadow felt that because of the beautiful design and incredible frequency response in violins and violas that no instrument modification was a must in developing this pickup system.

The Shadow violin pickup mounts easily under the bridge and senses the vibrations of the bridge and the body. The control unit with volume and tone knobs mounts on violin side with chin rest type assembly. The control unit has an input for the pickup and a standard 1/4" jack output, 3V cell battery (2032). Battery life averages 1 year.

Comments about Shadow Nanoflex Violin/Viola Pickup System:

The clarity of sound if phenomenal when piped through a direct box or Fishman acoustic amp with one exception. It picks up a thump every time the finger goes to the string, a noise every time the finger is lifted and a percussive noise with each attack of the bow. We've tried several things to make this lesson or go away without luck. We've put in a technical inquiry to the manufacturer and are waiting for an answer. This is bad enough that if we can't resolve it we will need to return it. Otherwise, have not had it long enough to comment on quality, etc.

Comments about Shadow Nanoflex Violin/Viola Pickup System:

Vast improvement over the stick-on Dean Markley unit we used to use. Actually works as advertised.

With a viola, there is not enough tonal adjustment. It does require a far amount EQ tweaking.

I don't want to say it's flat sounding, and it sure isn't muddy. Maybe dim is the right term, because it needs a little more brightness that cannot be achieved with just the tone an volume knobs.

We really liked being able to hook it up to a looper and in combo with a Danelectro D-2 FAB Overdrive. Sure, it's not terribly aggressive, but it sounds cool.

      The Shadow Pick up

      By ennisarlyn

      from Baltimore

Comments about Shadow Nanoflex Violin/Viola Pickup System:

The Shadow pick up is and excellent investment. I am a viola player and have only previously worked with the scratchy piezo pick ups that attach to the bridge and produce a ugliest, gritty and scratchy sound. The Shadow picks up the natural resonance of the instruments especially the warm tone of the viola and simple to install with no alterations to your insturment! It attaches like a chin rest and if you have a full sized viola, you may need to screw on some extenders. When I use the pick up, I take off my chinrest so there isn't too much weight on the body that would mute the sound. The pick ups rest between the body and bridge and you simply plug it in when you want use it. When installing, make sure it is aligned properly with the sound peg to get the best possible amplification.

      Shadow Nanoflex Violin Pickup

      By Henry-5LG9O

      from Louisiana

Comments about Shadow Nanoflex Violin/Viola Pickup System:

The Shadow model no. SH945NFX violin pickup is truly outstanding for sound & ease of installing. I had purchased the disk type pickup adhesively applied to the violin top, & also later bought the metal vee type inserted in the side of the bridge, attached to a carpenter's jack, along with getting the pickup manufacturer's recommended pre-amp for same, both of which had a definite "tin can" sound. Last night the band thought I had bought a very expensive violin when they heard the Shadow SH945NFX pickup -- volume control & bass.trebel control at one's fingertips. The pick up fits under the bridge & picks up both string sounds and vibrations from violin top -- no "tin can" sound at all -- violin sounds better amplified with this pickup than without the pickup.

Great sounding and attractive, tricky installation

      By Ethan-QjSnC

      from Ithaca, NY

Comments about Shadow Nanoflex Violin/Viola Pickup System:

I I did a ton of research, and there are at least 20 different ways to go for acoustic violin pickups. I settled on the shadow and do not regret my decision. I think it captures the warmth of my instrument well. I find that I have to dial the tone on the pickup down a lot in order to reduce some harshness. I would also highly recommend picking up some sort of graphic equalizer if your amp doesn't have something like this built in. I got the DanElectro Fish n' Chips and I've found that it is extremely helpful in shaping the sound that I want.
