Great unit, somewhat challenging installation

By Albert Pinkerton III

from Undisclosed

Comments about SKB Gig Wing for Gig Rig:

I ordered this item a week before a gig, and it was backordered, it arrived the morning I was paking up, so I was a little rushed to do the install. the installation instructions asked me to drill two 7/16 holes, but the problem was that I only had a 3/8" bit, and a 1/2" bit. I have a feeling that my dilemma isn't uncommon, as the range of bit sizes diminishes as the sizes go up. I had to drill the 3/8" hole and file it to the larger size. Once I had the hole, the challenge was getting the jack nut to hold still while you turn the screw to tighten it into place. I used a pair of vice grips to hang on to the jack nut while I turned the tightening screw. Of the two jack nuts, I ended up with a perfect install and a mangled install. The other challenge is that I have a first generation gig rig, so the drilling template they include doesn't apply. The installation is still possible, and the GigWing works perfectly, but you need to carefully eyeball the location of the holes so that the GigWing support arm lines up properly with the gig rig handles.

All things considered, it's great, and exactly what I was looking for. The installation could have been easier, but that's a one time issue rather than an ongoing issue.

Mounting hardware could be improved

Comments about SKB Gig Wing for Gig Rig:

The jack nut installation instructs you to hold the jack nut with pliers when you tighten the screw to collape the jack nut. It would work much better if the shoulder on the nut was:1. Square or had two flat sides2. If the nut wasn't covered with plastic, which allows rhe nut to slip and and the plastic to ultimately come off.

Comments about SKB Gig Wing for Gig Rig:

As a musician and working mobile DJ it is difficult to find room for table-space. You also need to consider weight, appearance and space consumption. This product is amazingly simple yet sturdy and light weight. SKB continues to make great equipment with awesome customer service from the manufacturer.
