I'm quite pleased with this case. It fits my Fender Jazz and Jaguar bass like a glove and protects them well.
This case is not as bulky as the rectangular cases. It has easy to open and close latches plus an area to store accessories.
Well made and has a lifetime warranty.
Rather expensive case. The only thing I can suggest is to buy it when Musicians Friend has a sale.

I was attracted to this specific case because the form fitting shape means it takes up less space and is a bit lighter. Also, I needed a case with a TSA approved lock (which this product listing fails to even mention it has, but you can vaguely make it out in the product photos).

I had read the other reviews here and everyone seemed pretty happy with the case, save for two souls who complained of a shotty handle which happened to break on them. I figured that these occurrences where merely incidental and that the odds of a well regarded company like SKB continuing to sell a product that was defective were few. However DOT DOT DOT, when I took the case out of the box it was shipped in, the handle was broken. For a case this expensive, I would expect that the handle would be much more durable than it is. There's really nothing to it. The part of the handle that fits into the bracket simply broke in half, and it's plastic, so it's unrepairable.

Especially surprising is that this case was made so that it could be brought on airplanes and, presumably, tossed about like all the other luggage. This may be why the fact that it has a TSA approved lock is not mentioned, because the case really couldn't handle something like that, and SKB knows it.

I'm just glad it broke while it was being shipped, and not on my flight to Paris this summer, so I don't have to carry it under my arm, along with my luggage, like a jerk for ten days.
I'm guessing this issue went the way of the Ford Pinto in the SKB board room and it would have simply cost more to clean up this mess than the cost of any fallout from having a defective product on the market.

in light of recent events, i really owe it to skb to share my recent experience with you all... sometime after the handle broke (and when i had a couple weeks downtime between gigs), i thought it'd be worth a shot to try out the "lifetime warranty", and contacted skb with my case and its issue. i emailed them, describing the broken handle, and they quickly responded to me an return authorization. i then sent the case back to them with a copy of the receipt (just print it from your musicians friend order history), and voila! about a week or so later, a brand new case arrived with what looks to be a sturdier handle! thanks skb, you just got a customer for life!

Comments about SKB-FB4 Molded Bass Case:

As I write this review I am seriously considering sending back my 2nd case. The first came with a bent clasp that wouldn't lock down and the bottom of the case had a gap of at least a quarter of an inch so it wouldn't protect a guitar from so much as a light rain. I assumed the case had been damaged in shipping so I went through the process of getting it exchanged only to find that the replacement had the same problem of not sealing shut properly. The clasp wasn't broken this time and the gap at the bottom is much smaller, around an eighth of an inch, but it would still allow water into the case if you had to walk it through the rain. Other than that the case is quite nice and, like all SKB products, looks like you could park a Volvo on it with no ill effects. The padding and interior is soft and plush and the locks are of high quality, not like the universal ones found on most cases. Unfortunately and like a lot of fitted or semi-fitted cases there is not much room inside for a strap or other gear in the under-the-neck compartment so if you have a wide, thick strap, like the Levys Glove Leather 3.5" that I have on the guitar this case was bought for, then you won't be able to completely close the compartment lid unless the guitar is in the case. This means if you pick it up sans guitar then all your stuff like picks, adjustment hex keys, spare batteries and such will spill out and roam around inside the case. Last but not least this this was supposed to be a "universal" case but it most certainly is not. It is designed for either a Fender J or P bass so the Yamaha TRBX-304 I bought it for slides around in it unless you roll up a hand towel (or the shipping sleeve it came in) and place it in the bottom as the Yamaha has a more petite body than a Fender P/J by about 2" or so. In conclusion I just don't think this case is up to the standards of a professional case, especially for its somewhat hefty price tag so if you are looking for a serious case to travel with then you should look elsewhere.

i had really high hopes for this case and wish it would have worked out better. i adore the form fit as it allows me to get in and out of midsize car truck where a rectangular case just doesn't fit. HOWEVER, for the price, i frankly expected better. it's actually a good case, but with a VERY BAD HANDLE. after a year or so, the handle broke and came off at a gig, right at the point of loading it onto a stage, sending my bass and case crashing 5 feet or so to the floor (and leaving me still pathetically clutching a handle to the amusement of my bandmates). that being said, the case did its job; the case body and bass were both fine... it still works now although i've fashioned a rope handle or carry it under my arm [meaning, one more trip to the equipment trailer]. bottom line, another case is next piece of equipment i need to get, which sucks... cases (and their handle) should last much longer; especially skb cases for more than a hundred.

I purchased this case for use with my Fender Aerodyne Jazz Bass. When my shipment arrived there was no damage to any of the packaging, but when I opened it up the handle had snapped off at one hinge. I contacted SKB customer service and they said they'd ship a new handle to me at no charge. After a week the new handle arrived, but I couldn't get the case liner out to change it. I contacted customer service again and she said she had misread the model number and that it's not possible to replace the handle on this one due to the shape. She created a tag for FedEx to pick it up and said she'd send a replacement as soon as she got notice that FedEx got my old case. Unfortunately that didn't happen, it didn't ship until a week later and it took another week to get to me. All told, I was without a case for over a month between the shipping and emails. As for the case itself, the construction on the inside seems good and my Jazz Bass fits snugly inside, but the accessory pocket is a bit small. I can't even fit my strap in there. I'd be wary of dealing with this company again.
