I have used Dunlop Tortex .73 exclusively for over 20 years until recently when a guitarist friend let me try out an orange Snarling Dogs BRAIN pick. I liked it so much I ordered tins of the red and black ones to try, along with three other brands of picks I thought looked interesting. After doing some thorough comparison testing of all five picks, I couldn't deny how much more clean and accurate my picking was when using the black BRAIN picks. I am now totally sold on them!

Some people don't like the bumpy grip on these picks, but I do. The raised part is far enough away from the edge of the pick that it doesn't interfere with playing or catch the strings in the way some gripped picks do. The bumps are also not as "sharp" feeling as other gripped picks. The BRAIN picks are comfortable, have good attack, just the right amount of flex and strength, and seem to last well. They are made from Nylon, so they should hold up for quite some time.

My style of playing is typically 90% metal, lots of string skipping, shreddy leads, driving rhythms, sweeps, and squeals (these picks are friggin' awesome for pinch harmonics!). They are also great for acoustic playing.

I have a lot of Dunlops in my gig bag, but I'll be using them as backups from now on. Definitely switching to BRAINs. More brains!!!

I wanted to like these picks, I really did. The grip is excellent and feels more like a gritty material than simple raised bumps. This is the reason why I bought them and it is there where they delivered. But that's it. The actual pick itself is quite floppy, a standard tortex feels rigid compared to these. The big problem is that my dozen picks all have extra plastic material around the sides. I have to trim off around the edges if I want to actually used these. Every pick has a sharp nub on the top while the actual point has material hanging off that catches on the string. I feel like I'm cleaning up poorly cut out Gundam model parts. The tin is the nice though.

I have never come on here and actually trashed something BUT! I bought these picks to try along with some more Dunlop's which I normally use. I have to say most of these picks had an extra 1/32 of an inch or more of unformed plastic all the way around them. I'm not going to sit here and do the finishing trim for Snarling Dogs or I'll become one. They charge a lot of money for unformed picks. Bad form Snarling Dogs. These are useless and the worst excuse for a finished product I have seen in a long time.!

Comments about Snarling Dogs Brain Guitar Picks and Tin Box:

As one reviewer stated, these are not the same picks as previously manufactured. I still have several 1.14mm/orange picks from a few dozen that I purchased a couple years ago and compared those to the 1.14mm picks I recently purchased in November 2015. The difference is quite noticeable...the new picks are more pliable and you can feel them 'give' while you're picking strings. They still don't move around in between your fingers while you're playing, which I like and is why I tried them in the first place, they just aren't as rigid. Consequently, as least for me, it makes playing with them a little sloppy. Well, I still have a few of the old formula picks...after they're done I'll be in search for a new non-slip pick. Too bad...I really liked them.

Well, it's a pick so it's used for strumming and playing, duh. I bought these to try out for their "grip". They definitely have a lot of grip. The sound I get is about the same as with the Dunlop nylons, so I'm good with them. Don't know how they'll last since I haven't used them that much yet. But they really do have grip (texture) if that's what you're looking for. They're definitely worth a try if you're already using nylon.

Comments about Snarling Dogs Brain Guitar Picks and Tin Box:

After playing my favorite Dunlop Tortex for over 10 years, I realized my grip is getting less secure and I kept dropping my picks. Since then, I've tried Star Picks, which are similar in feel to the Tortex but didn't really help, Herdin Blue, which gave me the great "Edge" chime, but were just ok on grip, and Dunlop Jazz Max Grip, which were great, but too small for my fingers. It might take a while to adjust to playing a nylon pick, but I have not dropped one of these things yet. They are very comfortable and the size is standard so I can move them around in my finger if I want. The grip is not just bumps. The markings are angled like barbs on fish hooks. One try and you'll get what I mean. And for those of you who keep a pick for a while, I haven't worn one down and it's been over a month. I got the organge 1.14mm and they're pretty heavy. My only suggestion to the manufacturer is to get the grip a little closer to the tip of the pick because if I'm really pinching it close to the string, I come off the texture, and smooth nylon does not help grip.

Comments about Snarling Dogs Brain Guitar Picks and Tin Box:

What's not to like? If you're dropping picks like crazy (I've got a loose picking style and the plectrums can fly) these are better than most textured picks.
I've got the purple 60s. Nice feel to the picks: nice flex; just right abrasive grit to both sides of pick keep me holding on w/o discomfort. Sharp edges. Handy little sliding tin.
Well made. Sharp edges like Dunlops. I'd equate the 60s to a m-l Dunlop gel with a better tactile feel than a Jim Dunlop Nylon. Flexes like a Fender thin celluloid, but the Fenders have smoother edges, which I like f/certain styles, even if they're slippery buggers.
Very Good value f/nice picks w/a neat tin.

Best picks I've encountered, BUT I hate the name. Snarling has virtually nothing to do with dogs or guitar playing.

Love the tin the picks come in. Still getting used to using a textured pick, but even if that doesn't end up working out, the tin can be used to store other picks.

I find that smooth pics easily slip out of my fingers when I play. These pics give me a much more secure grip. I really liked that they came with a metal tin. I usually use a skoal tin...not into advertising for tobacco...so I was glad to get this tin. It does not stay securely shut. It's ok, but I would prefer if it would securely click closed when you shut it. I keep it in my guitar case, so it works alright for my purposes.

Comments about Snarling Dogs Brain Guitar Picks and Tin Box:

I bought a box of these picks (red .73) about a year and a half ago and they were probably the best picks I'd ever used for tone and ease of manipulation. However, I recently bought another box because unfortunately I gave most of my others away for people to try (wish I'd kept them). This newer box of picks (red .73) are of much lower quality and very much different than those I had just a year ago. They are flimsier, flop more, and have a scratchy yet tinny weak tone. Unfortunately, these newer picks are useless to me. I contacted there support several times over the last couple of weeks to ask where I can find the older stock but have gotten no response. Either they lost their old formula and molds or made some executive decision to cheapen the product in lieu of keeping the pretty tin box. I suppose they're banking on the fact that no one will notice to drop in quality hoping the fancy box will sell the product. I will send the remaining 11 picks in my last order back to musician's friend and tell them to send them back where the got them.

Comments about Snarling Dogs Brain Guitar Picks and Tin Box:

Fantastic grip, thin and light feeling, especially nice for those used to thin or more flexible picks. One "con" would be that the edges of the "point" area on some of the picks is a bit "rough", like a rough seam, but that smooths out with use, or can be smoothed with sharp knife or emery board etc.

These picks seem more flexible for a given thickness (0.88 mm, 1.00 mm etc)than similar-thickness standard picks, so if you like a stiffer pick, go up one size from what you're used to with other picks. Perfect if you like an "in-between" stiffness, or you can go up a size thicker than usual and still not feel too cumbersome. EXCELLENT grip surface that doesn't wear off or decrease effectiveness during use like some specialty picks.

I had always been a huge fan of Dunlop Delrin and Tortex picks, which are great picks but spin around while in your grip, not always leaving your pick in an optimum playing position. I had always liked thin gauge picks. A few years back, I came across these at Musician's Friendand bought some to try. I neverlooked back. I started off with the lightest gauge "green" ones (.053). I worked up to the purples, then reds and now the blacks (.088). I love them. They have a great 'positive' grip, stay well in place in your grip-no matter how light your grip may be. I love the black .088 and think that I finally found "THE" pick for me. You may not think that a pick could have such impact, but I have found that the right pick improves your playing and certainly can have a positive effect on your "sound" or tone. If you look, there's a pick out there for everyone....I found the pick that's best for me. Try these, I think you'll like them.

Have been looking for picks to replace my dwindling stock of Bakersfields. The purple 60's are as close as I have found to the black Bakersfields. The Dog's seem just a bit more flexible. The grip on the Dog's picks is excellent, the best I have found.
