I just want to say this about these tubes. I have two Peavey Triple XXX's, a 112 and a Super 40 EFX, and these are the only tubes that sound right to me with these amps. I've tried the JJ's, based on a review from one forum that claims JJ's sound the best with these amps, but I disagree, the JJ's had way too much top end and sounded like a Chinese tube. I tried a Tung Sol 12AX7 because it is supposed to have a bigger bottom end, which it does, but it also has more treble, not something I would recommend with Triple XXX amps, which have plenty of top end. I'm not saying JJ's or Tung Sol tubes are bad tubes, I'm saying if you have an amp with a lot of treble, too much treble, these Sovtek 12AX7WAs do what they're advertised to and tame the treble by rounding the tone of the amp. For me, this was perfect in my Triple XXXs. Remember, tone is subjective and this is my opinion, yours may vary.

I replaced the original Fender brand 12AX7A tubes in my Fender Super 112 Amp with these Sovtek 12AX7WA tubes. The Fender tubes have a very smooth, clean sound sound but have become microphonic and are ringing. The Sovtek tubes have a very "Cold" sound to them, no bottom end, no tone. Replaced the Sovtek tubes with the Ruby 12AX7ACZ-HG tubes from my Marshall JCM 900 amp and the amp sounds very close to the original Fender tubes. I ordered another set of the Ruby tubes for the Marshall and will leave the Ruby tubes in the Fender amp for now.

Comments about Sovtek 12AX7WA Preamp Tube:

These are direct replacement tubes that come stock in Fender '65 blackface amps. I had tried many replacement tubes (JJ, Tung-Sol, Jan, RCA) and I kept getting irritated that the tone just wasn't doing it for me. Unfortunately I sold the stock groove tubes, and wasn't sure what manufacture that groove tubes purchased their 12ax7's from, and I didn't want to pay their premium prices for relabeled tubes. So, I ended up reading the tube chart on the back of my amp which has "12ax7wa", which are these sovtek tubes, which are 80% gain rating as opposed to the 100% that most 12ax7's use. This is important because the '65 series reissue amps were designed to work with these tubes. All the other preamp tubes I tried sucked so much as they introduced noise, or were muddy, or were too bright, just a complete cluster.

So I don't know how these would function in other amps, but in my '65 DRRI, these are the best tubes for my amp. They're very transparent sounding tubes, not overly bass heavy and allow the amps natural sparkle come through. They're very quite and don't exaggerate the noise floor. It may suffice to say, these work in my amp better than any tube I've found, and I really wish I never changed out my groove tubes, such a complete waste of time. Now that I have the stock tubes back in my amp it's performing better than I ever remembered, I'm a very satisfied customer.

Comments about Sovtek 12AX7WA Preamp Tube:

The tube worked. My preamp uses one tube so everything rides on it. There's no right or wrong: it's what you like. I think this has a generic, weak distorted tone and a clean tone with no presence.

Comments about Sovtek 12AX7WA Preamp Tube:

These are the same as the original tubes in my Fender Deluxe (1999 Hot Rod) amp. I've also used the Tung-Sol 12AX7 which seem to provide a bit more volume and are brighter. I'd recommend the Tung-Sol as well, if you prefer that sound. I changed back to the 12AX7WA tubes since they seemed to provide the amp with it's original tone which I prefered. They've worked well and no issues. I always keep spare tubes on hand (including power tubes) when playing..I've had them quit working. I prefer the 12AX7WA, but of course everyone has a different sound they like.

Replaced a "Ruby" 12ax7 because it sounded thin in my Vox VT20+, the sovtek defintely beefed things up (more bass) then after about 2 weeks, snap, crackle, pop. I will try JJ 12ax7 tube next.

Great replacement for any 12AX7x. I replaced a GT 12AX7R (PI) & it works just fine.

There just aren't that many manufacturers folks; as long as you replace the correct type (pentode, triode, etc.) you're golden.

I bought these tubes to replace some JJ 12ax7s that were in my amp at the time and these work fine, but they have a lot more high end and it was hard to find a happy medium in my tone. I ended up putting the JJs back in and ordering more of those.

Comments about Sovtek 12AX7WA Preamp Tube:

I've heard all kinds of things about Sovtek preamps being OK to poor, but this one definitely works for my Peavey Triple XXX 112. I put this in the V1 position and it's perfect, at least IMHO! Now here's the funny part: I didn't order this tube, I ordered the Electro-Harmonix 12AX7EH and was sent this one instead. At first I was a little annoyed, but then ended up not needing either tube, so I just figured I'd keep it and try it later. I originally changed the old tubes out to JJ AT7/ECC81s in the V1 & V4 positions and JJ AX7/ECC83s in the V2 & V3 positions after exploring the internet for the best options for this amp. The tone was very fizzy/fuzzy without enough bass response. The tone was so bad I was ready to sell the amp. As a last resort I decided to try this tube in the V1 position and it was perfect. The fizziness/fuzziness was tamed and my bass returned. Needless to say, this may not be the perfect tube for your amp, but if you have a Peavey Triple XXX I would recommend you try this tube and forget the JJs, which reminded me of Chinese tubes. I can't really speak for this tubes reliability, though, as I haven't had it long enough, but I have had other Sovteks and they seem as reliable as any other preamp tube.
