The Sovtek EL84 series of power tubes produce an unbeatable smooth, warm, distortion. Excellent replacements in vintage VOX AC-30's and the like, our EL84's are used by Fender, Crate, and Peavey.
These are Sovtek EL84 tubes in platinum matched sets. Their platinum matching process consists of a 24-hour tube burn-in period followed by a bias (plate) current measurement in milliamps.
Soft, medium, and hard style descriptions refer to break up modes of the tube for an overdriven guitar signal. Soft-rated tubes break up easier and earlier, yielding a heavier, harder distortion. Hard-rated tubes however will be cleaner, while medium-rated tubes fall in between.
Order tubes BEFORE they need to be replaced, and save the gig.

I bought two matched sets: A medium quartet and a hard quartet.
I installed the hard quartet set into my Peavey classic 30. Fired it up and played a few minutes and my amp blew a fuse. First time since I owned it. Short story: One of the tubes from the matched set (hard) was bad. Now I am stuck with three tubes that match nothing but each other.
The good news is:
I installed the medium set in my amp (after replacing the fuse). The tubes sound pretty darn good I must say.
Therefore, not sure if it was a fluke (I read another post on here where a guy had the same problem), but, I think I would try them again or even recommend them to others.
The point of redemption for Sovtek was the fact that one of the matched sets is fine (medium) and they sound superb in my classic 30.

The stock sovtek el84's are still going in my blues jr, but the replacements that I ordered came as a matched pair with one dead tube which ruins the other good tube being it has no match now, so will try some more but last time before moving on. Many reputable companies do use the sovtek brand so that has to say something.

These tubes came I my new Kustom 72 coupe and sounded absolutely hot. But a few months later, one of them went out. I don't know if it was because of my amp, or power supply, or what. But they sure went out way too soon.
