I have sperzels on my ESP DV8 and love them, so when I ordered my Les Paul Prophecy I had to order sperzels to go with it. After installing using the screw holes that were already there from the grovers I realized the tuning was backwards. The sperzels have the stabilizing peg towards the top instead of the bottom.
Easy fix I found online to reverse the tuners.
so before you install them be sure to check the winding direction. After I reversed the tuners they worked great like they always had on my ESP DV8.

MY HX: For 45 yrs, Shaller has been the most refined in tunablility, with accurate downtuning, e.g. No slack or play in tuning buttons. This is not the case with these. there is a consistant play,or slack when downtuning before engaging.
This after rechecking and adjusting the tourque of the tuners to the headstock of a new Gibson SG.; AND also played with the obvious features like tighness of lockscrew and screw for the buttons tension, but no decernable differences noted to those setting adjustments. I also resetted the tuners to headstock to be sure- no difference.
another case of bad form,at least on Gibson-the peg on the back of the headstock needs to be drilled .002 mm from the position of the stock tuner setting holes in the back of the headstock, so even if old holes are filled,it is likely the new drilling will slip/retrack to the old holes. If the peg or a setscrew needed to done; one at an offset angle would have been a non-issue. I am going with Grover locking at 18 to one ratio.
GOOD: they do lock and maintain tuning with less than 1/2 turn of the peg; and they keep in tune.
Not able to accurately tune down a semi tone.

Will buy more. That says it all!
I now have 2 sets of these and they are all they claim to be.They hold a tune very well. and make string change a lot faster. The fact that you have to drill a hole in your guitar for the set pin is not so great, but if you have half a brain you can do i with out alot of effort. Just be very careful to get the allignment of the pin hole precise, or you will end up with wonkus tunners.

I Have Sperzel on several guitars i cant say any other thing but great things about this tunning machines i really hate lock nuts dont like how they look dont like to open them with allen wrench and close them even when i love floating trems, this sperzel really change all that is just as simple to insert your string lock them tune it and thats it it will keep your guitar in tune despite wheather changing conditions, transportation etc.

when you re playing recording or practicing it will keep your guitar in tune even if you pull your trem all the way down.

even for guitars that doesn't have tremolos it will keep your tune stable and always have peace of mind about it.

Note: they don´t use standar holes so you will have to drill to put this in most guitars.

Comments about Sperzel 3+3 Trim-Lok Tuning Machines:

I recently purchased this item replace the stock grover tuners on my ESP LTD EC-401. I did not like the way the grover tuners kept my guitar in tune, or out of tune as the case may be. I have had locking tuners before and knew that it would be an improvement and it was, after the install the guitar just stays in tune and is easier more linear when tuning, not having the tuner bounce around all over the place. I did the install myself, was pretty easy, I didn't like the template that came on the side of the box and with the 3+3 the tuners aren't lined up to begin with so I just eyeballed the alignment and the install came out perfect. The EC-401 already has the right size tuner holes so there is no need to drill or ream the holes, you just need to drill a tiny pilot hole for the alignment dowl which is easy. I heard someone removed the dowls which meant no drilling but I didnt want to deal with the hassles of the tuners spinning so I did it the right way, don't let the drilling deture you from buying these, it's probably one of the best upgrades you can make to a guitar.

These tuners feel well made and do their job well enough, but theres a bit of play in them while tuning. Not that easy to be precise with them. Had a guitar with epic tuning issues. Plastic nut that would bind a lot and damaged tuners. Replaced the tuners with these first. No help. It was all in the nut. So I bought a graphtech tusq xl nut. No more binding and better sound. Still not able to tune accurately; although it does stay in tune well enough once its there. Good tuners are a big deal on a guitar without a locking nut. I recommend looking for something with better tuning feel.

I had these on a custom shop strat I bought in the early 90's. they worked very well. so when I bought a les Paul with tuning issues, this was my first fix. The quality feel with these doesn't seem to be up to par. they are working, but a few seem to feel a little (graveley) when turning them. they helped with the tuning , but I feel that these may not last. do reaserch before buying..maybe they have a better quality ones on the sperzel site?

due to all the rave reviews on these tuners I decided to buy them, I must have gotten a bad batch I hope because I couldn't believe what all went wrong. for starters and this one is me complaining but why is the brushed chrome more expensive than gold or black, normally its the opposite. I bought these for my ibanez because after 4 years the stock tuners were wearing out. the first problem was that one of the washers was missing out of the package. the second, none of the nut threads would line up with the post threads. if i wanted to get them on they would cross thread and lastly, on one of the tuners the lock wouldnt come down so that I could get a string through it. I took it back the same day and decided to just be patient and order the black chrome. I really hope the product I got was just a bad one out of the crop because I would think a product this expensive would be better quality. I will have to wait and see when I get the new ones

Let me start by saying, I love Sperzel tuners! I've been a semi-pro musician for over 30 years. I've tried Grover (my second choice in tuners by the way), Schaller, Planet Waves, etc., and none of them are as solid and reliable as the Sperzels. I have a set on a 1990 G&L S-500, that have been in constant use since I got the thing. They have never failed to function properly and never needed any repair or replacement. Don't be fooled by complaints about the 12:1 ratio, just be patient and you will get used to it. Trust me, I can change a broken string with these in less than one minute! Great when you're in the middle of a set, or song for that matter! When I decided to make my SG Standard a real useable working man's axe, The Klusons were the first thing to hit the spare parts bin, to be replaced with a set of Sperzels (followed closely by the bridge & tailpiece switched for TonePros) . My SG (a very sentimental gift from my father), joined the ranks of my G&L and other gigging guitars. Solid as a rock and every part working and useable.
How many features can a tuning machine have?
As opposed to the fit and finish of the other brands, these things have always been flawless. They are a bit tricky, and feel a bit rough at first, but they break in quickly and the action gets very smooth after just a bit. The feel of the satin chrome finish is nice as well, and gives you a good positive grip on the knobs. Grover, and others, tend to feel slick and my old fingers slip on them a bit. The locking knobs are knurled, but narrow, which would be my only complaint. This still is no problem because there is plenty of grip there to get the job done!
Something this reliable is worth every dime!

Installed the tuners myself on my EPI LP. Rock solid tuners! You must be careful with the drilling. One of the tuners didn't have a "lock pin". Called Sperzel and the next day the PRESIDENT of the company (Joe Sperzel) called me, apologized and offered to send a replacement. In these days of "screw the customer" corporate mentality, this is one CLASS COMPANY!!! They've won me over as a customer for life. If you want a great tuning mechanism, they are the absolute best!

These tuners keep my ESP Viper in tune really well. They make it really easy to change strings too-just get the string through and lock it in and all thats left is tuning. The only downside to these tuners is that the largest string size you can squeeze through them is a .048, wich still feels small to me. If the hole was big enough to fit a .056 Then they would be pretty much perfect.

I had these tuners installed on my Ibanez Iceman 300 and they work great. I got them in chrome. There's no need for multiple wraps and you can change strings in a snap. These tuners would be great if you play live and break a string and the strings do not need much time to settle and stay in tune. I have an ESP LTD MH-1000 (Black) coming soon and it has Sperzel tuners, also.

I've had Sperzels on my Carvin DC200 with Wilkinson Tremelo since I got it 14 years ago. I love them. They are easy to use, stay in tune, and, you don't have to hassel with the lockdowns Most bridges use... I even changed out my Ibanez / Floyd Rose with Sperzels and they work great with that combination as well. I highly recommend them. I gave them a 9 for quality cuz one of the machine heads lost the lock down post that keeps the string in place, locked down.

I had the choice of many brands. Because I was spending about 160 hours on my first acoustic, I wanted to put the best quality I could into the parts. I made the right choice with Sperzel. They are realiable, smooth, they never slip, and the look is something I'm proud to have on my hand-made baby.
