I have Sperzel's on all five of my electric guitars. I am in a touring band with a national album, and have a few other side projects as well. I change my strings for every show so my Sperzels get plenty of use. Also I used to apprentice for a well known San Diego repair shop who's clients included Jewel, Stone Temple Pilots, and any big name musician rolling into town. I learned how to correctly wind a string on regular tuners, so you need not take a grain of salt with my review. Locking tuners are great for quick replacement. I recently replaced a set of strings on a guitar with regular Grover tuners on it and my carpal tunnel flared up after 30min of working on them. Speed Winders are a must for non locking tuners! Locking tuners are just 1) insert string into peg hole 2) pull string tight 3) crimp the string 90 degrees towards the inside of the headstock 4) lock the tuner 5) cut off excess & tune up to pitch. This usually takes about a minute per string if that. If you have more than one wrap around the tuner you are using the tuners incorrectly. The pros about these tuners-My first set were a gold plated (shiney not matte) set on a strat copy, and I let a friend borrow it who left it in the room with his indoor pool. My tremolo ended up pitting massively and so did the Sperzels, but once I cleaned them up they were in better shape than the after market gold tremolo. Additionaly, most people don't know you can dissasemble the tuner and switch a 6 inline set into a 3x3 set, or lefty set for that matter. The tuner's build is ambiguous to direction, so if one day you have them on a strat and then need them for a Les Paul, you don't necessarily have to buy a new set (maybe just new buttons). Lastly, the pin design is great--no additional offset screw holes for the headstock. Offered in Chrome, matte silver, black, gold, and matte gold. If you are really into colors, they offer blue purple, red, green, etc.The cons about these tuners-there is a plastic washer between the button and tuner and I have found that sometimes these get worn down unevenly and they can slip when tuning up. Perhaps a metal washer could change this. One other review mentioned the pin being stuck in the headstock after removing it. I had this happen once, but I remedied it with a pair of pliers. But I agree this is poor design, but if you pre-drill a hole this should not be a problem. The thumbscrew is slightly difficult to turn as the edge is somewhat sharp compared to the Schaller.I recomend these tuners to people who play often (the stay at home person might as well leave their stuff stock) who's guitars are equipped with stoptail/hardtail, or non locking tremolo (especially Bigsbys). I've never used these on my acoustic and I wouldn't see any point using it with double-locking tremolos with a locking nut.

These really do work well. I have two sets on two guitars installed from the factory. The only problem is that the chrome came from the factory with it flaking off the nuts and the finish is crude. If they could learn how to chrome these, they would be 10 stars. I have several guitars from the '70's to the present and none have ever had the chrome peel yet.

Comments about Sperzel 6 In-Line Locking Tuners:

I had these factory-installed on my Custom Shop Carvin (non-staggered, 2+4 headstock), and love them. I never used to snip my string ends...now I squeeze the lock, two wraps, and I'm strung up. *Snip* These are so good I put them on two guitars I just put together, an f-hole Tele hybrid and a black korina/bubinga Strat. The Tele, sad to say, needs string trees after all. The 'shorter-as-they-get-farther-away' tuner shafts just don't quite provide enough angle at the nut to not need them. My 'B' string sounds a little dead open. It's a beautiful walnut neck/stock (and I was happy to think I wouldn't have to put trees on it), but that's the way it is....as lock-tuners, though, they're still the best for my money whether you still need trees or not.

Comments about Sperzel 6 In-Line Locking Tuners:

I have used Sperzel locking tuners on all of my guitars for years. It is usually one of the first things I do when buying a new guitar.
The thing about locking tuners is that they don't necessarily help your guitar stay in tune better. They more or less make changing strings a lot faster and easier. Having a good nut and adding graphite to the nut slots is what helps keep a guitar in tune best IMO. As far as improving sound, I am not sure about that either.
Bottom line is they make changing out strings fast and easy and they look better than most stock tuners. Buy these if you want to change strings in about 2 minutes time versus 10-15 minutes.

I got a set and over-torqued 2 of them during install. This broke the cast thread. Had to order a whole new set as they dont do individuals.

THE PINS GET STUCK. THEN YOU CAN'T GET THE STRING OUT. USELESS!!! I hope the "custom size holes" that were drilled into my strat can take regular tuners cause I'm switching to Schaller.

            My favorite tuners

            By Jonathan Dilworth

            from WA, CA, AL

Comments about Sperzel 6 In-Line Locking Tuners:

Was looking for locking tuners to use for my guitar builds. I tested Gotoh, Grover, Schaller, Planet Waves, Steinberger, and Sperzel. I wanted a more modern look so Waverly was out. Sperzel is what I ended up going with. Steinberger provided the most sustain and have an excellent gear ratio but are very heavy and I had several break under normal use. Others perform well but I had problems with pitting over time. All my Sperzels still look and perform like new and they have a wide range of color options. They will improve sustain if you are replacing most stock tuners without being to heavy on your headstock or your wallet. You can disassemble and reconfigure them or replace parts (although I've never had to). They are now on all my electric and steel string acoustics.

Comments about Sperzel 6 In-Line Locking Tuners:

put these on a Fender Tele. Love them..easy to use & stay in tune to boot. They really improved the tone of this guitar.I don't know much about how sound or tones work & what affects them, but this really helped..a caveat..if you are not good with hand tools, have someone do the install for you. Most likely need to drill a small hole for the locator pin & need a good fitting wrench for the nuts.highly reccomended.

            Necessary for Live Players

            By 668800

            from Canada

Comments about Sperzel 6 In-Line Locking Tuners:

I just bought these from Musician's Friend two weeks ago, and it took 7 business days to ship to where I live (just outside of Toronto, Canada). This particular model of Sperzel's is intended for FLAT headstocks that use string-trees (hence the graduated post height) i.e. Strats and Teles and anything else that DOES NOT have an angled headstock. They require minimal drilling (there should already be holes beneath the stock tuning pegs - just unscrew the washer and nut to check when you're changing strings to see if there are already stability holes drilled in). As for performance: phenomenal. It seems a little hyperbolic that many players claim you only tune once per change of strings; but they're just that good. Obviously you'll fine tune, but for the live player, these keep your intonation SPOT ON for any show - from a 2-hour metal trek to a 30-minute light jam. And I make use of my Strat's trem: these pegs bring it right back with little deviation no problem! A definite buy.

            Dependable, dependable, dependable

            By Scooterflash

            from Florida

Comments about Sperzel 6 In-Line Locking Tuners:

I/ve put Sperzels on all 9 of my electric guitars simply because of the quality of build and pure physics. All these locking tuners do is put pressure on the wound string so it won't slip. This allows you to tune your guitar even with new strings and not have to worry about string slippage and going out of tune. After "locking" the tuner to the string, you just tune as normal, turning your tuner knobs. As with any new set of strings, you must stretch the strings from side to side a couple of times, but this stretching is not from the tuners, but rather from the ball end of the string shifting at the bridge. Once you've done that the guitar will stay in tune no matter how many times you bens strings. That's been my experience and it has been very consistant.

            The pins get stuck!

Comments about Sperzel 6 In-Line Locking Tuners:

Get something else! Ive been playing with Schallers, Grovers and other locking tuners very prestinely and lightly for years- THESE ARE PRONE TO GETTING STUCK CLOSED and then they are pointless after that!!In a live setting, I would rather re-string it it the old fashioned way for five minutes then have to come back to this website and by new tuners- period. Get Grovers instead!!!

Comments about Sperzel 6 In-Line Locking Tuners:

My main guitar features these awesome inventions. After using these I have no idea why anyone would want to screw around with regular tuning heads. The tuning stability is the best I've experienced. And the overall simplicity and speed of string changes is second to none. Buy these.
