I'm on my third one of these. It's a very simple little tool that makes changing strings a breeze. However, it's made of plastic that just won't stand up to a lot of usage in a drill. Drill bits are made of metal and so should this be. I'd happily pay three times as much for a steel or aluminum version.
The Spin Doctor String Winder works great on guitars, however will not work on mandolins. Mandolin is my main instrument so I purchased this in hopes that it would work on mandolins as promised in their add. The head is too wide to fit in between the tuning knobs. Big appointment.
I bought the one for the bass when I had to put strings on my upright bass. What normally takes about an hour, and causes your wrist to feel like it's on fire, took only a couple of minutes, mind you though, I was using a high-speed cordless drill. I don't want to ever string up an upright bass without one again.
When I first tried the Spin Doctor I thought it was way too wide to work on my mandolin. I even wrote a review stating that it wouldn't work. I was wrong. It works well, you just have to make sure your pegs are turned to provide the most clearance as there is just enough room.
I highly reccomend to only take strings off with this unless you have a really slow, weak, high slippage drill.
I got this thing free with some strings that I bought and I am glad I got it. I did my bass and my guitar in the time it usually took me to do just my bass. I am soo glad I got this.
This tool Rocks, Strings come on and off in minutes. Using a cordless screwdriver is the way to go. Great Job!!
